Quinnipiac Bobcats 2017-18: Chase the dream...

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2017-18: Chase the dream...

I hate ties... but they seemed to play well after a sluggish start. Both teams were very tentative in the first. Things opened up a little in the second and Alex Whelan sniped them to the lead. Things were looking good with the Bobcats in control until a stupid too many men penalty late in the third.

While it wasn't terrible, they left one on the ice. 0-fer on the PP didn't help. Time to regroup and come back home for the opener on Sunday.

PP looks to be a problem I fear. Defense looked good and Shortbridge did his part and more. I really like our goalie tandem. I know we haven't seen Petruzzelli actually play in a meaningful game but I feel like we have a shot with these two in net. I'd go with Shortbridge again on Sunday

I agree. PP will be the difference between an okay season and a great one. Hopefully they will fix that soon. I think they are 0-12 (?) including the exhibition game. That wouldn't be as horrible if they were consistently getting setup and getting shots off.
I'm not sure of the stat on how many SOG they have had during those PP's, but I don't think it is great.
They seem to have got a handle on the face offs, which was the other problem from last week. That's good :)

I think they played as well as we can expect for the first regular season game. Defense looked great, goal tending was outstanding and I think the offense will come along as time goes on.
BC was a great match up for the first game. I hate the tie, especially loosing the win because of a too many men penalty, but I will take it over a loss any day.

They will need to up their game tomorrow for sure. They played well yesterday with a few mistakes. I have a feeling those mistakes would loose them a game against a very talented BU team.

What I hope to see tomorrow is at least 1 PP goal, the same level of goal tenting and cleaning things up overall.

The PP does need work but I think we need to factor in the probability that the PP units aren't yet set in stone. Rand will tweak things and I'm sure things will improve.

Thinking about it, I am concerned about the slow starts. We witnessed a lot of that last season as well. Last week they were very sluggish at the start of the game. Same thing last night. Almost like they're feeling out the competition. I say go for it right off the opening drop. Take control early and establish your game. Hopefully that will improve in short order as well.

The game notes have been changed to say today's game will be on ESPN3.

Apparently all our home games will be on ESPN3 this season, which is very good news.

LIVE ON ESPN3
All of Quinnipiac's home games will be featured on ESPN3 through the 2017-18 season, with Bill Schweizer providing the play-by-play and Rich Coppola with the color commentary.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2017-18: Chase the dream...

Unfortunate way for it to end. Think BU was the better team. Harper was a one man wrecking crew. Petruzzelli kept us in it. Puck possession through the first two games is something to worry about. Whelan looks ready to lead the offense but we will need much more than that. Which brings up the point I made after our loss to NoDak in Tampa, we need more high end offensive guys. You could tell BU was loaded with draft picks and we had none on offense (note: Rand spoke about wanting more NHL draft picks in his presser).

From where I sit, after two games, we look to be able to compete for an ECAC championship (will be tough to take out Harvard but possible) but wont be able to be an elite team with some talent restraints offensively. Defense/goaltending will allow us to compete on a nightly basis but the offense will need to step up to win games.

Not a bad opening weekend considering the opponents. We won't see a better team than BU all year IMO.

Heartbreaker today. We skated with BU all afternoon. Petruzzelli kept us in it and I'm not sure any of the 3 goals were his fault. PP still needs work and the offense needs to come together. Tough loss at home but they need to learn from it and move on.

Good news, bad news. I'm hearing that there will not be any WQUN broadcasts of home games. Not sure what the thinking is behind that...

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2017-18: Chase the dream...

Really liked what I saw from Petruzzelli. His positioning makes really tough saves look easy. The kid is an elite-level goalie at this level, it's easy to see why he's such a high draft pick.

The offense is a major concern. Landon Smith needs to get going, but even with him we don't have nearly enough weapons offensively. We have a lot of nice pieces offensively -- a bunch of solid 2nd and 3rd liners, but we don't have nearly enough talent on the top line. That's going to be a major concern. Defense looks good -- really like what Fortunado brought, but I just hope we can get some more guys to contribute offensively.

I've always wondered what the listenership is for those broadcasts -- obviously online I"m sure it's high, but I can't imagine many people are listening on terrestrial radio. If that's the case, it doesn't make sense to have radio broadcasts for an online audience when your top broadcasters are doing the game on such a widely-distributed platform like ESPN3. It probably becomes cost-prohibitive when (I assume) it's a little pricey to do ESPN3 broadcasts.

The only thing terrestrial radio is for is to get the interview with Pecknold while you're driving down the hill, and since those are posted online pretty quickly after a game, that's not even a big deal anymore.

The thinking from what I heard is they are doing ESPN3 for all home games for MH, WH, MBB, WBB but all road games are WQUN. I think its a mistake in that there are those that maybe can't watch the game but like to still listen via WQUN.

Defense and goaltending are going to need to win this team a lot of games until they can get the offense going. This goes back to needing to win recruiting battles for high end top line players.

Little goalie news, Treuhl and Hartzell released to unknown.
