Quinnipiac Bobcats 2019 ~ 2020 Season

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2019 ~ 2020 Season

Tonight should be a very exciting game. Any chance of a Q preview for those of us who only see them 2x?

Relative to last year this year's Cornell squad is a lot younger (skating 8 freshmen regularly). Our 3 freshmen on D (Malinski, Mitchell, Dirven) are all very solid. There's very little, perhaps no, step down from last year's defensive talent so that is a huge relief.

Up front we are rolling four good lines so far. There's some strong firepower but nobody is out of this world except Barron who already belongs in the N. The weakness is the kill which has been weak. OTOH our pp is > 40% and that's not from fluke shooting; if anything so far we've been unlucky.

We continue our trend of the last five years of getting faster and more skilled. We match up very well even strength and are getting the lion's share of puck possession. We are definitely more aggressive than past years: the D jump up on the play and the general idea seems to be "60 minutes of hell" and just wear the opponent down to where they begin to make errors. In all but one of our games so far there has been an interval in which the opponent broke and we simply blew them out over a 5-10 minute span and iced the game. The exception was Clarkson, as you'd expect from a good team with good coaching. I assume the Q game will be very similar -- Pecknold won't let things get out of hand and will probably try to tighten the screws all around. We do give up rushes on the counter because of all the aggressiveness so we have vulnerability there.

It's a really good looking team so far (SSS). Obviously beatable since everybody is, and as mentioned Q has had our number for the last few years. I want to see us jump up early and then play our game.

QUAlum2004 did a preview of the season on his blog here: https://www.bobcatshockeyblog.com/2019/10/2019-2020-quinnipiac-bobcats-mens-ice.html

now that we are a few games in, one noteworthy difference that represents a change from his article would be some of the D we thought would see ice time have not (boudreau, chorney)

Petruzzelli getting the starts at goalie - has had some rocky games and some good ones - still looking for consistency. alex whelan was out for a bit with an injury but i feel will now hit his stride. tufto putting up a lot of points, but mostly assists. now that he has first goal out of the way, i expect another 40+ point season. bongiovanni i think is most improved on the roster (and he was good last year).

cukste and deliberatore good on the back end, but we lack some depth. we also seem to be giving up the first goal, which sometimes rattles petruzelli.

bottom line is we are very young (22 freshman/sophomores), so mistakes will be made. they have skated hard for the most part. this team could beat the #1 pwr team and lose to the #60 team and i wouldnt be too surprised. january-march if we gel, i would not want to face us if the young'n's continue to develop

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2019 ~ 2020 Season

Great thread read today from everyone, thanks. Maybe it has something to do with us not being able to make the trip, but I really have no expectations for tonight's matchup. Its not that i'm accepting defeat, but i really just want to see how they match up against an elite team. I didn't think the Harvard score reflected their play. So seeing them again, against a top team, I'm really just looking to see 'where they are". That being said, my wife will be yelling at the TV before the first TV timeout! :) Let's GO BOBCATS!

I'd expect nothing less! :D

I would be OK with the loss, but Falhstrom had horrible night:

1) screened KP on the 1st Cornell goal
2) Penalty gave PP goal to Cornell 2nd goal
3) DQ penalty nullified Q PP (Is he out for 1 game?)

The Cornell skater ran into Fahlstrom, who did what we all might have done, protect our face and raise our stick to block the impact...I did not think it was a penalty.

0/5 PP team lacks confidence, they don't know each other well enough yet . . but they had shot at winning this game. a good hockey match, start to finish. Promising.

(Is he out for 1 game?)
It was a misconduct, not a DQ, so he won't miss a game.

I did not think it was a penalty.
Nor did I, especially after the no-call on the hit against Tufto.

The power play, or specifically the lack of one, cost us this game. Cornell was good (I think Harvard is better), but we skated with them and had some chances. KP was good again and kept the game close but our offense couldn't produce (not to mention the lack of PP scoring).

Still a respectable game to hold the #2 team to a 2-1 score, but if we don't start producing on the man advantage there will be more games like this.

Did I mention we need a power play?

