Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 122: Autumn has arrived.

Lil' is going on a mission trip to Traverse So. Dakota next summer. Anyone been to that area? They are also planning to go to some big Lutheran church in St Paul- to stay the night. Anoney around that area? The leaders were trying to go to Mt Rushmore but found out htat it would be too far. I think they are going to the mall of america instead. They are still in planning stages so I thought I would ask.

Two bigger ones I can think of are along Snelling Ave in St. Paul, one is across from Macalester & the other one is further south on the corner of Highland Parkway. Can't remember the names though. IIRC there are not too many really large Lutheran churches in St. Paul, most seem to be smaller neighborhood type congregations. Most of the larger congregations are suburban.

Hey, it's all Rome on the correct side of the river, buster. Keep your schism-ated Protestant questions over there in Minne-a-No-Place. :p
Martin who? I think the first one above is in the Holy Spirit boundary area and the other resides in Lumin Christi / Highland Catholic area. :D

Pfft, noobs. The Catholic church we attend in Edina is older than your Basilica. :p

Ahhh, the Basilica, proof of Minneapolitan whining. We want a Cathedral, too!!
Do you go to Our Lady Of Lexus?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 122: Autumn has arrived.

Are you going to get a 3D TV too? :D

I've been happy with my Vizio. Had it over a year and not one problem.
FWIW I have a 50" Panasonic Viera plasma. Three years old. At the time it was a top pick by Consumer Reports. No issues and I would buy another Panasonic in a heart beat.

FWIWII I have a friend who works at Best Buy and he is quite high up in the food chain. He has told me that Christmas deals on Plasma and LCD TVs are going to be incredible.

FWIWIII I have the opportunity to buy a 65" LCD for $1,500.00..................

FWIWIV Regarding TV size. Always buy the bigger screen if the budget allows it. If you are debating a 42" go with the 50". You will not be disappointed.
After seeing what JF said about Vizio, I've been looking at reviews for them and they are generally very good. They're also cheaper than buying one of the bigger name brands, so I could afford a bigger one. I'm leaning towards going this route, with the Vizio that is bigger, than a Sony/Panasonic/Sharp with the smaller screen. I was thinking I'd get 40"-42", with the Vizio I'd probably be able to get a 47".

Isn't it also a question of how far away from the TV you will be? That's what I have always read.

I bought a 42" two years ago. Other than that, my thoughts are identical.

'ewe - I did read about Ts/973. I asked Jenna to get the scoop. And thanks for the chocolate with chocolate frosting birthday cake but my birthday isn't for another 3 weeks or so. ;)

No screaming baby, but a toddler, about 18 mos. old. Let's see if she can make it thru the flight without crying. Wish me luck. We're about to push back so I'm shutting down. Chat with you all when I get back home!

To some extent. If my memory is correct I think a 50" recommends
that you should be 10' from screen but I think that recommendation is silly.

When Mrs. g and I were shopping for a tv I wanted a 50" or larger and she thought that a 42" or smaller would be sufficient. I bought the 50". Mrs. g rarely admits she is wrong but she will openly tell you that she was wrong thinking a 42" would be ok and she agrees that the 50" was the correct call. (feel free to make a joke)

IF you are a fan of sports (any sport) and those games are broadcast in HD then the bigger screen is awesome. Simply awesome.

But they have a MUCH cooler fund-raising party/concert than anything on the wrong side of the river. :p

I think you got that name from me, but no, we go St. Patrick's which celebrated it's 150th a while ago. Bunch of potato farmers started it. :p Our Lady of Grace is another newbie.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 122: Autumn has arrived.

Has anyone had experience with Panasonic Viera LCD TV's? I found a pretty good deal where they'll throw in a Blu-Ray player online, just wondering if this is a decent TV. Maybe I'll stop at Best Buy on the way home and see how the different ones look, so I don't get a crappy TV.

I've got a smaller Samsung (27") right now and love it. Definitely second the 1080p, especially if you're looking at bigger screens where it actually makes a difference (usually anything over 32 or 37), and since you're a sports fan which also sees the difference. Something you might also want to look for is a TV with digital sound output (coaxial or optical) so you can further upgrade down the road with surround sound/home theater if you're into that stuff like I am.

Good point.

When I bought my TV price was not a factor. Not that I own a money tree but I like watching sports (as does Mrs. g) so I was not going to settle for anything less. I don't spend money on other things/hobbies so spending it on electronics is what I do.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 122: Autumn has arrived.

I think I'll just go to Best Buy and see what they have and what catches my eye. If I buy one today, that'd be great, but if nothing jumps out at me I'll wait. My sister will be mad about not having a TV, but she can deal with it. Besides, I will be on the road for about 2 weeks starting tomorrow, so I won't be there to watch it anyway. She should be happy that I got Dish Network setup so she can watch TV on her little crappy 19" TV from college. :p

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 122: Autumn has arrived.

Dish Network

Speaking of Dish Network. I have Dish Network and I was watching the Twins on FSN last night and there was a message scrolling on the screen that said FSN may not be available on Dish as of 10/1? Anyone else have Dish Network? What's the deal? I have not had the time to look into it...........

I saw that the other day too, luckily the Twins won't be on FSN anymore since Fox or TBS or some other network will carry the playoffs. But I'll be mad if I can't watch the Wild lose this winter.

If appropriate notice is given as to when the date is, it might be possible to arrange a little cake delivery. :p

I just spoke to Dish. Contract negotiations. FSN wants to increase their contract by 50%. As of 10/1 if the contract isn't worked out no FSN until it is.

Get the 120Hz or 240Hz screen refresh. The 60Hz TVs appear much choppier, and if they still sell 60Hz at Best Buy, you will see a noticeable difference.

I have a 40" Toshiba that I bought back in February, and I really like it. I bought a Sony blu-ray/stereo all-in-wonder type system at the same time, and the advantage the HDMI interface gives you is awesome. I pop a disc into the blu-ray player, and the TV automatically switches over to the correct input. I turn on the TV, then the stereo, and I can automatically control the stereo volume through my TV remote without having to go through the hassle of programming remotes - I hate programming universal remotes.

I don't the price versus the Vizio models, but Toshiba was much less than Sony, Samsung and Panasonic.

We bought my mom a 20" Sanyo when we moved her into the nursing home, and I'm not impressed by it at all. Like my Toshiba (probably all brands), it has a setting to automatically choose the best display for whatever broadcast you're watching (16:9 or 4:3) and it doesn't make the picture fit nicely onto the screen. The frames edges are always missing. I don't have that problem with my Toshiba.

I've heard that about the refresh rates before. I think I'm going to go for a 120hz, since the 240's I've seen are quite a bit more $$$.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 122: Autumn has arrived.

Regarding 1080i/1080p versus 720p... it doesn't matter once you get smaller than 40" tv's right?
