Rensselaer Engineers: Pick to Click: 2012-13 Edition

Re: Rensselaer Engineers: Pick to Click: 2012-13 Edition

Rules are rules.
Certainly. And the decisions of the judges (that be burgie12) are final.

However neither the original post in this thread nor the one dealing with this particular weekend * (#215) mention when the picks need to be in. They only discuss under what conditions they may be changed. It seems reasonable to me that someone who hasn't made any selections can still make picks for the games that haven't been played which is what MavHockey14 did. But as I said, the decisions of the judges are final. :)

* The term weekend is used rather loosely here since none of the three games are actually on the weekend. :D

Still a lot of people missing. I hope everyone is having an excellent Boxing Day.

Picks freeze tomorrow at 7pm Central when the puck drops at the NHC.

Re: Rensselaer Engineers: Pick to Click: 2012-13 Edition

Alright... who's picking O'Connor and DeSmith?! :D ;)

Congratulations to Ralph! He wins his second week of the year and takes the overall lead, too. This is the first time that hawthr has been displaced from the top of the standings.

There was a lot of movement in the standings with none of the Top 15 posters are in the same position that they were in after the games at Yale and Brown.

There is a bit of a gap opening between Ralph and hawthr and everyone else. It's a 6-point gap between 2nd and 3rd with no more than 2 points between individual places after that until you get down to the 5-point gap between 11th (RPIHFH) and 12th (REDaero).

This "weekend" was a clear example of the importance of picking players on the correct nights. For example, Bubela was worth 4 points on Thursday and 5 on Monday and Zalewski was worth 3 points on each of those nights, but they were not involved in the scoring on Friday. Or, for SCSU, Prochno had an assist on Thursday's game but no points on Friday.

On Thursday, Milos Bubela had a pair of goals, but was worth more on Monday, so Mike Zalewski's three assists made him the most valuable Engineer. Nobody picked Zalewski. Jonny Brodzinski (1st goal) (myself, lugnut92, Ralph Baer, and TuteScrooge), Kalle Kossila (2nd goal) (engineerhockeyfan, hawthr, RKarger, and RPIHFH), Andrew Prochno (assist on Kossila's goal) (nobody), and Cory Thorson (3rd goal) (nobody) were each worth 2 points for St. Cloud.

On Friday, Matt Tinordi potted RPI's lone goal, making him the most valuable PtC pick of the night. Nobody picked him and nobody got any points from their RPI picks on Friday. For the Huskies, Ryan Faragher got the win and Ben Hanowski scored their first goal, making them worth two points each. Nobody picked either of them.

On Monday, Milos Bubela (myself, hawthr, Ralph Baer, and vizoroo) scored twice and assisted on Zalewski's goal, making him the most valuable player of the night. Josh Phillips (nobody) scored the Pioneers' second goal of the afternoon and was worth three points since he is a defenseman.

Link back to the title post with details on scoring

RPI travels east to face off against their former league foes. The last time they played both teams in the same season was as recent as the 2009-10 season.

BU just got embarrassed in Denver, losing 6-0. UNH lost to their in-state rivals before needing overtime to beat Bemidji State in the consolation game of Dartmouth's tournament.

Picks for the weekend must be in by 7:30PM on Friday.

You may not choose the following players for this game:
Rensselaer: Jacob Laliberte NOR Nick Bailen
Boston University: Cason Hohmann NOR Matt Grzelcyk
New Hampshire: Kevin Goumas NOR Trevor van Riemsdyk

Re: Rensselaer Engineers: Pick to Click: 2012-13 Edition

So, I want to address another question to the crowd. For next season, I'm considering changing the points distribution (specifically for the goalies and potentially for everyone if there's any drastic change to the distribution). Since we all love our superstitions, I've become quite partial to the "pick the opposing goalie and get an RPI win" one.

But, the poster that makes said pick is essentially throwing away their potential for points from the opposing team. And, since the NHL has done such a good job of making the world love the loser point... what does everyone think of a "loser point" being awarded if you pick the opposing goalie and RPI wins? But, then, they're pretty much guaranteed at least a point, barring a tie or an unexpected starter in goal. It brings up a lot of side issues that I don't really want to deal with. (Screw NEASWAP.)

Can anyone think of a valid way to introduce this idea? Perhaps only implementing the loser point to the first poster to pick the opposing goalie? Making everything (goals, assists, wins, shutouts) worth more points so the loser point is less enticing? This also brings the idea of negative points for penalties / ejections back to my mind. I haven't done enough research into finding a proper point system for that, though.

Let me know what you guys think. The only time this is a dictatorship is when I lay down the law for when your picks need to be in. :p Otherwise, I like to get some outside opinions.

In the fantasy game where I play, you actually lose a point if you pick the goalie and he loses. Of course, if a loser point is introduced, I'd pick goalies every single time. ;) And actually, I started picking the opposing goalie as a sort of hedge. I'd like to see RPI win, but if we're not doing so hot, I'd rather pick the other team's probable goaltender so as to salvage something. Of course, that worked REAL well when I did a real hedge and picked both goalies for a RPI-Cornell game that ended a 2-2 tie. Perhaps, if you were to do a "loser point", you have one for a tie? Never have one for a loss, because that just asks to have the goalies picked every time.

I still would love to be able to make a goon pick. The player you choose gets 1 point for every 2 minutes of penalty time served, with a bonus point for a PPG scored during the player's penalty or penalty share in the case of 5x3. One major would get rounded up or down, and the player gets credit for a bench minor.

Unless a win is raised to five points (or something) and other points are similarly raised.

I am against the idea of rewarding "bad behavior."

Then how can you award a point for a loss. I am not in favor of points for losses.

Re: Rensselaer Engineers: Pick to Click: 2012-13 Edition

Sung to the tune of "The wheels on the bus". And "All through the town" is replaced with "'cause you're white trash!"

It's more commonly used by UNH fans against UMaine fans, but I find it still applicable.
