Re: Rep Retirement #151: Stop Letting Baukin make polls!

Hi lodge. So on my coworkers last day (last Friday) I handed in my resignation. Only 8 days to go of working in Jackson County. New job is 20 miles from my house instead of 50. Oh, and better pay, better challenges and better atmosphere. I'm looking forward to it.
Congrats and good luck!

Re: Rep Retirement #151: Stop Letting Baukin make polls!

So, question for you engineer type folks, or anyone else that might be able to answer. I've mentioned this before I think but now I need to try and get an actual answer. I need to know a) what causes squeaky/creaky floors and b) can it be fixed? My floor, or maybe it's my wall that separates my bedroom from my next door neighbor's bedroom creaks when my neighbor walks. Now, I have the fake hardwood floors, meaning, it's that laminate stuff. When I walk on it, I can tell it's not affixed fully. But the creak I hear when I walk on it is totally different than what i hear when my neighbor walks. It has gotten progressively worse over the last 6 months, meaning, loud. I can hear her walk, that's not the issue. It's the creaking. It's literally waking me up. Now, I know very little about stuff like this but I wonder if it's some sort of beam under my floor or something that is weakening. And the pressure from when she walks causes the creak. Or maybe it's under her floor. I don't know. I have no idea who to call. I doubt the condo association will do anything. I'd like to hire someone to come here to check it out - like maybe a structural engineer? Maybe just a contractor? I will tell the condo association because if anything needs to be torn up, they will need to know obviously. I just don't know where to begin. Anyone have any ideas? If I thought putting in wall to wall carpeting was the answer I'd do it in a heartbeat but I don't want to go to that expense and still hear the creaking.

Re: Rep Retirement #151: Stop Letting Baukin make polls!

Scarlet, talk to your association first. If something's happening in another condo that's impacting your space so much, there's a chance (don't know how good) that they'll cover something like this. Most squeaking floors are because boards are loose, be it the sub-flooring is loose from the support beams (I-beams or simple 2x6's, I don't know building codes, especially in MA), or the flooring and sub-flooring are loose from one another. What you hear is usually two pieces of wood rubbing against one another. The fact that the sound carries that loudly into your condo makes me think it's more like a support beam and the sub-flooring have a loose connection.

If it comes to your having to do something, a contractor should be able to diagnose these things quickly and easily, maybe even one that just specializes in laying down floors.

Re: Rep Retirement #151: Stop Letting Baukin make polls!

I don't think it's happening in another condo, I think the loose floor boards or whatever it is is in my unit, not theirs. She walks, and well, she's not a small woman, and the pressure causes the creaking in my unit. I can't tell her not to walk. I just want to know if there's a way to diagnose, for lack of a better term, what is causing it. I'll give the condo association a call to see if there is anything they can recommend. I'm not even concerned about whatever it might cost to fix, at least for now. That's why I wanted to call someone on my own but I just don't know who.

The problem is, it happens only when she's is walking in her bedroom, which is either really early (5-7am) or late at night (11pm-midnight). I want someone to hear it when it happens. I don't know of any contractor that would show up during that time frame. Maybe one would, I'd have to check. I really don't want to tell the neighbors yet because if they try to walk to make the noise when I have someone here, it probably will be different.

Re: Rep Retirement #151: Stop Letting Baukin make polls!

So the last few days at work and at home have gone too well. Got to hang out with a friend that I haven't hung out with in probably a year on Sat night, work is smooth (little to no OT in the past week or so), and weather's been grand (drove around for about an hour after work with the top down, just because it was beautiful out).

This is scary.

Please don't let anything bad happen in, oh, about 3 weeks' time...

I don't even live there and I'm sick of the whole thing.

Didn't know you'd been commuting that far. Makes my daily 42 miles round-trip seem trivial.

Break a leg! ;)

Re: Rep Retirement #151: Stop Letting Baukin make polls!

Good luck, Trumpet!

I think the last place I lived where it was more than a 20 mile commute ROUND TRIP was more than 13-14 years ago. :o

Re: Rep Retirement #151: Stop Letting Baukin make polls!

27 miles each way. 8 by car, 19 by bus.

Bus? That's gotta suck. Note to easterners: the midwest is not known for its mass transit, except for Chicago, that I know of.

The buses are actually pretty easy, due in large part to my route being an express route. I pick it up in Apple Valley near the movie theater, less than a mile south of County Rd 42, along Cedar Ave. The next stop is between 9th and 10th Streets along 2nd Ave S in Minneapolis. Given use of the HOV lanes and my making use of that time to read books, the ride goes by pretty quickly. Given that my pass is $76 pre-tax (plus some portion paid by my employer), and the cost for parking downtown is $5/day and up, and average of 21 work days per month and then fuel costs plus wear and tear on my car, it would be smart math if this was a place to do math.

ETA: And the buses are mostly Coach buses, with a few smaller yet well appointed buses rounding out the fleet for the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority.

Gotcha. I am familiar with where the theater is (lived down there for a couple years, coincidentally the last long commute I had, which was to Golden Valley....yeah). And yes, parking costs are a beech in Mpls. Thank God it's not like the east coast in that respect.

Congrats WT!

Car shopping.....ug.

10 miles to work each way....against most of the traffic. :) Then I get to light rail construction on University Ave.....

Raplh failed at the poll/pole/pol/pohl/poul(try). He chose the hockey option before the cup was awarded.

I got a postcard in the mail that I got a free cup of coffee from Starbucks. That doesn't count? ;)
