Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2017-18: Chase the dream...
Happy Thanksgiving to all of Bobcat Nation!
Happy Thanksgiving to all of Bobcat Nation!
I haven't ruled it out but not sure. I do want to get back there to see the new rink.Same to you Mark, you coming to Hamilton in early January ??
They certainly need to beat the teams below them. On paper, we're a better team than UMass. Of course, that means nothing when the puck drops. They've got to play their game.I feel like this weekend for QU is a must sweep.
I had no idea you could call a penalty because a kid gets injured. That's a new one. Ridiculous call on Duane. That's a good hockey hit right there. Not a minor and CERTAINLY not a major. I hope the kid's OK, but that was a full-body hit and in no way a head-shot. Embarrassing, as usual, from ECAC refs, and Rand was right.
It almost looked like UMass talked them into the penalty. Puck was placed at the dot outside the blue line. UMass was chirping and then the penalty was called. No hand went up on the play and play appeared to be stopped for an injured player not a penalty.
Aside from that, Duane wins his share of face offs and he’s a big body, but he slows down Jermain and Aldworth, can’t handle the puck, turns it over and takes bad penalties. Is it maybe time to give someone else some ice time?
That's the way I saw it as well. I didn't see the hit but there were no hands in the air. Rand spent several minutes after the game speaking with Feola. It almost looked like UMass talked them into the penalty. Puck was placed at the dot outside the blue line. Duane has certainly picked up his game this season but the past 2-3 weeks he's been extremely selfish with the puck. He needs to dish it off to his linemates.Aside from that, Duane wins his share of face offs and he’s a big body, but he slows down Jermain and Aldworth, can’t handle the puck, turns it over and takes bad penalties. They had the effort tonight but still some sloppy play and not finishing did them in. The last couple of minutes with Shortridge pulled were certainly exciting. I can't figure out how we didn't score there.
Tomorrow becomes a must win. No way they can afford to be swept by UMass. A win doesn't really help them but a loss could be catastrophic later in the season as the pairwise becomes relevant.

In other news, our finishing issues continue. Not sure whether that can be coached, and not sure whether it can be fixed in-season. As Rich Coppola said at some point, there's no Sam Anas on this year's team. No game-breakers.
That's why I say tomorrow is a must win. What I meant about the PWR is that it's fluid. Lots of things affect it but the only control you have over it is to win.To me the pairwise is already relevant. They are playing themselves right out of any at-large chances at the moment.

Problem with Quinnipiac is their strength of schedule stinks. Their best OOC win is Northeastern and they are sitting at 17 right now. The remaining OOC games are against the likes of UMass, UConn, 2 against Maine and 2 against Arizona State. None of those games help strength of schedule. They really need to up there SOS and start going out to the elite teams in the west instead of playing some of the Hockey East bottom feeders.
Clarkson 2x , Harvard 2x, Cornell and Colgate will help pairwise. Team needs maturity to understand down 1 goal is not end of world. ECAC refs seem to be focused on Q for bad calls, last week vs Yale and last night vs UMass a joke.Q will rebound strong tonight all part of the maturation of group! Go Q!!

A couple of things...Quinnipiac's OOC schedule is a killer with so many Hockey East bottom feeders.
A couple of things...
First, like recruiting, scheduling can occur 2-3 years out so it's not always easy to determine who will be weak or strong. Who could have predicted that BU and BC would have terrible starts to their seasons? Second, Rand has said a few times at the banquet that many of the western teams simply won't do reciprocal agreements... they want us to go there but don't want to come here. I think he's right in thinking we're worthy of hosting D-I powers in our barn and shouldn't settle for always being on the road. Much like BU and BC, it can take time to get the bigger fish.
Regardless of SOS, we need to win the games we're supposed to win, and steal a few that we aren't. Losing to lower (PWR) teams hurts way more than beating them helps. Win the games you're supposed to and the numbers sort of take care of themselves.
On the road to Amherst tonight. A short trip with big implications. With all the PWR talk, a loss tonight could be then end of hoping to qualify for the NCAA's on numbers alone. They need to find the same fire they had last weekend. The difference between last night and last week was in the way they took advantage of their chances. Need more rubber on net and more bodies in front. Show no mercy and take no prisoners.
