Quinnipiac Bobcats 2023-24 Regular Season - Embrace the grind

Looking at the latest Pairwise, looks like a rematch with Maine in the first round. Will be interesting to see the final version with Minnesota at 7.

First Round ECAC Playoff Schedule is set. All single elimination.

Friday
(9) Princeton at (8) Harvard, 7:00
(10) Yale at (7) St. Lawrence, 7:00

Saturday
(11) Brown at (6) Union, 4:00
(12) RPI at (5) Clarkson, 7:00

We get the lowest remaining seed in the quarterfinals, which means we'll host either Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Brown or RPI.

Also, on a side note, congrats to Dartmouth on securing a first-round bye. What a turnaround for the Big Green. Finished in 12th place last season and picked to finish last again this year. Reid Cashman has to be the unanimous ECAC Coach of the Year for 2023-24.

If everything holds to form tonight, we'll be seeing you guys in Hamden next weekend. Princeton dominated us last night and were it not for a brilliant performance by our goalie, you would most likely be facing the Tigers. A one-sided game from the second period to the end.

You should sweep us with no trouble at all because in a stroke of absolute genius (I'm being sarcastic here in case anyone doesn't pick up on it), our coach decided last night to play the game not to lose. We held back on forechecking allowing Princeton easy access into our D zone all night. If we try that next weekend, you guys should win by 5 or 6 goals easily.

Surprisingly we get RPI next weekend at The Bank. The Engineers stunned Clarkson 3-2 in Potsdam.

Next week's Quarterfinal matchups. All best-of-three series.

(12) RPI at (1) Quinnipiac
(8) Harvard at (2) Cornell
(7) St. Lawrence at (3) Colgate
(6) Union at (4) Dartmouth

RPI it is. Let's go.

Go Bobcats!!

Also, Harvard at Cornell in the playoffs is mighty tasty. Worth the price of admission at Lynah next weekend.

(I'm very glad we didn't have to deal with this one-game elimination first-round. What a crock that is. Really feel for Clarkson that one bad night ends their season. Shouldn't be that way)

It wasn't one bad night. It was one bad season.

No way on God's green Earth should a #34-38 PW team have a shot at the NCAA's. That's absolutely ridiculous.

No disrespect (to you) intended, but that sort of a possible scenario just exposes the AQ calculus for what is is: a cynical farce.

Disagree with you about that a bit -- every league should have a team advance to the NCAA Tournament. Otherwise you end up having D-1 leagues that aren't really D-1. Had they advanced and won the Final, they would have deserved it. Atlantic Hockey deserves to have a team in the tournament, as does every low-major league in basketball.

Clarkson was never likely winning the tournament, but to have your season end on a one-game knockout feels strange. They used to do 3-game series in the first round. It seems strange they moved away from it. Potentially turning down at least 4-8 postseason ticket-selling gates every year. The first round should be 3-game series.

I think they did it for two reasons; one, the grind of possibly playing six games in nine days with travel and two, most schools have mid-terms in March before Spring Break so to ease the burden, they reduced it to a one-and-done. It does create more opportunities for upsets such as RPI over Clarkson but that's what you live with using this format. And frankly, Clarkson should not have waited until the third period to get going. That's on them.

Wasn't as easy as I thought tonight but sweeping at home is really special. The guys hung in there and did what they needed to do to win the series. I knew RPI would be a tougher out tonight but I believe our skill and conditioning trumped the kitchen sink that RPI threw at us.

On to Lake Placid where it looks like we'll face SLU while Cornell and Dartmouth meet in the other semi. Should be a fun weekend, even if I can't make the trip.

I have never made the trip to Lake Placid for the ECAC champs. Been there plenty of times to ski. Usually I make the decision to go to the Regionals instead but am thinking of maybe going this year. Our history in Lake Placid / outside of Capital region not so great. SLU will be ready...as well as the winner of Cornell / Dartmouth. Anyone else thinking of going? Weather looks a little colder this week so skiing would be an option there or in Vermont.

SLU's goalie had a ridiculous weekend against Colgate. And with our goaltending issues this year, I really hope we don't get goalie'd in the semifinals.

All due respect, we don't currently have a goaltending issue. Vinny has been stellar since taking over the net. Our problem is consistency in front of him, and not pressuring goalies having a "good" night.

Every goalie going to Lake Placid has the ability to steal games. We need to get them moving around so we get better chances (and the bounces).

For those of you making the trip up to Lake Placid this weekend, here are the fan sections to purchase tickets in

Quinnipiac - Section 24 (our band will in Section 25)
Dartmouth - Section 16
Cornell - Section 11
St. Lawrence - Section 3

See you up there! Go Q!

Did some playing on the Pairwise Predictor ... looks like these are our most likely scenarios:

Lose in the ECAC Semifinals: 9 seed
Lose in the ECAC Final: 7 seed
Win ECAC Tourney: 6 seed. There's also a chance of moving up to 5 if Denver beats North Dakota in the NCHC final.

If we remain between 7-10, we are likely paired up in brackets with either BU or BC, which means we'd very likely be staying east in either Providence or Springfield.

If we win the ECAC Tourney and get the 6-seed, we probably go west and are likely in Sioux Falls or in Missouri.

Call me crazy, but I think I'd rather the 7 seed. The 7 seed means a likely rematch in Providence /Springfield against Michigan in the first round. We played both BC and BU tough this year so if we get past Michigan, that's not a terrible scenario.

Providence and Springfield. Not Manchester. Just an FYI.

With how often they're in Manchester, I figured I had like a 50-50 shot of being right. LOL. Manchester, Providence, the point remains. Would very much prefer to stay east in the 7-10 area.

Well, then just don't win the ECAC Tournament. Shouldn't be much of a problem for you guys, based on past experience :)
