*thumbs up*

Took a little longer than I thought to cook dinner tonight. :o But it is tasty. Chicken, broccoli, peppers, onion over cavatappi with a garlic white wine sauce. :)
Sounds delicious. Will have to get the recipe from the Cooks thread.

Mornin' Loj. Thanks for the well wishes for Mrs. Rocket. She is doing better. Had a blockage in her bile duct causing liver levels to be very elevated. Procedure to clean that up went well yesterday, levels coming down. Waiting for a slot to open in surgery to remove the gall bladder. Not the worst surgery ever, but not alot of fun either. She can't wait to be home.
Great to hear!

Well I just found out I've been put on company convenience leave which is basically a fancy way of putting somebody on unpaid status. The best part is it takes effect on Saturday. Thanks for giving me some notice.

Sure glad I made all the sacrifices I have made over the last three years for the company.

Thanks everybody for the well wishes. The company changed dramatically when we were bought out three years ago. The things my coworkers and I have experienced over the last three years is why I've been looking for another job. A lot has happened that I've never posted in the lodge because it would serve no purpose and in the end it would just sound like I was b!7ching. I'm not surprised this day came I was just hoping that I would beat them to the punch and be able to find the right job.

Unfortunately there really isn't much in the Twin Cities for engineers at this time (and has been this way for the last three years) so my options are very limited/non existent.

Oh well. Life goes on and they're are people who have it a lot worse them me so I shouldn't feel sorry for myself.
Still, your company shouldn't haev treated you like that. Keep your head up, keep doing good things, and good things will happen!

Yeah, it was cold today, but spring is supposed to be here in the next couple of weeks. I can't wait! :)
I can't wait for spring to get here either.

Evening, Lodge. Today was a better day, and I think after going through orientation for Crossmark, I'll like working for them a bit better than Sam's. However, I don't know where they found the aprons we're supposed to wear, but they're hideous.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 103: The Greatest Rep... to this point.

I met my best friends in college after I told this chick off who was making fun of our Chem professor. He was a great guy just over from China. He tried really hard and worked so hard to make sure we got wha the was teaching. The nasty chick would mimic and mock him and one day just as I was starting to get something she started up. I went off on her and he stopped to let me. Considering that was 30 yrs ago I don't think jerks change with the generations.

Not really... I've heard some stuff over the years... I threw a kid out of my office once for saying something awful. The bottom line is the more like them you are the better off things get... and the more international you are the worse it is. The teacher or the TA is an obstacle to a grade to these people. The more you can dehumanize that obstacle the better you can feel about yourself.

Most people teaching stats are adjuncts... its a difficult role to be in and even then those who do teach are probably doing it with the best of intentions... now I'm not trying to gloss over everybody but its not a role I'd ever want to be in for a day-in day-out situation. Then again, my TA reviews were terrible... I'm not proud of it but that's life... I'm not meant to teach freshman stats. Now, that being said, I'd wish that the prof would grow a spine... but then again, if you're an adjunct you don't want to make waves because that will hurt your chances of returning.

This is college... idle chatter is fine... god knows I do it... but honestly if you're going to be a screw up go do it elsewhere.

'ewe... work hard, get a good grade... statistics goes away just as soon as data becomes unimportant... somewhere around half past never. Let the idiots undercut themselves.

The professor is of Asian descent, but I honestly don't think her accent is that difficult to understand (and I had a terrible time with Calc. 1 for that reason - prof. with an incomprehensible accent). Do you need to pay attention? Absolutely, but it's clear that she's been teaching stats in the US for quite some time. Anyway - she writes everything on the board, so even if you don't listen to a word she says and just take notes the whole time, the concepts are laid out very clearly.

I agree with the screw up thing - I think that's what gets me most. I already have a degree, this is my second time around because I spent some much time in college screwing up (or around or whatever). It just seems nonsensical to pay money (or throw it away essentially) to screw up your classes. (Since this is a state school in an urban area, I would say most of these kids are lower-middle class kids and tuition isn't that cheap.)

I actually am enjoying the class. It's not my favorite, but I find the concepts interesting and they've been applicable in the other classes I'm taking this semester. Could I see myself doing this long-term? Absolutely not. But it is a new way to look at things and, even for me - the math idiot, seems useful in a variety of fields.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 103: The Greatest Rep... to this point.

just got the news. May 1st, I will no longer be employed. :(

If you can drink tonight, have one for me. I'm sick as well. :(

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 103: The Greatest Rep... to this point.

Hey kids. Happy Thursday. Went out for a few tasty alcoholic beverages after work. My normal Thursday night drinking buddy had emergency root canal surgery this week and wasn't able to join me, so anotherco-worker came out with me. We didn't leave till after 8pm. Hottie bartender got a kick out of the fact that I stayed as late as I did, since we usually leave much earlier. And he watched the US-Canada game this past Sunday and said if every hockey game was as awesome as that game was, he would be a hockey fan. I think he dhould be a hockey fan cuz its an awesome sport, and, well, I love it, but that's just me. :)

I have the day off tomorrow - w00t!! Though I'm not going to Vermont, so bummer about that. But I can sleep in and maybe watch some place to go watch the US-Finland game. Or just watch it from my couch.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 103: The Greatest Rep... to this point.

You're probably just mooching off of players who are better than you. :p

That's why I was on teams my sophomore and senior seasons that actually won a few games. I had one goal in my entire 'career' because I couldn't shoot the ball worth crap, so I became a goalie. :D

Your one-goal career was shorter than my one-goal career. I was lousy as a goalie too - tried that my freshman year and stunk it up.

Wasn't quite as bad that last year, which gives you some idea of just how bad I was. :o

At first, I thought this post was about the locker room... and I agreed ;)

14 year old boys, eh? Should we start calling you Chick Love? ;)

We're not talking about THAT locker room...

...right?

Oh God...

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 103: The Greatest Rep... to this point.

So now the Lodge has Rookie of the Year and maybe Chick Love. This place is getting weirder by the minute.

Just a recommendation:

http://www.amazon.com/Cartoon-Guide-Statistics-Larry-Gonick/dp/0062731025

Its a conceptual guide to freshman level stats... rather low on the math and high on the cartoons :)

The reality is most are in there to collect the grade and get on to other things.... that's why teaching it was so hard for me... I don't have the temperment for that. That and I find that level so easy that I have a hard time demonstrating it. Since you're doing this at an older age and on your dime you are seeing it how the professors/lectures/TAs see it a bit more. Most of the people see this as a waste of time and they don't need to know it. A lot of cases that's true... but that's because for a lot of cases they aren't going to ever be important enough to have a need to deal with it. You will be though... why else go back to school?

Also, remember that a lot of kids in that room aren't doing it on their dime. Observation #1 at UMass-Lowell... those who are paying for school take it much more seriously than those who don't. That isn't absolute... I didn't pay for school... but those who did aren't going to **** around.

Let see... I'd take drinking at 3PM... but in my case I'll be using CBS radio (WBZ 98.5FM online) and then catching what i can between squat lifts in the gym at work.

Do me a favor and be drinking something fun. :)

And my high school is now in day 3 of a fairly massive teacher/student sex scandal. Apparently now she was sending lewd text messages to students too.
