Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 137: Counting the long summer days

So, we're in the process of hiring at the store. We don't use applications and go strictly by resumes. All I have to say is, "Wow." The grammar, spelling, and general language butchery in some of these is downright painful. I've even had one girl tell me she's really interested in the "positron". Positron? Really?

Two atoms are talking and one says "I think I lost an electron."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, I'm positive."

Is that some sort of treadmill?? ;)

I mean no offense, diva, but you require resumes and interviews for a retail job like that? I could understand manager type positions but I didn't think you'd need to go through that for an entry level retail job. The only job I had other than jobs that fall under my major was at the golf course and that went like this:

Me: hi, I'm bbdl, I'm looking for a job
Superintendent: ok, great. Can you wake up early, we start at 5am.
Me: yes
Superintendent: when can you start and what is your phone number?

I can understand why we do interviews--our sales positions are very conversation based, so it's a good chance to see how they interact with 2 complete strangers under some degree of pressure. The resumes-only thing confused me, too, but this is making it somewhat easier to weed out poor candidates.

Resumes aren't necessarily a bad idea in this case. I'm assuming that your boss is essentially looking for 18+ year olds who can speak and act intelligently enough to make a sale, and in this economy you're going to get a lot of yayhoos walking through the door. If they can't be bothered to produce an employment history and/or a few references, you can weed them out right away without scheduling an interview.

Just came l l close to seeing a 20-30 barge tow lose their steering and crash. Thing is probably pushing/over 1000 feet long. It got my adrenaline pumping, I can't imagine how the guy steering that boat was feeling. He saved it though, excellent job by him, wow.
