Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #162: Love Is In the Air

Crisis over: pending drug screen and background check, I will be employed by Wal-Mart. Not exactly my life's dream, but Wal-Mart is better than the nothing I'm doing now. And I'm not going to complain.

Any advice for adjusting to third shift?
There are some good web sites for shifting your sleep patterns. Coffee is BAD!! It messes up the sleep wake cycle. When you get out of work- wrap around sunglasses to block light because light stimulates your brain to stay awake. A lot of the ER docs will get very dk sunglasses and put them on before they leave the hosp and not take them off until they are in their bedroom with the shades down and lights off. They swear by it.

HHT!!!

Any advice for adjusting to third shift?

Some people treat the third shift like a regular day. Wake up, get ready, go to work, and then the morning is their "evening." When I worked third shift, I usually woke up in the afternoon, did whatever, worked, and then went to bed right when I got home. It's a matter of what will work best for you. Also, I'd make sure NO light gets into your bedroom if you're anything like me. I needed it completely dark during the day to get quality sleep.

What Brent said. I worked 3rd shift for a year. I did the exact same thing. Get up around 3ish in the afternoon and do what I needed to do. Then at 11pm go to work. Black will become your favorite color.

My real advise is to become quite familiar with highly caffeinated coffee for the first few weeks. Stop the caffeine around 3-4am so you can go to sleep at a decent hour. Once you adapt, you can ween yourself off the highly caffeinated coffee and go to what was normal during the daytime.

I'm not only at the HHT, I'm at the Happy Life Table. After doing nothing for nearly a year, I'll be doing something with my day, other than running and cooking. I didn't even have to use my AK... I gotta say it was a good day!
