Regional Rankings

Re: Regional Rankings

Marian was ranked ahead of Augsburg ... and is going on the road.

I wonder if they didn't put in a bid to host? It appears there is a Great Lakes Hockey League game (the only traveling full check adult amateur hockey league in the United States) at Blue Line Saturday, but, gee, you'd think something could be worked out.

Re: Regional Rankings

Regionals just released at NCAA.com and UNE has #2 and Hobart #3.....this is good for Hobart as they love to play on the road to loud fans(just ask the Cadets), more concerned about home game against Genny

Still no data sheets.... they point to 3/31/17. Pretty big fall for Oswego.

Nichols is ranked, while Colby and Fitchburg are not. That would be evidence of geography being the deciding factor in the bracket, but you're only talking about switching #5 and #6 in the east to do it...

Re: Regional Rankings

So , I looked at St. Norbert and noticed that Manhattanville played them back to back nights both games went to OT(one tie one loss), and Manhattanville stats looked pretty solid. What if those games were against Utica? I also noticed that Adrian lost to Salve 6-2 but they did beat Trinity, Williams and Utica although Utica was only 2-1 win that was very competitive. These teams are beatable, why the heavy tilt towards the West?. I am now thinking the Marian selection looks pretty iffy especially if you are Utica, Trinity or Oswego.

The GLHL definitely takes priority over any non-beer selling games.

Re: Regional Rankings

Marian is one of 7 teams in DIII hockey with 20 or more wins. 4 of those 7 teams are in the West. It's not that difficult to determine why there is a heavy tilt towards the west.

Losing the last three, no matter how competitive , was not looked on favorably

Re: Regional Rankings

Yes, that makes sense...and Colby is on a roll. Hobart has proven that home ice is not that critical as the Statesmen have lost the last 3 years at home giving Geneseo confidence, no doubt.

So there are 3 Quarter-Finals in the East.

#2 UNE vs unranked Colby - makes sense
#3 Hobart vs #4 Geneseo - hmmm that's strange
#8 Nichols vs unranked Fitchburg - ok now that deserves an explanation

So while the #8 team is playing at home to an unranked team, the #4 is on the road, and the #3 has to play a highly ranked team instead of one of the unranked ones???? Only teams that couldn't play each other were Colby and Hobart/Geneseo, all the rest are within 500 miles so that doesn't explain it.

I heard Plattsburgh got an at-large bid straight to the Final Four based on proximity to Lake Placid and won't cost the NCAA as much as flying a team in from the West??? Would make about as much sense as this draw does right now.

I covered this below. It didn't look as far fetched as I thought. They protected the #1 seed (Salve Regina) by giving them a bye and a guarantee of one of the lowest seeds left after the first round. It appears they may have switched Colby and Nichols for geography reasons, but that didn't greatly upset bracket integrity. We can argue about the teams they picked (or didn't pick), but the way they matched up the teams that are playing is easily defensible.

Utica won 21 games, lost to Adrian 2-1, but Marian lost to Adrian 5-0 and the stats were not competitive. Also Utica beat Manhattanville twice, last time 7-1, the same Manhattanville that took SN to overtime twice. IMO the earlier win by Marian over the WIAC tourney winner Eau Claire may have impressed the committee.

That could just mean everyone else sucks so it's easy to rack up the wins for the better teams.

That's why the NCAA doesn't just use wins.

Reading this stuff while sitting in the back of a dark locked chem lab while the swat teams look for person/s with guns for over three hours puts a different perspective on things..

THIS! I've looked at these games all year and wondered why the tilt is so heavy on the western side.

Holy chit badger...I'm following this on wktv 2 news. I don't know what to say. All the schools in Utica are on lockdown I believe.

Re: Regional Rankings

Police came soon after my earlier post. After being searched we were led to the student center (rest rooms!) where we staying (and eating!) till we the campus is finished being cleared and we are released.
