Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 102: Hockey Sucks!!!
Fixed.
The Oakland/Buffalo club game was entertaining. Buffalo's coach was ejected for going on a tirade about 15 minutes into the 1st period, then apparently tried to pull a Gwoz and go back into the locker room during the intermission, earning himself another DQ. I was behind the scorer's table with mel & HuskyNation, and got to be in the middle of some cross-penalty bench jawing.
Oh, and this was the most lopsided hockey game I've ever attended, as Oakland won 13-0.
Hi Fade, You "fixed" my post by saying Tech is having a tough three decades. Sadly, that's a fair statement.
I consider myself fortunate to be able to say I've been attending college hockey games longer than most of the posters on this website have been alive.
I vivdily remember what I call "Tech's glory years." In the springs of 1974-1975-1976 something happened which I don't expect to see duplicated in my lifetime. Two teams--Tech and Minnesota--met for the NCAA title three straight years.
Under coach John MacInnes,Tech was absolutely terrific in those years. In 1976 the NCAA title game was played just up the street in DU's old arena. With Mike Zuke, George Lyle, Jim Mayer, Warren Young and Dave Joelson [just to name a few] the Huskies were loaded with talent. It's true that Minnesota won the title that year--and in two of the three years--but Tech was a dominant force in college hockey in the mid 1970s.
I remember the goal Dave Joelson scored --in double OT I believe--to beat Brown enabling Tech to reach the title game for the third straight year. It remains one of the most entertaining tournament games I've ever seen.
I am simultaneously a longtime Denver fan and enthusiastic fan of the WCHA. Speaking only for myself, I take no enjoyment from seeing any team and its fans--in this case, Tech--in the position of having to endure an interminably long period of hockey ineptitude.
As for next weekend's series between Denver and Tech....I remember the 2004-2005 season during which Denver was on its way to the second of two consecutive NCAA titles. Tech was in the midst of what became an 8-25 season record. The Huskies came to Denver in January and on the first night goalie Cam Ellsworth led Tech to a 3-0 shutout win over a Denver team which won the NCAA title three months later. There is always so much talent in the WCHA that I never dismiss the possibility that a team can go on the road--and in the face of what seems to be overwhelming odds--earn an impressive victory.
Tech's ability to compete favorably against all WCHA opponents won't reappear overnight. But please understand there are fans outside Houghton who will enjoy seeing a renaissance in Tech's hockey fortunes. Hang in there.
