Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #162: Love Is In the Air

I'm trying to figure out why ralph decided to spread some negative rep my way this afternoon.
I apologize. I was having trouble getting the Rep to register, and I must have hit the wrong button. . Did either Walrus or Omaha get Negrep also? :o

Could someone refill Almington as I am not able to do that now.

Edit: Walrus and Omaha seem to be OK.

Are you still majoring in engineering? What about (sooner or later) finding a teaching gig that incorporates that? I know that there are atleast some colleges where the professors simply had real life experience and their B.E.

I consider myself lucky. I love driving the boats, and I'm fortunately extremely well off, especially at 24. Do I have a lot of materialistic things? Sure. But I know I don't truly need them, however I like being able to enjoy my 2 weeks off at a time. Also, I don't buy the latest shiniest things, and I'm fiscally responsible about it. I probably have my parents/upbringing to thank for that (Mom was a middle school teacher, Dad is a (soon to be retired) Corrections Officer). We lived comfortably, but certainly not super wealthy.

There is nothing wrong with wanting nice things in life... just make sure you're keeping all the rest in check. Its waaaay to early abandon a path unless you are dead sure that it is what you want to do. A math teacher of mine in HS had a engineering degree from WPI (Worcester Poly Tech... think in between Clarkson and RPI in reputation)... just had to go back for the teaching masters... I think.

edit: I don't think its a shame to want some nice gadgets and a nice car (ok, that's what I want... stupid expensive DC). There is nothing wrong making a comfortable living and I'm sure you'll find the outlets you want.

Oh, and to add to the water woes- now the toilet tank is leaking from the bottom, where the pipe comes into it. Whee. What is the name of that evil water spirit??

Interesting. Good Luck to the boy!

Thank you.

I'm continuously told by people, many from the hockey community, that I need to seriously consider teaching, or a few flat out say, just wait, you'll be a teacher. My girl friend is an elementary ed major. I have no idea what I want to do. I may meet with a past teacher of mine who now runs the education program here and see what kind of opportunities and experiences he's had along his journey. While I'm not taking any engineering courses this semester, I am taking two business courses, and I'm still a tad bit unsure of what I'd do with a finance degree, etc.

This is probably going to sound terrible, but I love to do things, I have somewhat expensive tastes, etc. Teaching salary isn't great. The thing that scares me with teaching is not letting my kids, especially if I marry my girlfriend, have the kinds of opportunities that I've had growing up. Two teachers for parents aren't exactly going to be rolling in the dough. I know for a fact that what I end up doing, it will be something I work very hard at, as well as enjoy. I just am very confused right now and don't know what to think, really. Sorry to annoy, but I just needed to get that out.
I was gonna say find yourself a sugar momma. But everyone else's advice is probably better.
My mom taught elementary school when I was younger. It was nice because if I ever had a day off school, so did she. As a young kid that was great (didn't care when I was older).
And sure the expensive toys are nice, but they aren't necessary.

Look out! Ralph is on a neg rep spree!

This. Mrs. g has met with a few of her past students over the years to discuss being a teacher. She is quite frank with them.

Good morning Lodge.

Regarding money and material things.......in my previous life I made big bucks. I worked my azz off and played hard. I found the more I made the more I spent. My priorities were self serving as I was single and did anything I wanted. It was fun but it had its limits.

Getting out of the rat race and getting married was a huge decision for me as I could not have both. Looking back I made the right decision. I have a wonderful wife, two awesome kids and a roof over my head. Regarding material things, we have what we need and we try to keep things under control for the kids. Granted, my wife and I make a decent living but there is more to life than money and material things.

Growing up I remember the memories more than the stuff and that is what I am trying to do with my kids.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #162: Love Is In the Air

Back in September of 2009 I started playing competition hockey again with a team called the Rubes, after playing about 3 years and 9 months of pick up hockey prior to that (played as a kid, too, but there was a 14 year gap). In my second game as a Rube I got checked in my non-checking league, so I wasn't prepared for it. I ended up crashing into the boards, hitting my shoulder. Well, I went to get it looked as shortly after it happened, and after looking at some x-ray pics the doctor told me to just stop weightlifting and hockey for a while and it should all heal up just fine.

That advice didn't seem to register with my should and thus yesterday I went in to get it checked out again by a different doctor as the last one seemed disinterested with my issue. I've not been weightlifting because I haven't been able to, and lately my shoulder's been hurting more than it had in the past few months. The x-rays this time showed that my shoulder has been wearing in a bad pattern, the ball portion of the ball-and-socket joint wearing away to flat on one portion. I'm going in for an MRI with dye to see what that shows. This is all that good and bad thing, in that it's good to finally get to the bottom of this thing and bad in that I have that sinking feeling that I'm looking at surgery in the next few months here.

Then, to top it off, while playing hockey on Saturday I had to leave the game early because something felt off in my left knee. Even off the ice it's causing me pain now when I do certain movements and I'm afraid I've done something to my MCL, based upon where it hurts. So there goes my ice time and leg routines for a while. I could have had a better 3-day weekend.

In my experience the satisfaction you get in your career far outweights any monetary gains. Plus I think you'll be pleasantly surprised how you'll be fine on a teachers salary.

Haven't you been teaching for like 6 months?

My wife has been teaching just over 20 years and she has a masters degree. Her salary is decent but not where it should be for a) what she does and the hours she puts in and b) how long she has been in her position.

She has averaged a half percent raise over the past six or seven years. Plus, she spends her own money for basic things she uses in her room.

Don't go into teaching for the money.
