Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 118: BoredboredboredBORED

Question for you lodgers.

I've been trying to think of a good gift for my buddy and his fiance for their wedding, and the wedding is tomorrow. Last weekend he told us about their honeymoon plans, they're coming down to "the big city" for a week, going to a Twins game, eating very well, etc. He mentioned specifically that he wanted to go to Fogo one night. A couple nights ago one of the roommates was helping me think of something to get them and she suggested just getting a gift cert. for Fogo, since I already know that they want to go there on their honeymoon. Good idea, or should I not get a gift certificate for a wedding present? I don't know these things....

Okay, well, uh... candlesticks always make a nice gift, and uh, maybe you could find out where she's registered and maybe a place-setting or maybe a silverware pattern. Okay, let's get two! Go get 'em.

Yeah, I don't want to get some crappy present like that, that my buddy is going to hate. I'm friends with him afterall, so I want to make sure I get them something that I know he will appreciate (unlike a bunch of the stuff they will probably get).

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 118: BoredboredboredBORED

Generally gift cards/certs are frowned on for wedding gifts. I think there are cases where they are acceptable - young couples with nothing moving into a new place 1,000 miles away will more appreciate a Target (or similar) card than some pretty glass bowl that they have to lug with them and will never use. Not sure about your case. A gift card may be OK, but I'd rather get them an actual gift. Are they registered anywhere?

I don't think they are registered anywhere down here, they live in BFE northwest Minnesota.

Aren't you a NASCAR type? Of course that would sound like a good time then. :p

Ugggghh.... NASCAR. Race weekend at MIS this weekend and I had to go by the Track earlier today. The Camp Grounds are already filling up fast.

Blame ctf. She informed me via text a couple days ago that she was on her way there, complete with a 1.75 of Captain.

One of the only wedding gifts I still remember (this was in 1995) was the meerschaum pipe and box of cigars my buddies chipped in to give to "us". My wife was amused at this - she didn't get much use out of that gift, after all - but really, if he's a buddy of yours, I would go this route, something you know he wants. He'll remember it.

I had one of those 25 cigars every Sunday night, and now they make up a very fond memory of my first six months as a married man.

There's nothing wrong with cash or gift cards - it gives them the flexibility to get what they need, and it saves you the hassle of *'ing with the stupid gift registry.

... or you could just by them a set of handcuffs and a pair of edible panties.

They probably already have those though....

I thought about buying a cooler, filling it with ice and dry ice, throwing some beer in it and wrapping it up, then writing a note on it saying "At about this point in opening wedding gifts, I thought you'd need a beer." :p

Give them a bunch of gay porn, then - just make sure it's sent from somewhere in Colorado. :p

What he said!

One of my favorite wedding gifts the first time around was a gift cert for a night a resort in Northern NH. A bunch of our friends chipped in to give it to us. When I married Mr. Hit we got a few gc's which worked out well as we were able to complete our registry and pick up some things that we hadn't thought to register for.

I agree. Depending on how much you are going to spend you could spruce it up with other stuff like wine and such. (Since he is from your home town Wrangler jeans, belt buckles, mud flaps, guns and a coon dog would probably do the trick. :D )

the ONLY thing that should be given as a wedding gift is money. now if you know for sure they are going to this place, a gift card is the same. they can spend that there and have a blast, knowing that most of the evening is on bb_dl!

you have the mookie seal of approval here!

my freshman yr roomie was a good kid, who at the time wasn't getting much. one night i was going at it while he was sleeping. we woke him up and i stopped and told him, "hey, let's go for a kit kat". we went downstairs and got candy (while the girl stayed in bed...) and talked for a bit. then went back up and i finished up.

things changed for him. when he got married i gave him an envelope with mookie's approved gift, and a kit kat. he called from their honeymoon and thanked me for the best gift they got.
