Re: Rep Lodge 125: The Thanksgiving Dinner Version: Gimme Some More...

Thats way too long, check Alton Brown. I'd say 4 hrs or so. I'm doing 2, 15 lb turkeys. One on the grill, maybe 2.5 hrs and one in the oven, about the same

2.5 is what Alton says. I'm going to try his brine this year. Plain brine worked well last year (first year in a long time that I didn't inject and smoke the bird - smoker died and haven't replaced yet).

Good God 'ewe! See what happens when you move north of the border?? ;) Seriously though, take care of that injury. Well, both of them actually. Sorry I missed seeing you guys over the weekend. Was trying to find you both on Saturday. Where were you sitting?
In 110. I was pretty tender on Saturday (fell down the stairs on Friday), so I didn't leave my seat once I got in it. Nice view from there, should I get tix again, I'd consider there. Could see the whole rink, unlike my old seat where I lost 1 corner (thank goodness for the video board).

Thanks for the turkey tips, can't believe I forgot Alton. :o

Good morning, Lodge. Just need to do some last-minute shopping today, and then I'm attempting to make Sara Moulton's French Apple tart this afternoon...

Re: Rep Lodge 125: The Thanksgiving Dinner Version: Gimme Some More...

Morning, Lodge. Crossing my fingers that no more of my friends get black eyes, cut/broken appendages or Communist-shaped bruises! :)

Re: Rep Lodge 125: The Thanksgiving Dinner Version: Gimme Some More...

Yup - my mom is doing this. How many minutes per pound are you supposed to cook the dang bird? Mom said our 26lb turkey should be done in 7 hours?! (It's 20-25 mins per pound for Chix, I figured 25-30 for turkey, which puts us at 13 hours...).

Les - Called dad this morning because finger looks a bit gross and my bruise from falling down the stairs looks bad. (I'm a mess these days... :o ). He just got a bunch of tetanus shots in yesterday, so he's going to bring some home tonight and I'll get one tomorrow morning before we start cooking. Recommended heated compresses for the leg as my bruise is about the size of a softball (into the muscle) and looks like "Russia. Shaped like russia and red, blue, and purple" (according to tcbg).
NO HEAT. If the bruise could still be actively bleeding into the hematoma. Warm salt H2O soaks for the finger. OW!!

Yeah, forecast here calls for rain tomarrow. Might smoke the bird for a bit, then finish the bird off in the oven.

Never tried the bag but remote meat therometer with an alarm set to 160 works pretty well also

I won't be doing the heat anyway because I can hardly run around the house with a warm washcloth on my butt while I'm watching 4 kids and making pumpkin bread. Sometimes dads are just better off left uninformed.

We have 30-50 mph winds here right now, won't be smoking here tomorrow if the wind doesn't die down. Its supposed to so plans are still on on for one smokey bird:D

Re: Rep Lodge 125: The Thanksgiving Dinner Version: Gimme Some More...

Good morning Lodge! Took the day off, so a nice 5-day weekend for me. Not sure what to do today. Maybe get a mani/pedi. I will have to check email a few times, but I can do that while hanging out and watching TV.

So, every Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the local Clear Channel behemoth pop radio station hosts this Turkey Toss. Started as a lark, but has grown into this yearly event. They get about 10-12 high schools to participate, take two players from a high school football team and they have to toss a frozen turkey. The school that tosses it the furthest wins. And this morning, my high school won!! Yay! I was excited to hear that!! I should have gone - they did it right down the street from where I live.

As God is my witness...I thought turkeys could fly.

Re: Rep Lodge 125: The Thanksgiving Dinner Version: Gimme Some More...

quiet round these parts today
Just spent the last 45 minutes rolling out a puff pastry sheet, peeling and slicing apples, and then building an apple tart. I'll know how it turns out in another 35 minutes.

Re: Rep Lodge 125: The Thanksgiving Dinner Version: Gimme Some More...

I'm downloading the new operating system software onto my iPhone. When it started, it said 35 minutes. So I let it go, started reading a magazine, etc. Looked back 10 minutes later, now it says 44 minutes remaining. Does that sound normal? I have a feeling something is going to screw up. Why do these things always happen over a holiday?

Are you upgrading the iPhone on a windows or Mac machine? I just upgraded my iPod Touch two nights ago and it took almost an hour to download the update and apply it (using a laptop with Windows XP). A friend commented on my Facebook that it only takes him 10-15 minutes to perform the upgrade on his MacBook. :(

It shouldn't screw up. My iPod didn't have any trouble this time upgrading to iOS 4.2 (It did have trouble upgrading from iOS 2 to 3)

Re: Rep Lodge 125: The Thanksgiving Dinner Version: Gimme Some More...

I put the latest I tunes on my touch and now it won't sync:(

Re: Rep Lodge 125: The Thanksgiving Dinner Version: Gimme Some More...

I guess everyone decided to use Alton's brine this year. First store I went to had NO vegetable stock left, second one had one 32 oz. box left.:(

Used one box veggie, one box turkey stock, water salt, spices etc. I expect it'll be fine. It's out on the screen porch right now.

Re: Rep Lodge 125: The Thanksgiving Dinner Version: Gimme Some More...

Stupid Reynolds roaster bags. Blew through the first one- No idea how. 2nd one came with a leak.. Now brining in the canning pot with a smaller lid in the pot with cutting board and most of my cookbooks on top to keep it submerged. * oven bags. Reynolds is going to hear from me!
