Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #108: Let's see if we can finish this before the Frozen Four.

I was talking to a poster after the Hockey East tournament who said that he read that 40% of the houses in Detroit are abandoned and that there was a movement to level entire sections of the city.
I just randomly zoomed into a part of the city, just outside of downtown and in that part of the city there were only 1-3 houses on each block, the rest of the blocks were empty lots. Its really sad actually. I'm searching for crumbling warehouses/plants and huge old abandoned mansions now.

Already started. Lots of urban wild growth and gardens cropping up.

Some of the houses that are left can be bought for four figures. Yes, you could theoretically pay cash for a house in Detroit.

Downtown Detroit (where the F4 will be) is kept pretty well, as it has some tourism value. Just don't go outside the area around the arenas and Greektown, or you'll be taking your life into your own hands.

Stroll through Sagnasty and look for the boarded up houses. See how many of the big yellow arson signs you can spot (gangs like to squat in them as drug dens, then burn them down when the police catch on.)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #108: Let's see if we can finish this before the Frozen Four.

Try Saginaw east of the Saginaw River.

Look in the area around 5th-20th Streets where they intersect Lapeer Avenue, Federal Avenue, etc. The area around Buena Vista Township is another winner. You'll notice there are parts of the city the camera van didn't even try to go into

Flint anywhere outside of downtown and around Hurley Hospital is pretty bad too. I went up there last fall to submit a resume, and on my way out I took a wrong turn down a "residential" street. Had people giving me the, "What the hell are you doing here?" look. Literally slammed the car into reverse, whipped around, and floored it out of there.

Detroit was fun. Don't be haters.

Not trying to be a hater, and I didn't mean to bring it up because of the frozen 4, which is why I mentioned it here. To me it is history and and a sad history, how the city has been left to crumble in some areas.

Detroit is fine if you know where to go and where not to go.

Yeah, as I mentioned the Joe Louis/Ford Field/Comerica Park area is actually pretty nice, and they're definitely working hard to keep that up.

Rule of thumb is don't leave the boundary formed by I-75, I-375, and the Lodge (US-10.)

I just got reminded that I have a speaking engagement scheduled in September at a national conference. I better start thinking about what I'm going to say.:o From the description in the advertisement, I'm going to be riveting.

Yeah, those boundaries are a safe bet.

According to both my mom and a family friend, there is good, authentic food to be had in Mexicantown, but the neighborhood itself (SW Detroit) sucks.

Hi, Lodge.

They brought in convicts to help out with the work at the arena today. Yeah, that was a bit nervewracking...

I probably haven't had the most productive day. After looking around Detroit on Streetview I have been reading articles and blogs about old buildings and neighborhoods in Detroit and how they have decayed. Some websites are trying to promote restoring old historical buildings and others are purely informative. The pictures are amazing, especially how awesome some of the buildings were in their hayday, and what they look like now. Someone from the History channel should look into this, it has the potential to be a great informative show.

Detroit is fine if you know where to go and where not to go.

Or just roll in a pack of anywhere between 4-17 people and you can run the town. :D

And you're welcome for the drive-in directions.
I know!! I am siked!!

Ok, so I got the "thanks but no thanks" e-mail from the other airline I interviewed for. I thought this interview went really well. This is really starting to be a kick in the junk. I'm able to get the interview; then not get the job.
I was unemployeed for a while in the last bad job economey and it sucks. I know from my own life experience it seems that there are times where life just keeps kicking you while you are down, but I have also experienced that the cycle comes around. You are too hard of a worker to let it get to you and I am certain things will cycle around and I know none of that helps right now.

Detroit (and like cities like Gary), have been experience decline for the last couple of decades, it just is sort of hit the spot light with the recent down turn in the econemy. There has been stories about tearing down some of the houses and turning the lots into urban gardens.

I love looking at some of the photo work that people do in these abandonded buildings, a quick look on flickr and you can see some amazing photographs. just using the Detroit Train Station, that is a HUGE building, amazing archtecture and it sits there sad and decaying in the middle of nowhere. It is not even connected to neighborhoods.

I am kind of surprised there hasnt been a special on it. I would like to see Ken Burns do it.

There have long been campaigns to try and save/renovate at least a few of the buildings that exhibit pre-Depression architectural styles. Some successful (the new Westin Book-Cadillac, the Dime Building), others not so much (the former Statler Hotel, which is now a parking lot).

A few years ago (well, close to a decade ago) they also renovated a lot of buildings in the business district on Woodward (by the old Hudson's store). It takes a long time to undo 30+ years of incompetent and corrupt city management.

The biggest change I noticed in the last decade was that the Grand Circus Park/Foxtown area cleaned up fairly well once both new stadiums were in place. There are actually reasons to walk down there now.

This reminds me of that scene with Randy Quaid driving in Quick Change: "It's bad luck just seeing a thing like that!"

Who was it who had a lengthy post on here about how Detroit seemed to do everything bigger and better when it came to industrialization, urban sprawl, and urban decay?
