Religion: Communion Toast Crunch

Jews for Jesus is just evangelical Christian liars. They're on the Washington Mall all the time -- completely indistinguishable from any Baptist a-hole.

I know people in that group, including a relative, and I completely disagree with you.

Mind you, I don't believe in that, and I have real issues with it, but evangelical Christian liars? You couldn't be more embarrassingly wrong.

I've had lengthy discussions with their very aggressive religio-political proselytizers. They aint shy; they like to stir sh-t up. YMMV out in the treeless lands, but the ones we deal with here in DC are one part Moonie, one part Larouchite, and one part Radical Hebrew Israelites. They're completely nuts and pretty obviously a fraud, and I assume they beat the f-ck out of their womenfolk who all look about 13.

They are Christian evangelical creeps. Except, of course, your relative, who may be a nice rube who is being Amwayed by con artists from San Francisco. There's probably an honest Scientologist out there, too.

Co-worker last night was playing a sermon. Most of it was pomp and circumstance, but the highlight was "if it feels like God is whooping you, that means he has his hands are upon you, and he loves you."

So God is an abusive Father and Husband. Got it.

All her stuff is great.

Point of technicality - similar to shellfish, smoking tobacco is not automatically haram, it can be makruh. It depends on the 'school' of Islam the believer subscribes to and how broadly they interpret certain parts of the Quran relating to bodily self-harm. I've worked with a couple of Muslims who smoked cigs, and they did adhere to the other requirements - no pork, no alcohol, etc. So while it's unusual, it's not expressly forbidden by some sects.

Considering that the gospels were written around 50 years after Jesus’s death by people who were not contemporaries, exactly how accurate are their descriptions of his wounds in the first place? How accurately could you describe the wounds of any particular Vietnam War casualty, 50 years later?

It's no different from all of the alleged bone relics the Church loves to keep around, despite rampant fraud back in the Middle Ages. As long as believers believe, they're still money-makers. Visit any castle in Europe and usually somewhere near the main chapel you'll inevitably stumble into the family vault. All of their private relics, whether bought/bargained for, gifted, or stolen over the centuries, will be on display. "Here lie the bones of St. Butterface of Koblenz. No seriously, totally not just some random woman's femur."

They used to say all the Gospels agreed so that was verification, but then it turned out they were all cribbed from the same source so oops.

Not only that but there were a zillion different versions of Christianity and the winning side burned everything the others had written. Using the Patristic writings to understand Jesus is like trying to understand COVID by only reading what the Florida GOP allowed to be published on it.

I believe it to be what they say it is. Form your own judgments.

joe, you can have faith and still not fall for this. It has always been a painfully obvious scam, like the Donation of Constantine.

Jesus won. His values (most of them; not the sociopath ones which were probably glued on later by the church) have triumphed with Western secular liberalism. "They have the cross, but we have Christ."

I live in Grand Rapids.

While street preachers have increased in number, no one seems to be paying attention. The one's I've seen are ignored and are laughed at.

And while JWs are out in public more often, they don't appear to bludgeon you with their beliefs. They appear to want to have 1:1 conversations and give you their little tracts.

JWs are usually the least aggressive proselytizers. If they have your address info, they prefer to send personal letters first. They also tend to be poor minorities due to the sect's broad discouragement of post-secondary education and wealth accumulation - because THE END IS IMMINENT!
