Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 2015-16 - Another journey begins...

As many of you young bucks might not be aware of, I ran and operated QU Hockey Blog for 4 years, ending in July of 2013. Just over four years ago I along with the help of local media and some devout Bobcat fans (15 voters total), compiled a list of the top 20 Bobcats from 2000-2010. The list is strong with some Bobcats that will without a doubt withstand the test of time. But I was curious, what recently departed Bobcats would join the list of all time bests. Some are obvious like Eric Hartzell or Matthew Peca. Others open up the conversation. So I’m doing just that. Below is the Top 20. I've included a link to each players "release day" bio. Each day I would release a new player in a countdown. Some of you new bloods should go back and read up. History is a beautiful thing. I think a big component when comparing would have to be the level of play current Bobcats face vs. Bobcats back in the day. Either way, you can’t deny some of the program’s pioneers a spot on this list. So, have at it. Make your list of your Top 20 players from 2000-2015. Make a list of your Top 10 from 2010-2015. Maybe just mention what players you think would be shoe ins on this list.

QU Hockey Blog's Top 20 Bobcats (2000-2010)

1) Reid Cashman (2003-2007)
2) Brandon Wong (2006-2010)

5) Bryan Leitch (2005-2009)
6) Jamie Bates (2004-2008)

Do we not need to really be on TV anymore?

they bought the airtime to broadcast their games
C'mon wonger... you're great at stats but did this just slip your mind? ;)

Remember, over the past 4 or 5 yrs, Q did, in fact, buy the airtime for those televised games in order to "promote the brand". Can you say Bobcats Unleashed? I'd say a combination of recent success, financial constraints, and the now free online feed likely mean they no longer feel it's necessary..

What baffles me though is why games like this Friday against Harvard, or the December game vs BU aren't being picked up by any of the sports channels. You'd think a battle of top-10's might just sell some commercial time, even for our niche sport.

On the other hand, I hate the TV timeouts so if the Bobcats are gonna get on TV, let it be on the road!

A top-20 is tough...

I think you can add Hartzell, the Jones', and Peca without any afterthought... but who do they replace?

I'll respectfully sit back and watch this unfold because I'm terrible at making objective decisions about my boys! ;)

Of course, if the league itself did a better job of promotion maybe it wouldn't be an issue.

Question for the group and maybe those of you who were once close to the media department while in school... Over the last four seasons we've had 13 regular season games televised, averaging over 3 per year. In 2013-14 alone, we had six games televised including two on SNY and three on NESN. In 2012-13 we had a game aired on NBC Sports Network. This year the only game listed is the 12/4 Yale game on some American Sports Network, whatever the heck that is. I know that Jack McDonald was a major component to getting us national exposure and maybe it's as simple as, with our recent success, exposure isn't something still needed. I also have heard that this new AD Amodio isn't a huge hockey guy. I mean the guy passed up tickets to the Frozen Four when it was in Pitt. On a side note, this dude is going to have to work extremely hard to fill Jack's shoes. First impression of him was a yawner. Wear some Bobcat gold or muted yellow (;)Jack) at the very least. Anywho, I understand that contracts with TV channels and such can be complicated and maybe the whole NESN thing timed out. Maybe this is it. What do you guys think? Do we not need to really be on TV anymore? Is it partly because Jack was hyper aware of exposure and Amodio might be looking forward to bouncy ball season? It doesn't really matter to me, I'm at every home game and even in the McDonald tenure we rarely got a road game on TV, I'm just curious.

I believe it can't be just a 1 sport contract and if that is the case, what other QU sport would anyone want to actually watch. The basketball teams are getting better as years go on but that isn't a national draw. I believe it would be really difficult for just QU to get a contract, but maybe if the ECAC did some joint effort to get the Conference more exposure that might work.

And hell while we are on the topic of TV why the hell have Yale and QU not played outdoors at the Yale Bowl yet?!

You guys are awesome for the support. Make sure you also stop by the SVO table this weekend and talk to the Men and Women who are there. They are a great group of people.