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2019 ~ 2020 Season

Solid game for both teams, and both goalies were very good. Cornell’s least impressive game of the season, but QU’s solid defensive play had something to do with that. As far as your power play, it seemed that Q had pretty good puck movement but seemed hesitant to pull the trigger. When the Cornell PK is going well, they take away the shooting lanes and tonight they did a good job at that.

Based on what I saw tonight QU will be a handful for anyone they play. Not sure how they lost two to ASU or got steamrolled by Harvard, but Cornell will see how they measure up to Harvard in a few weeks.

They definitely need to shoot more instead of waiting for that perfect shot.

I chased both dogs out of the room screaming "shoot!"...

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2019 ~ 2020 Season

Q was great in the neutral zone. Petruzzelli played a terrific game. FWIW I thought the 5 should have been called a minor when it happened; I'd not have called it a major.

Cornell was frustrated all night and that speaks well of Q. This was also the first game in what feels like the last 100 where our opponent had more blocked shots, another Pecknold specialty.

You'll be fine come March which is what matters. Good luck until then.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2019 ~ 2020 Season

Really solid performance tonight -- probably our best game of the season. Petruzzelli looks so much better the last few games, and he was immense tonight. Finishing was an issue and made for a frustrating result, but the process was there. That Cornell team is really good, a national title contender. To play them that close should make this team feel much better about themselves.

That was not a major against Fallstrom in the 3rd period. I'm not even sure it was neck contact, it looked like it was high chest. Either way, no way that's a major. Refs were brutal all night with the constant video reviews and puzzling decisions. Cornell fans were right to be furious a few times.

Games against Cornell are always so fun to watch because the coaches can't stand each other, and it's clear that has filtered down to the players. Hate makes for fun hockey.

Remember when these games used to take 2 hours? Man, those were the days. I know there's TV timeouts now, but these games just feel like they drag sometimes.

That scoreboard they have is new, right? Looks very gaudy and a little out of place at such an old and storied building. Best wishes to Cornell the rest of the way, too.

Don't even get me started on that monstrosity.

Good game on both sides. A bit chippy like always but solid match up.

Good luck with rest of the season.

We all hate the scoreboard. Don't be surprised if our EE's "enhance" it at some point.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2019 ~ 2020 Season

Can’t really be too disappointed with that game. Though the PP and Shot selection in general needs to improve.

The NCAA needs to change that replay rule and allow the refs to call a minor. There was a similar play in either the ASU or UMD game in Allentown and the refs didn’t call a penalty after review. I have no idea what they saw last night? Nobody wants to see anyone hurt but, I think they used the game MC as justification for their major call. In the end, not sure it made a difference, the PP is anemic.

Cam Boudreau is no longer with the program. Played for Sioux Falls last night in the USHL.

Good for him. He’s young and I’m happy he’s playing. Hopefully he gets another shot somewhere, if that’s what he wants to do. Whatever the circumstances of him leaving were, I wish him the best.

It's great to have replays. It was funny watching on ESPN+ to hear the oo's and aah's at the replays as we were seeing them on the stream. Also your announcers are really good -- Whittemore did like a 30-second apology after the second period when he realized he was mispronouncing a Quinnipiac player's name, and Topher Scott is one of the best analysts I've heard on an ECAC broadcast.

We have been fortunate with our announcers over the years.

I don't know what to do about the replays. We don't want to become baseball but "intent to injure" stuff has to be punished. The "can't review and call a minor" is well-intentioned but it has perverse consequences.

On these specific two calls, I'd have called them each minors on the ice if I saw them, and I'd have let them each go rather than give them 5 after replay. They both look bad at first but on replay you can see it's more happenstance than premeditation. The refs don't explain to us but my best defense for their choices would be (1) on the boards hit the player put himself into harm's way by reaching so far, and (2) on the throat check, even though it was unfortunate, a player is always responsible for his stick.

Tonight, the Offense was painful to watch. These guys are all great players compared to me, so I cannot criticize them, just wish Rand and Joe (where is Bill Riga, by the way!?) good luck this year....have a feeling it is going to more nights like tonight, but I'll take a rebuilding year, which it will become in few more weekends like this.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2019 ~ 2020 Season

This game was painful. The defense is starting to play better but the offense looks like a disaster right now.
