Yeah, this thing managed to tear up the sheet rock pretty well. Considering it was anchor screwed into the studs in the wall, I'm sure it was just far too much weight on there. I'd only had the books on this shelf for about a month, before that it was just knickknacks and crap. I don't really have the space for another bookshelf so this just sucks all around.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

Most of my furniture came from outlet/overstock stores. For example, I got a decent couch, loveseat, a couple lamps, a coffee table and two end tables (although the tables were junk) from Slumberland outlet for a grand. The coffee table I have now (about 3' x 3', and 2' high) for $50 from some random outlet store. There are deals out there, just gotta find them.

Try garage sales/church sales/etc.

ah.... my thing is more getting things that look right... while I should be saving for a house (holy hell, that'll never happen here) I want to get my place to look good. I could have just been a man and bought any old thing... but if I ever get people here I want to have this place look good. My problem is I'm a guy... I don't have an eye for this stuff and other people have better things to do with their lives.

Still could use various bits of incidental stuff... no car makes a lot of those things hard. Another good reason to get a female presence in my life. I just want to know what I should get and then go and do it.

These aren't ugly things I have. I, too, kinda want stuff to match up.

And mookie, I sorta share your attitude. Hence, me not having a nightstand in my bedroom. My clock is on the floor. Good enough for me. :D

Not saying you don't... I was talking/venting with a co-worker who has been helping me in the gym... I think I just want to be in a situation like at home (but better to reflect the step up in the world) where I have all the normal things I need that you'd have in a normal place. I want to be settled in and not have to think about the next thing to improve this place.

edit: as it is... I need a speaker mount or two... i'm getting sick of having this rear speaker in my back.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

Got home from Houghton at about 10:30 this morning. My dad decided that it was a good idea to leave town at 4AM. So I got very minimal sleep before having to leave. Then I slept pretty much the whole way home and then for a couple hours after I got home. :p

I realized as we left the hotel room that I hadn't bought any KBC yet, and there isn't anywhere to get beer at 4AM. Sorry about that, Brent. :o

I thought it was pretty cool that not only did John Scott continue to take classes and get his mechanical engineering degree, he came back up to Tech and walked in commencement, after playing a couple seasons in the NHL.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

That's easy. Don't think about it.

Or if you can't do that, just concentrate on one thing/area per month or two. Like, now you want a speaker mount, so concentrate just on your audio/video shelving appearance. TV stand, mounts, shelving, whatever. Forget about bookcases, end tables, kitchen stuff, etc. Just worry about AV. That's all that exists at this point.

Scout out clearance stuff at the local stores (if you are looking for value, and don't want to spend a bunch of money), etc, or wait for a sale. Memorial Day is coming up, as is Father's Day, which are both excuses for stores to run sales.

bbdl: no worries.

A nice Sunday is drawing near dinnertime for The Shots. The executive chef has announced we'll be having roasted veggie enchiliadas as our entree. Fresh strawberries and chocolate lace almond cookies for dessert. Bon appetit!;)
I'm convinced I should just move in with you and Mrs. Shot; I'd never be told to "eat a sandwich" again...

Evening, Lodge. People actually believe that the Acai berry is some kind of miracle cure. HAH!

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

Good afternoon tLodge. I was out way past my bedtime last night so I didn't even get out of bed until after 12 today.

We has some sort of big tourney here this weekend as well. When I walked into the restaurant last night the entire patio was full, as well as the restaurant. Of course, it was prom night, so no-one thought it would be busy. (for some reason teenagers don't take their prom dates out for pizza). Amazingly, everyone was happy with their meals and we didn't run out of silverware.
 Really? Where do they go? My prom "date" and I went to Perkins post prom in our dresses.
this bookcase is driving me nuts... I'm down to one screw which I'm sure is in the right place. Every time i go to finish it the wood starts to leverage itself apart (not splitting)... I'm trying to find the weak points and I do notice somewhat of a bend... I just want to get this done and off my floor.

For reference this is the IKEA Expedit bookcase... blah. I've been waiting to get a bookcase for several months now.
:o I love that bookcase and it's accompanying shelves (I have the 1 column shelving unit as does my mom). The 4 shelf bookcase is a pain to assemble (helped a friend do it). I am in the minority here, I love IKEA. :o
just saw on the tv that this "could take days".
 Better not!! I need to read through the warnings and find out what to do and not to do (other than boil my water for drinking, teethbrushing, etc).
wood to wood...
Didn't know you swung that way!
Heading out to eat pho
Mmmm. Haven't had that in a long time. Maybe this week... :)

I don't know. This was before the prom anyway, post prom our kitchen is already closed.

I'm with you, I love IKEA. We bought the 4x4 square bookcase and Rob and I had it together in about 20 minutes. I was afraid it was going to a nightmare and it so wasn't. And it has proven to be worth the relatively small amount of money I paid for it.

that's what i ended up getting... I just had more problems than most. :p

I agree. Every piece of furniture you saw at my apartment was IKEA. Mom took tcbg and I there after I'd moved into the new place (that isn't the size of a shoebox) and furnished it. Got dresser, bookshelf, 2 dvd shelves, table, 2 chairs, tv stand, 3 shelving units, coffee table, and some knick-knacks for under 1000. The fun part was getting all that into my mom's CRV (even though it's all flat-packed). TCBG was a life-saver - got all the furniture into the car in one trip - and pretty much assembled it all.

I was wondering if you had gotten the same one. I'm impressed that you got it put together as it really seemed to be a two person job. It took Rob and I about 20-30 minutes to assemble, I'm sure it would have taken me a couple of hours if I had to do it alone. (plus, I'm not sure I would have been able to lift it upright and move it into place alone).

I heard about that shopping trip. It was before I had ever been to IKEA, I was totally amazed when tCBG told me what you got into a CRV!

I so wish there had been an IKEA around when I got my first apartment, I might have real furniture a lot sooner.

SB, The chef here at Chez Shot is outstanding, period. We have our fair share of sammiches, too. We grilled a nice 2.1 lb. London Broil on Friday, ate quite a bit of it for dinner and had sammich meat for the weekend. I believe I heard the chef mention something about using a portion of the leftovers for beef stroganoff early in the upcoming week.

You wouldn't be told to eat a sammich here at Chez Shot, but you would certainly retain the option to do so. ;)

oh, I've done some things I shouldn't have been able to do on my own... the TV stand... getting the TV onto the mount (to be fair, it was on the glass leading to the mount)... put together the bed I'm on... though I did a number on the wall getting the temporary metal frame apart... and then there was the desk I bought from the container store... I bought it in parts but the store is three-quarters of a mile down the road... long way to travel with a wood desk top. That was the 2nd dumbest thing I've ever done (dumbest was walking for chinese food during a snow storm last year during grad school).

These things don't get themselves done.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

Speaking of furniture, I just built this piece from scratch. I measured it to fit on top of the base to an entertainment stand that no longer worked for me because I got the HDTV that didn't fit any longer - old one designed for a 27" tube.

ETA: I need to build some bookshelves next. I'm thinking four or five levels at ~6 ft long, 11 inches deep. I'll need my brother's help to cut the plywood sheets, though. I don't have a table saw.
