Quinnipiac Bobcats 2022-23: The Quest Continues...

Heck of an effort by the boys. A tad too defensive minded for my liking but the two stars of the show were Yani and Metsa. I mean Metsa was elite, so calm and made the right plays. Yani was who we all know him to be, but many nationally questioned. He is positionally excellent, and can make the Grade A saves he needs to when the defense makes a mistake.

It wasn’t our best hockey, but we played how we needed to, to counteract Ohio St and the 3rd line came up big. Also great to see Brind’Amour get rewarded for all his hard work. This team isn’t who they are without him, he does all the little things that remind you constantly he is a coaches son.

I booked my hotel in Tampa opening night when we kicked the sh** out of BC. Think I may skip the semi and make the trip if we play Sat, but who knows, maybe see ya next Thursday. Go Bobcats! (Fred Davenport you better be in Tampa).

Magical! They got the job done even after giving OSU the 2nd period. But they hung strong and did the job. Yanni was stellar.

Tampa here we come!

Great game tonight. Got nervous in the second but as has happened all year they came through in the 3rd for a big win. Wish I could get to Tampa but will defiantly be watching. We were sitting next to the QU student section and I have to say they were highly entertaining.

Frozen Four Bound! I know the Elynah fans are really loving this! Haha.

We have the 8:30 semi-final game on Thursday vs. Michigan. Rematch of last year's regional final in Allentown. Should be a good one! Go Q!

Incredible. Just incredible. Ohio State's skaters were far better than our skaters, but our goalie. Oh man, our goalie. Sensational.

There's a trend in hockey analysis where people will say "Ohio State outplayed Quinnipiac" -- and while they skated circles around us at times, the goaltender is part of the team -- part of our gameplan tonight was to keep them to the outside, force them into bad-angle long shots, and trust Perets. He made a few great saves, but not nearly as many as the shot counter would suggest. There was one shot in the third period that looked like it was ticketed, but he kicked out the pad and sent it into the corner. Just outstanding rebound control. And OSU's goalie left a couple of big rebounds for us. That's the game. In one-goal games like this one, it's often the goalie who wins it.

They apparently listed only 4,500 fans for both games -- there's no way. Our rink is much smaller than that and averages 4,000/game. There's no way the building was only 40% full. Not sure which fans aren't being counted, but it felt more like 6-7,000. And what an atmosphere. Definitely befitting of the moment.

Quinnipiac didn't play their best today, but the goalie was outstanding. So proud of this team for getting back to the Frozen 4. The Bluebloods and the Bobcats. Let's go.

I see it pretty much the same way you do. The Bobcats as usual kept their cool and did not allow many grade A scoring chances. Perets was the best player on the ice for either team but he did not have to stand on his head and win the game by himself. I was with 3 other people at the game (2 neutral who just like hockey and an Ohio State fan) and we all saw it the same way.

As for attendance, 4,500 makes no sense. It had to be more. The middle sections were 85 to 90% full and the ends were at least half full. And the suites upstairs looked like the were all occupied.

I'm a simple hockey fan... at the end of the game all that matters is what the scoreboard reads. This is playoff hockey. It doesn't matter how you do it, just that you get it done. We got it done.

OSU was super talented and very good. It came down to what Rand calls Buy in and heart. QU just wanted it MORE and they went out and got it. Very proud of that team today. We’ll deserved win. 1000% heart and guts.

Just wanted to congratulate QU and the fans on a solid weekend. Your team earned its way and I think put any doubters to rest about their quality. While some teams may have more top end talent, I don't think any of the four teams left plays to their strengths as effectively as QU. Good luck vs. Michigan

Congratulations to Quinnipiac. Nice to see an ECAC team push through after 'Gate and Harvard blowouts. Q is always a good defensive team, a legit difference maker in the playoffs.

Have to mention big break at a pivotal moment--the Lipkin cross-check was a five-minute major all season long in the ECAC. Can't understand why the review did not lead to a 5 minute major--what am I missing? https://twitter.com/TeamECH/status/1640114084803747840?s=20

I wouldn't call Ohio State super talented by any means. They have some nice players. They are physical. They play hard and get pucks on goal. They don't have half the talent Michigan does.

