Re: Rep Lodge 80: In a row?
So, the belt broke, the cam stopped/slowed rotating, leaving a valve open when the piston hit TDC. OK, yeah, that sucks. But I would think that if you replaced the timing belt (which isn't cheap or easy on some cars), you would be able to limp the car to the dealer for trade in, since you should have at least half of your cylinders in usable condition, though it is possible that more damage was done, so that this wouldn't work. The timing belt broke and smashed the pistons, so it's not technically in drivable condition, I don't think.
Well, there are some engines that should just be put to sleep, but then how do you trade an inline 4 in for cash for clunkers? Do those small engines get worse than 18MPG? I seriously don't know, never owned anything but a V8 or a I6 diesel. The sad cases are all of the perfectly good chevy 350s, ford 5.4s and mopar 360s that get killed. Thats not even getting into if anyone is destroying big blocks. It's true. Though, there's plenty of engines that wouldn't count as "perfectly good" either... can you really call a GM Iron Duke inline 4 a perfectly good engine for anything?
