Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

Truth. Running sucks something fierce.

In Houston. Too hot. Too humid.
My parents were trying to convince me that the weather is nice in Houston now. They said, "it's cooled down quite a bit"

My brother sent me a posting for a 'beer engineer' in Houston. I love my family, and that they want me to be closer, but they need to move somewhere that isn't absurdly hot most of the year. Oh, and somewhere that has hockey.

Houston Aeros still exist?

Houston Aeros, the AHL affiliate of the Wild, but unlike the Wild, the Aeros have had success in their league.

Building a small table from scratch right now. I need to figure out how to solve for some angles being slightly off from 90 degrees. The wood was cut to the right lengths, but some of the glueing moved a fraction of an inch so the table's legs no longer sit at exactly 90 degrees.

Aeros do not exist. They were moved and renamed to be the Iowa Wild in 2013. Located in Des Moines.

I did go to an Aeros game several years ago when I had a project in the Huston suburbs. I was impressed (negatively) with the completely programmed fighting that went on. The two designated goons squared off just as the puck was dropped. No real cause for it, other than that the fans demanded it, so far as I could see.

I've never heard a nice thing about Houston. Sounds like a city to avoid.

It's consistently rated among the country's worst cities for urban sprawl and traffic, and the crime is pretty bad (though not quite Detroit or Chicago bad). Basically a textbook example of a poorly planned boomtown.

Just can't get my mind off of the beating Iowa put on Minnesota Saturday.;)

Which confirms that there must not be much going on in your life to fixate on such a minor occurrence as beating the Gophers in football - especially when they start some kid from Mankato West at QB. :p

Things are a hair slower this week, although I do have a philosophy paper on top of my normal busy weekly life.

Just write down that you've taken to solipsistic view on life, and since you won't be there to watch the grading of the paper it won't really happen. Since it won't really happen, you don't really need to write the paper.

So Junior is out with the car by himself for the first time tonight. Church youth group.

Do you feel old?;)

I'll never forget the day I got my license. My dad brought me to the DMV, I passed, and we met back at home before I went to school. We both left home the same time, and the road splits to a Y as I exit and he continues towards work. I waved to him, and I'm fairly certain I saw a tear in his eye.. I was the oldest.. Will be an interesting day as a parent, I'm sure.

The first part you mentioned is what I've heard about it too. And it's not like other US cities with stuff people actually want to see.

Yo, Lodge.

Spent the day in Rochester (MN) for my grandpa's funeral ceremony of sorts (didn't bury the urn, waiting for my uncle* and aunt to get back from Washington DC). Not a lot of tears in the crowd, as it ended up being more of a celebration of his life, rather than mourning of his death. Some old neighborhood family friends showed up unexpectedly (families that knew him, and we have known pretty much my whole life), and I think that helped my mom deal with today. She only broke down once, and just for a few seconds, and then (in true family fashion), "manned up" to stay strong for others.

*Found that uncle isn't at some security thing, I guess there's some Police K9 Unit competition, and my uncle is apparently a national judge; he helped start the K9 unit in Rochester many years ago. They couldn't get a substitute for him on such short notice, and apparently this thing is a huge deal.
