Wow, very nice of your grandparents to help with school.

It was perfect timing for us, I've been been buying mother mining stock via an ESOP program since I started so we had a nice little nest egg to invest. We are in Chisago City (you apparently live at our halfway point) so one can't beat the location even if the lake isn't the clearest.

Well, it was an inheritance by that point. :o :( Grandpa had passed, and grandma wasn't doing well and died shortly thereafter, so we ended up selling both the cabin and their main home within a couple years of each other.

And yeah, more or less between your lake property and the Cities. Definitely a great area to invest in.

I own my husband. :p

FYP.

You're right, Chisago City is pretty much a suburb now. :p

My grandpa has a nice cabin in Breezy Point. I talked about it in TRP not too long ago. He bought it in '86 for $25,000, now it is valued at about $300,000.
That says about all you need to know about the Brainerd Lakes area over the last 20 years.

Hi, Lodge. Might be picking up an extra job, exactly what I wasn't going to do, especially after last summer's schedule from h-e-hockey-sticks.

It's crazy how lake property skyrocketed over the last 20 years. We were looking into getting a lake place around 7-8 years ago. Started with Brainerd area, then moved toward Alex, then up by DL (That's when I found out Detroit Lakes is the lake spot for most of North Dakota), then Ely. Finally realized we couldn't swing anything while the kids were in college. I know a lot of places have come up very affordable in the last couple of years, but now we're like others and just happy to make our payments and take a cruise once in a while. We still don't want to stick our necks out too far :o

When the wife an I moved back to MN in '89 we discussed buying lake property or cabin/home. We decided that we didn't want to have to maintain two places and if we had a lake place we would feel obligated to spend our time there, thus cutting down on other travel. Now that we have a kid, I often wished we had decided differently. :(

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #109: It's the Offseason, now what?

Lakefront property spiked everywhere. I've noticed some prices lately that seem to be down but still expensive. Most camps have turned into homes and thats one of the reasons for the price spikes. When I was kid people had "camps" now they have TVs and Sat dishes, dish washers, hot tubs etc

Yep. We sold around '91, and got well over $100k. If we'd sold a few years ago, guaranteed it would have been over $200k for the same house. In the mid-80s, it sounds like we'd have been lucky to get $40k.

My parents are actively looking in to lake property now, in Michigan. My dad has wanted a place on a lake forever. I think they are both ready to retire and will be selling the house in Maryland and moving back to MI.

In Maryland it seems to be a law to not use it at anytime. Just drift in and out of lanes as close to other cars as you possibly can without regard to speed limit.
What part of Maryland are you referring to? Out in hickville people drive the speed limit, maybe 2 mph over. I can't stand it as I've become a Michigan driver over the past few years. I may have made it up to 85 mph on this mornings commute before I realized what speed I was going. It's not my fault, I got in the left lane and was just keeping pace with traffic..until I looked at the speedometer.

I ticked off a coworker once when I commented on his lack of turn signal use. He was trying to cut across 2 lanes of crawling traffic. Couldn't understand why no one would let him in. I suggested he let them know his intention. Then he yelled at me, "Just let me drive!". I hate being in a car with that guy.

:D The current structure is a dump but the lost is very nice. My in-laws bought the place ~1962 and back in the day it was way out there, now it's almost a suburb. We often drive up just for the evening during the summer - have dinner and ski for a while and drive home.

It really worked out well for us, my wife and I were actually looking for a new house in St. Paul, when her parents found out asked us if we'd be interested in buying the cabin, it was an easy easy decision. Her dad had some health problems ~6-7 years ago and one of the results was they realized they needed to start thinking about the future of the cabin. We got a good price in exchange we agreed to keep it a family (she as 5 siblings) cabin for several years.

I don't have any good pictures on FB from the summer, here it is in the fall:

This is beautiful!

I own both mine and my husband's cars. :p

Good Morning Lodge! Another gorgeous day down here.

This made me smile.

Anywhere around DC/Baltimore. It's a nightmare.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #109: It's the Offseason, now what?

Went to the doctor today. Got my weight limit increased to 20 pounds that I can occasionally lift and carry, but no more. She also encouraged me to go to Alpha One and attempt to pass their test for my driver's license. Legally, it was never taken away (somehow) but if I were to in an accident behind the wheel, the other person could complain that I had head surgery and tried to hide it. I stopped driving voluntarily because of the headaches and dizzy spells. I could probably drive again, but if a spell hits when I'm sitting here no one gets hurt - if I'm behind the wheel of a car...

She agreed that it was laughable that because I hadn't sought treatment for my headaches they had just gone away, as the genius at the SSA wrote. I have accepted that headaches are a way of life now - I'm not going to go running to the doctor or the ER whenever I get a headache. I'd have to move in :p I still have a brain tumor, so of course I'm going to have headaches and dizzy spells. I take Ibuprofen and frequent naps to deal with them. If they become severe enough (like they did before the surgery) then I'll go to the ER.

She said I was disabled now, and couldn't see how I could work, but I'm young enough that with rehab (and if the tumor doesn't come back) I might be able to regain some of my previous skills.

So I can tell the SSA to stuff it. :p

So, if I understand this correctly, because you saved the system money by not seeking a more expensive, but not necessarily better, treatment you are not disabled. Dumb.

Soo... If I can't even keep down water and have a fever... Should I go to the doctor?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #109: It's the Offseason, now what?

Suggestions wanted.

I'm having some friends over Sunday to be a gaming nerd (not quite dungeons & dragons nerd, more like Munchkin and Settlers of Cantan nerd).

Anyway, I think I'm going to make pizza. Right now I've decided one will be bbq chicken (with bacon of course). What should I make for the other one? Right now I'm thinking boring pepperoni or maybe a white pizza of some sort. Any ideas are welcome.

My friend is going to bake a cake and wants to know what kind I want. I've never had endless possibilities open to me before (i'm used to buying a box of cake mix). Any good ideas? Maybe I should have him bake me a cake with Guinness in it. I was also thinking maybe something with a coffee flavored frosting.

1) Maybe a supreme type pizza if some of the guests are veggie eaters.

2) German Chocolate cake. End of discussion.

I'd go with something simple as your second pizza, maybe a margherita? Simple tomato sauce (just blend some canned tomatoes with some olive oil and salt and pepper), a sprinkle of parmesan, then top with slices of fresh mozzarella and fresh basil. Add some fresh tomatoes if you like.

Cake is delicious. I don't think you can go wrong there. I'd ask for something with cream cheese frosting, because I love cream cheese frosting.
