Does your hospital have a test consultant from the lab that works with the doctors to minimize unnecessary lab tests?
No and if it is another one of those things that we have to deal with that tells me they know what I want when they haven't seen the patient because the insurance will like it better if I do X I am glad. We have way too many checks and balances that impede timely care because they think we need a pencil pusher to clear our logic while the patient languishes. I suppose someone who actually has a degree would be a nice change from Sally who wants to know what negative outcome will be when we have just said the person has a life threatening dx but...... Maybe it would be better to ask me not on a day I have worked.
I don't believe the point of this is to create more bureaucracy. Doctors are far too ignorant when it comes to the purpose of the various lab tests at their disposal, and it leads to a lot of unnecessary orders. The idea behind the creation of this degree and the position it would fill in healthcare is not so much to throw an obstacle in the way of the providers but to give them a knowledgeable resource to take away a lot of the guesswork.