No doubt that Ohio State and Michigan have different talent levels. Michigan is much more talented and will have more players with long and high end NHL careers. No one on Ohio State will approach what Fantilli, Hughes, Samoskevich, and others will become in the NHL. But Ohio State is older, bigger, and stronger. They gave Michigan fits most of this season, using some of the same strengths that QU has. QU is the underdog but probably learned from last year. This game can go either way.

Full disclosure - I have one son who is a QU alum, and another who is a Michigan alum. I follow both teams. I might be the only person who is a fan of both! Either way it goes, one of my teams is going to the championship game and the other is going home next Thursday. I was in Allentown for the regional final last year, on some levels it was not fun; and I suspect it will be the same for me this time!!

By the book, should’ve been a 5 min. Unbiasedly (maybe not possible), it wasn’t much more than a shove and didn’t feel like a 5 min. I get Ohio St being upset about it, I would’ve wanted 5 in their shoes. The embellishment could’ve been called later on the separate play. Thought the refs let both teams play a bit, but then everyone would’ve said they were ticky tack and making it the rev show. Tough line to walk, in the 3rd period we were no doubt the benefactors of them letting them play.

Seen a lot of people saying we got “badly outplayed” or “dominated” which was just not the case. Did Ohio St control much of the 2nd, yes, but did Rand very clearly alter the game plan based on the lead after the 1st…without a doubt. Pack it in, let them shoot from the outside and trust Perets. Was it pretty? No. Was it effective? Absolutely. Survive and advance anyway you can. Credit to Rand, Dumais and Mike Corbett for knowing the right buttons to push and the boys for execution.

Michigan will certainly be the best team we have played to date. We already lost the skill battle, so we must execute well and limit mistakes, especially clear breakaways. This is what the seniors came back for. A shot at Michigan in Tampa, to play for all the marbles.

Ok now for my feels, it should not be lost on us how privileged we are for where this program has come from and that Rand chooses to stay. This is unique in many ways. Yes it was Tampa or bust from the jump this year, but that in itself is amazing. Very proud to be a Bobcat.

Excellent post. UNH fan here, but rooting for the Q all the way to a NC, despite meaning yet one more team will have leapfrogged the Cats. See my post in UNH thread.

Definitely surprised, the way the college game is called, that this wasn't a 5. Live in the arena I thought they were going to upgrade it. Was pretty surprised and relieved when they didn't.

To BigAl's point -- I was a student at QU from 2004-2008. My freshman year was their last year in Atlantic Hockey, when their season ended in a conference championship loss to Mercyhurst in OT. I was at the Hartford Civic Center for their win against Harvard in their first game in ECAC and the following night when Dartmouth got overwhelmed at the Northford Ice Pavilion. I remember Jack McDonald, the former Athletic Director, saying they had a 12-year plan for QU to get towards the top of the ECAC, only for them to reach the league championship in their second season. I've been there since the start of this magical transformation, and have followed them religiously now for nearly 20 years.

I remember the first time we earned a No. 1 national ranking, and the buzz that went through the alumni base. I remember that win against BC in the Frozen Four, and one of the worst losses of my sports fandom in Pittsburgh. I remember all of it. For those of us who have been around since the first days in the new rink, this continues to be the most incredible program build. I am absolutely blown away that we are going to our third Frozen Four. I'm blown away that we are a contender for a national title. The respect this program is generating. It's a credit to Jack, to Rand, to the administration, to the fans, to everyone. It's remarkable. Simply remarkable.

This program is special. It's run the right way by good people, and it's just special. This whole thing is special. I'm so proud to be a Quinnipiac alum and a fan of this program.

Due to a work event in NH last week, I was able to attend both the Manchester and Bridgeport regional semis. BU definitely was the best team in that group. Cornell surprised me since they were faster than Denver. Sat in the QU section in Bridgeport and had a great time. Based on what I saw, it was like Denver and Harvard just didn't want to be there.

Still trying to decide if I can make the Frozen Four. Work may interfere but need to decide soon. If we are going to win it all, we need a little revenge for last year.
