if something was this big then somebody who wants to feel important would have fed the info along to somebody else... and if it were that major then there would be winners or losers and the losers would complain. So, I'd expect nothing structural that affects you and I... this could be a TV thing, this could be a ref thing... since its the 3 eastern leagues obviously they are working together on something.
Another thing is it might be major to the leagues, it might be major to those who are operationally within college hockey (those who work and draw an income in this community) but it might not important to those of us who just show up to the games and scream loudly. Heck, for all we know "major announcement" means that "for this holiday season we're partnering with toys for tots"... could be any number of things but you can get a feel of what it probably won't be.

Former NHL Players Association Executive Director Paul Kelly fulfilled his wish to stay in hockey by accepting a job as executive director of the newly-formed College Hockey, Inc.
The Hockey Commissioners Association created the organization for the purpose of raising the profile of Division I hockey. Kelly will be in charge of that mission.
Kelly's hiring will be announced Tuesday at press conference in Boston
A former U.S. prosecutor, Kelly was fired by the NHLPA Executive Committee on Aug. 31, less than two years after he took over as xecutive director. In a short period, Kelly became very popular with the media. But was let go at 3:30 a.m.meeting of 30 player representatives and since then the organization has been in a state of turmoil.
Most of the high profile NHLPA administrators have resigned and there is no timetable to pick a new executive director. Donald Fehr is now serving as an adviser for the NHLPA as it tries to put its organization back together.

maybe a scheduling agreement. AHA play each team 4x. poor ecac teams have to schedule each other in OOC games due to the self imposed restrictions on games by the ivy teams. and hea has that "one year you get the extra home game, next year we do" quirk.
for comedy though, maybe that big goofy looking ref who was THE.WORSE.ZEBRA.EVAH (name escapes me... last i saw him he gave Bavo a penalty for looking at him from the bench, and i feared for Dick Umile's heart as he was yelling at him and turning red). i thought he was a head official in the AHL last i heard though.

If Penn and Columbia had teams, it's a pretty safe bet that we would be a separate league. Maybe they'd add Army and another team to make it more of a full conference, but the Ivies would not be part of the ECAC if the Quakers and Lions had teams.
It's too bad they don't, because NYC and Philly LOVE hockey.

well there are six teams. so you can have back-to-back weekends at each rink for 20 league games (5x4), then free up 2 new OOC games for your ivy 29 regular season'ers.
with the 2 new OOC you could set up new, old matches with the remaining ecac teams if you want.
the other ecac teams want to play a full schedule, let them. the 6 left could take 2 off the aha+rmc/niag 12 -- or more if there are teams that want to go bigger than the traditional aha charter. either way, if hea wants to go to a 9x2 regular season, there are a lot of local OOC games that are suddenly free to cross schedule.
i would have interest in an ivy hockey league. great tradition. great old programs. i'd go watch.

I say all 3 leagues are leaving the NCAA and they're becoming like the English soccer leagues where the bottom 3 teams move down to the lower levels and the top three move up.

Actually, the Ivies were part of the ECAC when Penn had a team. The Ivies benefit significantly from the non-Ivies, specifically Clarkson and RPI and regionally Colgate and Quinnipiac. I've been to every ECAC arena except Bright and the visiting non-Ivies generally bring a good percentage of the crowd to Princeton, Brown, Dartmouth and Yale (Yale's crowds seem to vary based on their team's success). They also benefit from the tradition of the programs at Clarkson, SLU, Colgate, and RPI.
The non-Ivies benefit from the Ivies as well, mainly with name recognition. Basically, the ECAC mix of both Ivies and non-Ivies is a good thing for all parties involved. Columbia will never have a team and Penn seems to have no desire to reenter into the hockey arena. I don't know how the market is in Philly, but Columbia would have very little market in NYC. The fact is that NYC doesn't love hockey; they have a small number of dedicated Rangers fans but NYC is a basketball city.
