Quinnipiac Bobcats 2023-24 Regular Season - Embrace the grind

Fillion missed the open net in the 3rd.

Great game. Great season. Nothing to be ashamed of.

I think we defended our championship well.

Yes, QU defended its championship valiantly. I thought they were the better team today overall, but Fillion somehow missing that open net gave BC the opening they needed and they took advantage by scoring on about their only legit scoring opportunity in the 3rd period. OT was just one of those plays that can happen in OT.

My goodness noooo. “You either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain.” Quillan with the empty net miss of the century in the 3rd and the beauty, tape to tape assist in overtime. How painful. And who was it that didn’t get the puck deep on BC’s 4th goal… was it Graf? I’ll forever be grateful for the joy those two brought, but you hate to see a lazy play (goal 4) followed by simply of the worst hockey play you’ll ever see (OT goal) to send you home for the year. That last play was up there with the BU goalie who threw the puck is his own net during the title game against Providence.

as an aside… it gets a bit farcical when the refs start making such soft calls as they did in the 2nd. Leonard is a great player, but my goodness with the theatrics.

at least it’s not this bad… https://youtu.be/ZoyHUVWdHLw?si=TiWDtvkjPKXQ7iHc
Dr. Bob,

Western Michigan Fan here. When they called the penalty that gave BC a PP for their 3rd goal to tie I had to check to see where the refs were from. Whattya know! The NCHC refs we see every week during the season…….welcome to our world. They were reviewing it for a 5 and we didn’t even think it merited a 2.

i was rooting for you to get to the FF. Congrats on a very good season. I’d like to us schedule you. Similar styles would be great games.

I was not happy as a BC fan to see Quinnipiac in the same regional. I figured this clash was inevitable and I knew that QU would be a tough out. They were that and then some. Not a team that you want to see on your dance card this time of year. Congrats on another great year and a stellar battle today.

Lol. I like being called “Dr. Bob”. Always thought the play on words of Dr. Robert Katz aka Dr. Bobcats was some of my best work.

Heck yeah, Im ready for a trip to Kalamazoo, I spent a month there one weekend while I was making my way to Wrigley for a concert. Took a Greyhound from the Kalamazoo station to Chicago. I was trying to hunt down Danny DeKeyser to try to get him to play in Hamden with that final year of eligibility, but he decided to play for some professional team nearby (that deKeyser story is a joke…) tough way for Western to end the season. Sorry you have to deal with such abhorrent reffing every weekend.

The original call never gets waved off (and it probably was a penalty) but I'm sure the reason there wasn't more was the fact that Graf actually played the puck first. The hit was shoulder to chest and Leonard sold it.

Come on now. He didnt clutch his head or roll around on the ice, not sure where the "sell" job is.
He got leveled from the blind side and never saw it coming, of course he's gonna go flying. Don't think it was a penalty but at full speed you can understand how the official initially thought it was. They can't repeal a penalty on review.
And the officials acknowledged it by calling that "crosscheck" immediately after. Hate to see those mistakes and then makeup calls, but it is what it is.

Good season. This is a special BC team this year and yall gave them everything they could handle.

Such a disappointing way to give up the 4th goal with the inability to get the puck deep, then BC immediately brings it down and scores. And the OT goal is so disappointing, too. But I was so impressed with Vinny these last two games. The goaltending was fantastic. He made a number if incredible saves the last two games.

Ultimately, it's hard to be upset. We really weren't as good this year as last, and for most of the season this felt about as far as we should get. So proud of the fight to play that well against the undisputed best team in the country. We were so close to pulling off a shocking upset. Nothing to be ashamed of. I'm rooting for BC the rest of the way. They are the real deal.

Defended our title more than admirably, and that's really all you can ask for. Repeating is virtually impossible in hockey, and to come this close is incredibly impressive. This program has become a true force in college hockey. Proud of the players, the coaching staff, and the administration that allows it to be possible. Any time you make it to the last weekend in March, you're doing something right.

Go Bobcats!

I have a lot of respect for the program you guys have and definitely didn’t want you in our regional. BC was 2nd best most of the game today.

Hopefully we play again in October.

This was an interesting year. Think I had higher hopes during the season, while it felt like we were underperforming. Never felt like we would really have a shot come the NCAAs, then throw in the loss to SLU and I was preparing for a Wisconsin loss. But the boys turned it around, beat a solid Wisconsin (ex Minn St team) squad that had some high level talent sprinkled in. I still thought BC would mop the floor but man was I wrong. Thought we genuinely outplayed them in even strength. Their PP was fantastic and there were some penalties we took that were weak and stupid plays. So it goes, the refs gave us one back that we scored on. Were the refs good? No, but think it broke fairly in the end from that standpoint. But I was really proud of the effort today, think we continue to show that we can be the model of consistency for a non blue blood. Congrats to BC, I think they run through Michigan and BU to the championship. It will hurt to know we had them and let it slip away.

Next year will be interesting. Figure we lose Quillan/Graf/Lipkin (honestly think Lipkin should stay). Got to replace some D men (thank you to Lee and McGee) and goalie (Vinny you were fantastic in the first today). How active are we in the transfer market (good to see movement already) and is Martinov have the trust of Rand or does he bring someone in? Also does Dumais return or take a head coaching job (can only remember Princeton/Miami/Lindenwood being open) or does an NHL team grab Rand (feel like this inevitably happens at some point in the next 4/5 years). If Dumais continues to stay, it feels like Rand has verbalized he’d jump if given the opportunity. Lots of questions. Next year may be a mini rebuilding year with some good pieces that should keep us in the hunt for the Cleary and a NCAA berth.

Go Bobcats

Really great game between two great teams. Sometimes you get the breaks in overtime and sometimes you don’t. That’s hockey. Going to be an interesting couple of weeks with the portal fully open.

If you were at the bus/train station you were 2 blocks away from the site of our proposed new arena. A private donor is providing $360 million for a multi purpose arena that will house WMU hockey and basketball along with the Kalamazoo Wings. Possibly by 2027.

I'm sure Michigan and Michigan state felt the same way.

I thought the OT goal should never have happened. Either your goalie freezes the puck or Tellier gives it a good whack to drive it to the boards instead of trying to stickhandle out from the crease. I get that he didn't see Malone but it's OT and the next goal wins. Can't take any chances.

I think you guys gave BC their most difficult game of the tournament and they won't be pushed as hard the rest of the way.

Great post. Came here to say the same. This team gave us another great year. Vinny was never Perets but he played lights out. We have been so lucky to have great goaltending over the years. Kudos to the players & coaching staff. They have built a program to be proud of and I can't wait for next season.

Funny I was saying the same things to BC fans around me but we lucked out. Getting the puck in deep when BC often makes that questionable cross ice pass and it gets intercepted and BC ends up not getting a shot on net on a number of plays.

There's no such thing as a bad shot when you know the next goal could be the game winner or tieing goal. Until the tieing goal I was almost resigned to the fact that the run was ending as the Q really frustrated BC and outplayed BC for good parts of the game.