If you don't know, the school has been cash strapped the last two years since the new Law School was built on the North Haven campus. Not exactly the best time to build law schools as nation wide applications have plummented. Bad timing for Q. Thing the school might be doing alittle better this year with a healthy sized freshman class and getting rid of my small graduating class. I think this is why Amodio was hired though. He's a dollar focused guy who wants to increase donations made to the school (something we lack in MASSIVELY). I know that NBCSN raised their rates dramatically after they broadcasted the QU-Yale game two years ago, so that combined with the school's money situation has caused no real broadcasts on TV. The point about the free stream is valid but that only attracts people who are looking for QU hockey.
Tv grabs people who are just flipping through their channels and stumble upon the game.

As for Amodio not being a hockey guy, he has clearly been hired to try to bring basketball up to speed and to increase donations. Let's face it Tom Moore hasn't worked and they are paying him an arm and a leg to not sniff the real postseason (the one you don't pay $40k to play in). I said it when Amodio was hired, Rand Pecknold might be the most powerful hockey coach in D1 hockey because they basically handed him the keys and said do what you want with this much money.

As for the Quinnipiac Top 20 hockey players, Matt Peca has to be in the top three. I have not seen most the people on this list but I think we all agreed at the end of last season he was top 3. Hartzell had one amazing year, Garteig has already passed him career wise in my mind. The Jones are difficult. They changed the program into what it is today. Those guys have to be in the top 10.

I'm thinking Jeremy Langlois would have to be seriously considered a potential top ten guy. Compared to some on that list guys like Zach Davies and Loren Barron and eventually Travis St. Denis would have to be considered too.

In my mind the top 3 are Cashman, Peca, Wong. After that it's way too confusing with some of the talent of the past few seasons.

I just started to re-watch the Cornell game, and I am really disappointed with the Game Misconduct call on Aldworth. I don't feel like that was even that hard of a hit and you can see him let up with his skates well before the hit. Also, the Cornell player leans really awkwardly to play the puck. I agree with a Boarding call but not the Game Misconduct.

Yup... was worthy of 2 but not 5 and a GM. One word: Chip MacDonald!

But it's all water under the bridge. Maybe it woke the team up since they had to really dig deep and overcome the hole that put them in. Time to focus on the games ahead...

Looking forward to seeing three Bobcat games in five days! Procured tix to Uconn/QU at the XL Center and will be accompanied by the Eagle himself. Anyone else on here heading to Hartford Tuesday?

As for this weekend, I'm quite excited to see what Harvard brings. They weren't really challenged by Dartmouth (twice) and Brown and fell victim to a last minute goal against Yale or else their record would be blemish-free as well. I think, granted a small sample size, they're legit. But we shall see.

I think of all the road pairings in the ECAC, home ice matters the most for Harvard/Dartmouth weekend. Home teams have done very well in Q's matchups with these teams since the opening of the Bank. In that time, QU is 8-8-4 against Harvard but a more impressive 5-2-2 at home. The splits with Dartmouth are even more telling with the Bobcats pulling a 12-7 overall mark against the Green since 2007 but 10-2 at home. In fact, Q has won their last 6 Hamden meetings with Dartmouth with the Green's only regular season win coming back in the Bank's first abbreviated season back in early 2007. Since the opening of the Bank in 2007, the Bobcats have gone 68-38-15 (.623 win %) in conference home games (including playoffs). Below are Q's home conference records since the opening of the Bank.

vs. Dartmouth (10-2, .833%)
vs. Brown (10-2-3, .766%)
vs. Yale (6-1-4, .727%)
vs. Clarkson (6-2-1, .722%)
vs. Harvard (5-2-2, .666%)
vs. Colgate (7-4, .636%)
vs. RPI (4-2-2, .625%)
vs. Union (7-5-1, .576%)
vs. Princeton (5-4, .555%)
vs. Cornell (4-6-1, .409%)
vs. St. Lawrence (2-6-1, .277%)
