Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

So good to see Hartzell playing well! He got an opportunity and made the most of it. Is it fair to say he has taken over the #1 job?

His consistency has been nice considering we lacked consistent goaltending in recent years

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

So I got thinkin about Quinnipiac's 57 game unbeaten streak when leading after two periods and searched high and low but it seems it is such an obscure stat that no one keeps it. So being the stat geek that I am, I did my own research. It took scanning through box scores and every teams schedule but here it is...the "When leading after two periods" stat.

Quinnipiac is 52-0-5 when leading after two periods. The last time they lost when leading after two was rather heartbreaking. The date was March 17th, 2007 in the ECAC Championship game against Clarkson. Given the chances of losing a game when you're merely leading 2-1, 3-2 , 1-0, etc. after two periods the stat seems rather improbable and incredible. So I first decided to do my research within the conference and my theory was confirmed...not one other ECAC team in just the last two years has gone undefeated in games when leading after two and thats only two years. Quinnipiac's last loss came in the 2006-07 season, when Reid Cashman and Drew Bagnall were both considered ECACers to be gracing the blue line in the NHL in the near future. That was a long time ago.

Here are the ECAC team's records when leading after two over the last two seasons (09-10, 10-11). Mind you the records are impressive but no one other than the Q came away unscathed.

Princeton 16-3-2
Yale 26-1
Dartmouth 11-3-2
Clarkson 13-3-1
Union 19-3-3
RPI 21-5-2
St. Lawrence 14-2-6
Brown 13-1-2
Cornell 18-3-2
Harvard 8-2-1
Colgate 10-5-2

Aside from Harvard only leading 11 games into the third period over a two year span which is rather lackluster, the league's teams have lost a total of 31 times when leading into the third. Quinnipiac has gone 57 games and 4 seasons since the last time they've lost. It is rather staggering when you really look at the numbers.

Nationally, there are teams who have gone undefeated the last couple seasons but no one touches Quinnipiac's mark. Here are the next top ten teams in terms of when they last lost a game when leading going into the third.

10. Denver 2/28/09
9. Wisconsin 2/27/09
8. Uconn 2/20/09
7. Canisius 1/25/09
6. Umass 1/10/09
5. Alaska 1/2/09
4. Merrimack 12/29/08 (ironically enough to QU)
3. New Hampshire 3/21/08
2. Alaska Anchorage 3/15/08
1. Bemidji State 1/18/08

So if Quinnipiac inevitably because I wrote this loses one that they're leading heading into the third, these are the teams next on the list with a rather long streak.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

So we could be in for a less than stellar turnout tonight with the weather and lack of students due to break but let's hope that doesn't adversely affect the Bobcats' play which has been pretty on point of late. USCHO users have us as the overwhelming favorite tonight (32 Q votes to 4 'Gate votes) and a slight underdog tomorrow (16 Q votes to 20 Cornell votes). I like our chances in both games given how we've played in the last three. Hartzie needs to continue his brilliance in net and we need to get on the board first. I'll go with a 4-2 W tonight and a 2-1 W tomorrow! Go Q!

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

I fear the crowd will be sparse tonight making for a quiet Bank.

The one thing they cannot do tonight is look past 'Gate. They need to come out and play their game and take it to the Red Raiders. They've proven they can do it and they need to continue building on all the momentum from last week. I'll take Q 5-2 tonight.

Go Q!

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

So I got thinkin about /QUOTE]

Aww, I remember the days when I had that kind of time.

Nice win tonight. If QU has a strong second half of the season (IF)... it would be the first time in at least a half decade they played well after the new year. Though it's only Jan 7th, so that would be getting ahead of ourselves.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

Nice win tonight.
Everyone on the team ought to take Hartzell out for a steak dinner! That kid was the difference tonight for sure. They played well but Eric was the one responsible for the win! It wasn't a pretty game but they got the job done. Played hard and competed all night.

Considering the weather, the crowd was respectable (the ride to and from not so much). Bring on the Big Red tomorrow...

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

Big Red comes to town tonight after beating Princeton last night. They've struggled this year but can't be taken lightly. I think our offense will wake up tonight and Hartzell will put up another stellar effort. Q wins 4-1.

Go Q!

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

Tough OT loss tonight. A mistake gave Cornell their first and last goals. In between we outplayed them for long stretches and had plenty of chances but their goalie was the difference. For us, Hartzell wasn't bad but didn't look as crisp as he was last night.

Tieing it up with 7 seconds to go was great! The crowd went crazy and you could feel the excitement in the Bank. They had plenty of chances early in OT and had Cornell on their heels. They really played well enough to win but came up short.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

Because I know nothing about Canisius I will say we split. There is no doubt we are the more talented team, but it just seems like a weirdly timed, trap weekend and it may be tough to take both. Any chance Clarkie or Patty McGann see some time in net? These games are relatively meaningless as we are in no position to get an at large berth but they can go miles in terms of confidence if we can sweep heading into the rest of the conference slate. Canisius is only averaging 42% capacity this year at Buffalo State Arena and with the Jets and Pats playing at 4 I'm putting the over/under for attendance at 300. Any takers?

I know even less except for what I just read in the game notes. I'd like to think that our guys go into this game knowing that even meaningless OoC games can have an impact on the rest of the season. They've been playing better of late and really don't have any mulligans left so a road sweep would be a huge morale booster.

I doubt it. If Hartzell has earned the #1 job then he needs to play in order to stay focused. And I heard mention on the post game last weekend that McGann likely will start next week against the US U18 team.

There's a football game this afternoon? ;)

I'll be my optimistic self and take Q 5-2 today.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

A nice offensive display in a 7-3 win over the Griffins! They pressured all game and took advantage of their opportunities. Defense was ok but not stellar. The Griffs first goal was off a rebound that wasn't cleared and the second came on a breakaway. Hartzell didn't seem to have a chance on either. Their 3rd was a PPG on Pat McGann who relieved Hartzy with about 3:30 to go.

Except for the first half of the second period, it looked like we controlled both ends of the ice at will. Blue jersey's were buzzing everywhere. It was nice to see but we must remember that Canisius is not having a very good year. I expect them to come out a completely different team tomorrow so the boys had better be ready.

All in all it was still a good effort and something that they should be able to build upon.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

Another day, another game. While I think Canisius will make adjustments, they just didn't strike me as having enough offensive power. They'll have to be a little tighter on D or else the 'Cats will pounce.

It'll be a closer game but I still like Q 3-1.

Go Q!
