Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

I just found out my town is getting a Five Guys.

Their cheeseburgers are about 95% pure cholesterol, and will be good as long as it's a well-managed shop. The fries, unfortunately, suck and I can't figure out why everyone raves about them. Always soggy, to the point that I don't even order them anymore when I go.

The plan is to check it out once it opens.

The town in which I was raised is now building a Chick-fil-A. It's funny to think about all the people excited for it, and when I talk to my coworkers in Charlotte, NC about it they just laugh. People out there like the place, but it's nothing special to them - it's just a chicken sandwich shop. Out here, people are salivating for them. Apparently it's true, new is always better.

Time to in line for a sandwich? :D

The first time I went there, I thought the same about the fries, But the one that recently opened close to work is different, the fries are OK, not great but ok. They manage to get the fries a bit crispy on the corners, which improves them greatly.

Interesting. Just the opposite here where Five Guys was founded (actually in suburban VA). I find Chick-fil-A much more exciting than Five Guys, except for the fact that they are not open on Sundays.

Unless the place is close to empty while I'm driving by, I won't go anywhere near it for a few months. In Apple Valley, a new restaurant opens up and it's packed - with the lines out of the parking lot - for at least the first month. After that, that's when you know whether or not the place is worth it.

The KFC there was torn down a few years ago - maybe ten years ago now - and it reopened with an A&W sharing the premises. You could barely drive anywhere near it with the people waiting to get into the drive-through. No thanks. It wasn't until a good six months had passed that I even tried going there. The A&W menu was so-so.

Whenever I visited my extended family in Rochester, I'd pass by that A&W on the way there (494-77-42-52 route). And I'd ALWAYS stop for a double-bacon cheeseburger/root beer float. ALWAYS.

Is anyone else excited for hockey season?

YES! I will catch 2 games when the Sioux play Simon Fraser and U of BC in exhibition games in January in Vancouver. I will make a trip to Grand Forks some time during the season and catch a couple games.

A&W - nummy! There was one in Grand Forks that was great. Mushroom burger, onion rings and root beer. Ummmm.

There is one in Pine City MN (IIRC) that still has a drive-thru, classic style, option. So awesome.

Cool. Good luck.

Is anyone else excited for hockey season? Exhibition game this weekend, and first real game next Thursday. I'm also excited because I figured out how to make my UNH hockey trip into a work trip so I can save a little money and not burn a vacation day (I'll spend Friday afternoon visiting a supplier, then off to hockey).

I am. And I'm looking forward to going back to the Yoop later this month for the NMU vs. Tech series. I'm also looking forward to a trip to Ferris State in February and the new WCHA playoffs in Grand Rapids in March.

Thanks. I'm excited about it!

I'm also very excited for the hockey season. Exhibition here Sunday and then a gigantic trip out East. Should be fun.

Five guys is good, but there is just soooo much grease.

We used to have an A&W in our mall. My uncle would take me there often. Mini corndogs and rootbeer floats. The absolute best.

We have a chick fil a in our student union. I've eaten the fries a couple times, never a sandwich, though.

I'm not a big fast good guy, but I'd gladly welcome a Popeyes. A few summers ago I spent a week in New Orleans and I ate there every day. It was delicious. Everything tasted home made, and the biscuits were to die for.

And Chik-fil-A is better... the nuggets are a god send.

I remember going to A&W drive up where they put the tray on your window. I don't remember what we got for food but my brother and I got to split a chocolate shake and that was a big deal!

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

mookie, are you going to the exhibition on Saturday? I still have the poster from the banquet to give you.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

Good Morning, Lodge!

IIRC, the A&W by my parent's house is still open. The old style drive up. I guess I have something to check out when I am back down there for Thanksgiving.
