Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11
So I got thinkin about Quinnipiac's 57 game unbeaten streak when leading after two periods and searched high and low but it seems it is such an obscure stat that no one keeps it. So being the stat geek that I am, I did my own research. It took scanning through box scores and every teams schedule but here it is...the "When leading after two periods" stat.
Quinnipiac is 52-0-5 when leading after two periods. The last time they lost when leading after two was rather heartbreaking. The date was March 17th, 2007 in the ECAC Championship game against Clarkson. Given the chances of losing a game when you're merely leading 2-1, 3-2 , 1-0, etc. after two periods the stat seems rather improbable and incredible. So I first decided to do my research within the conference and my theory was confirmed...not one other ECAC team in just the last two years has gone undefeated in games when leading after two and thats only two years. Quinnipiac's last loss came in the 2006-07 season, when Reid Cashman and Drew Bagnall were both considered ECACers to be gracing the blue line in the NHL in the near future. That was a long time ago.
Here are the ECAC team's records when leading after two over the last two seasons (09-10, 10-11). Mind you the records are impressive but no one other than the Q came away unscathed.
Princeton 16-3-2
Yale 26-1
Dartmouth 11-3-2
Clarkson 13-3-1
Union 19-3-3
RPI 21-5-2
St. Lawrence 14-2-6
Brown 13-1-2
Cornell 18-3-2
Harvard 8-2-1
Colgate 10-5-2
Aside from Harvard only leading 11 games into the third period over a two year span which is rather lackluster, the league's teams have lost a total of 31 times when leading into the third. Quinnipiac has gone 57 games and 4 seasons since the last time they've lost. It is rather staggering when you really look at the numbers.
Nationally, there are teams who have gone undefeated the last couple seasons but no one touches Quinnipiac's mark. Here are the next top ten teams in terms of when they last lost a game when leading going into the third.
10. Denver 2/28/09
9. Wisconsin 2/27/09
8. Uconn 2/20/09
7. Canisius 1/25/09
6. Umass 1/10/09
5. Alaska 1/2/09
4. Merrimack 12/29/08 (ironically enough to QU)
3. New Hampshire 3/21/08
2. Alaska Anchorage 3/15/08
1. Bemidji State 1/18/08
So if Quinnipiac inevitably because I wrote this loses one that they're leading heading into the third, these are the teams next on the list with a rather long streak.
