Yeah, I've figured out the pale ales are really hit or miss for me. There's rarely an inbetween. Stouts, porters, wheats, almost guaranteed I'll like. The fruity beers (the ones with allegedly "hints" of [insert fruit]) are also hit or miss. I don't mind a hint of it, but sometimes their hint is my "holy crap, is this wine?????"
With time, you also learn which styles of beer you tend to like or not like, so you can load up a "mix your own" sixer with 4-5 brews you know you're probably going to like, plus 1-2 other styles for variety and perspective.
