Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #131: Spring is here!

Happy Hockey table.

Does anyone know if a team has ever been idle for as long as RPI will be before an NCAA toruney game?

No kidding!

I know in 2004 BU -- having just squeaked into the conference playoffs as seed #8 -- knocked off #1 BC in the quarterfinals. BC made the tourney (and the Frozen Four) that year; so they had at least 2 weeks off. But RPI this year? It's like you packed the winter stuff away for the summer; now you have to unpack it all over again!

Good morning.
Rainy & 40 here in beautiful Capital City, MN. Glad it was warm enough the past week to melt the last round of snow off my roof or it could have been ugly. :)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #131: Spring is here!

Good morning Lodge.

Had an awesome day Friday (even though BSU lost).

Mrs. g and I have been looking into getting a bike for little g. It has been impossible for him to pedal anything conventional like a tricycle or a Big Wheel or a bike with training wheels or anything else that has pedals. The g family spent Friday afternoon with a bikeologist for little g.

The bikeologist had about 5 different bikes for little g to try (the bikes are designed especially for people with disabilities). Little g climbed onto one of the bikes and as soon as we got little g's feet secured in the pedals he zoomed away! He was going fast and zig zagging around obstacles. It blew me an everyone else away because it was like he had been riding a bike for a long time.

When he first took off on the bike he had a smile that was bigger than life itself. The expression on his face was one of total accomplishment. There was not a dry eye in the place.

Little g spent the next 2 hours trying different bikes. At one point he came up to me and gave me a big hug and said "dad, I knew I could ride a bike." Awesome. Simply awesome.

Wow, that is great about lil g!

Scarlet, your hotel is about a mile from my house (by roads, shorter as crow flies - but we're not crows). Nice, but quiet location. The Galleria that is attached has nice, upscale shops and a couple good restaurants. There's also a McCormick and Shmeck's on the ground floor of your building - not Boston seafood, but pretty good seafood for flyover land (it's a Seattle based upscale chain).

Peewee team party last night - a good time was had by all. May go to the State Peewee A title game this afternoon to see the kid's buddies play again. The brother of one of the kid's teammates is in a State final in Bantam B1 (I think) today.

ETA: Just looked at the stat line for the kid's peewee team, 28-7-2, 178 GF, 75 GA, Kid was 16-18-34, 6 PIM for third in total pints, first in assists, 5th in goals.

Ok, got the new couch and chairs moved in without damaging the leather. Can't say the same for the ceiling or walls... Oops.

not knowing the full extent of these things (and not knowing your sons full extent of things)... how much improvement do (or the drs) think he can get out of physical activities? I don't usually say these types of things but it'll be interesting to see him come along... for all that's gone wrong it sounds like he'll have a real strong measure of tenacity when he gets older.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #131: Spring is here!

Sometimes teams don't know much about each other. Denver plays Western Michigan in the first round of the NCAA tourney next weekend. According to my Denver media guide the teams have faced each other only four times with the last series having been played in the 1982-1983 season. Denver won those games, played in the old DU Arena, 5-1 and 10-4. The all-time series stands 2-2-0. That's certainly a small sampling of data which shows the teams have next to no history of playing each other.

Just a guess on my part, but since hockey coaches are part "gypsy" and have friends and former associates coaching throughout the small world of college hockey, there'll be calls made to and from coaches seeking information about upcoming opponents. For instance, while Denver hasn't played WMU in--as best I can tell--nearly thirty years, Enrico Blasi of Miami plays WMU each year. Blasi was recruited by, and then played for, George Gwozdecky at Miami. Subsequent to that Blasi was part of Gwozdecky's coaching staff at Miami and Denver before taking the job at Miami. I'm envisioning a call between Gwozdecky and Blasi today or tomorrow.

In a similar vein, RPI doesn't play North Dakota often. RPI's Seth Appert coached under Gwozdecky for a long time at Denver before heading to RPI. Denver plays NoDak each year, so I think there'll be information sought and exchanged between Appert and Gwozdecky.

Personally, I don't know beans about this year's WMU team, but I learned last year that any team is more than capable of beating any other team in the NCAA event [RIT over Denver for example]. I'm looking forward to all the first rounds games next weekend. Good luck to all the teams playing in this year's tournament.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend folks. Spring is almost here!:)

They beat Michigan by three goals in the CCHA semifinal. It'd be foolish to underestimate them (not that Denver would do that given their recent first round performances).

We could easily see some sloppy hockey out of UND and DU next weekend, though - UND and MN were guilty of that in '07 in their first round games following a similarly epic battle at the F5 to what we saw this year.
