I think Chili's might be able to beat out Steak N Shake in terms of calories. Some of their appetizers are INSANE.

I was saying that Steak N Shake is going to have the lowest caloric intake out of all those places. I looked up some of Chili's nutritional info. It's pathetic that restaurants like that are allowed to serve that crap. They are killing this country.

Ah. I was going for the angle of "Bob needs a **** sandwich" and was leaning toward the other way. Oops.
And isn't it crazy? I'm not saying it should be illegal, because that would be taking it way too far, but there's no excuse for meals like that. No excuse.

A slice of their cheesecake is actually 'better' for you than all but one of their aps.

There's an easy solution though, one my family almost always adheres to unless it's a special occasion - don't order appetizers.

No. People who CHOOSE to eat those things, and make places successful by eating those things are killing this country. Get it right.

If people want to indulge themselves in huge portions and make themselves fat and unhealthy, that's their choice. It probably means they're likely to die younger and faster (via heart attacks/heart failure) rather than lingering for 20 years and sponging off the system / draining the medicare funds.

Exactly. It's not the restaurants' fault. Bro Gin there sounded rather liberalish. He's gonna shoot himself now. :D

The more interesting issue is how the portions got larger in the first place. My guess is the restaurants are paying for their food at bulk rates and are simply offering up large portions to: a) get rid of their food before it spoils, and b) to avoid any complaints about not serving large enough portions to customers and/or competitive disadvantage with other places.

it's a two way street man. And you know it is. There's gotta be some responsibility on both ends. Mostly though, it's gotta be on the consumer. A consumer needs to be aware of what they are putting in their body. Sure, you order the buffalo chicken salad at Chilis, because hey, it's a salad right? Tell that to the 870 calories, the 55 grams of fat, the 2300 grams of sodium. It's gotta be on the shoulders of the consumer to know what they are putting in.

Now, the restaurants need to do a better job of offering healthier fare and they need to do a better job of getting their calorie info out there.

My solution? Don't eat at these places.

That's been going on for years everywhere. Remember there were 12 oz cans of pop. Then it was 16 oz bottles. Then it was 16oz with 4 oz free (making 20 oz). Now 20 oz is the standard size, and you have liter (LITER) bottles.

Bigger, better, faster, more. It's the American Way.

at Olive Garden, generally a dish there is a serving for 4. That's right. One order of food is a serving size for four people.

Sorry, but if some moron is gonna buy my 870 calorie "salad" at $9 a pop, I'm selling it to him/her. I'm in the business to make money.

And serving sizes are BS. Look at a bottle of pop (20 oz). That's 2.5 servings. That's so when you look at the nutritional value, it looks better (since everything is listed "per serving")

probably because happy customers are full customers and they'll return... doesn't seem hard to me.

It's all about perceived value. The middle class, who view eating a chain places as a "big night out", want the best bang for their buck. Thus, these restaurants (which, in the end, are all really the same place with different decor and some different menu items) strive to outdo one another somehow.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #112: Son of "Filling in for the night shift"

I avoid Chili's & Olive Garden for the simple reason neither place is very good.

I must be 4 people then:D Of course I've eaten at the Olive garden once maybe twice

haha.

I'm by no means advocating that we as consumers are not responsible for what is happening here. I mean, both Brent and MNS smoke. I don't blame the tobacco companies. I blame them. Nobody from Marlboro held a gun to their heads and said smoke.

Me, I spend way too much money on workout crap. No one forces me to do this. I don't blame BlueSeventy, Nike, Mizuno, or Pearl Izumi.

But these restaurants certainly aren't helping in making this country any less fat.

Why should they? If people change their eating habits, then the restaurants will change. See (sorta) McDonald's and their salads, etc.

I'd die for an Olive Garden here... the italian place down the street was a massive ripoff... "chicken parmigiana" amounted to a boiled chicken breast covered in mozeralla and some spaghetti... I think I paid $20 for that privilege. If I didn't feel like I need to live near the city and if my work weren't on planet X I'd so live in the suburbs.

That sounds like Olive Garden.
