Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

While I do not anticipate a large turnout to tonight's game, I'm hoping the intensity on the ice carries over from the weekend sweep of Dartmouth and Harvard. Princeton has a squad that is putting all the prognosticators to shame. It should be a tough one but also a winnable one. I'll go 3-2 Q win.

Not to mention they always seem to play us tough. I want to believe that the team woke up this weekend and will continue to pour it on. I like the Q 5-3.

Go Q!

Add tonight to that list as well.

Very uninspired play by the Bobcats. Everyone seemed off tonight. They couldn't even score on a 5-min PP. Hopefully they can regroup and get ready for UMass on Saturday.

Ugh.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

How did Hartzell play?
I'm wondering if Rand will continue to play him. Just looking at the stats he had 28 saves on 30 shots in his 1st loss of the year.

Yeah Hartz played fine. Definitely well enough to deserve the win. The first Princeton goal came on an excellent shot from the top of the left circle when Ritchie was left alone to skate right in on Hartz, a total meltdown defensively with Q players chasing the puck rather than staying disciplined and responsible.

The second goal came on the PP with the Princeton skater sniping the puck under the crossbar on a pass that caused Hartz to go post to post with little defensive help in front on the shooter.

Rand's post game quotes in the Register said it best. Basically he said there were 18 skaters on the ice and we were 0 for 18. I'd only amend this to add that Yuri Bouharevich played his heart out for the bulk of the game last night and even though he didn't contribute offensively he showed some serious grit barely missing a shift after taking a hard slapper to his right lower leg. He then went out and took another one to the same leg. He continued to play hard and fast and the first one and to that I give him endless credit. No one with the exception of Hartzell had a good game. Hansen was an abysmal point presence and even seemed to give up on a play and throw his hands up behind the net at one point. Goodie and Zurvy did not seem to be themselves and the Jones' seemed agitated that things weren't going their way. Could ya blame them? The pairing with D'Arcy Oakes has to change, he only slows them down and thwarts their potential on every shift. The team did not seem ready to match Princeton's intensity after the first period, which was evenly played. The third was filled with frustration penalties and undisciplined play. They need to come out with the effort they had over the weekend every game or else this is the result.

Umass got their first win of the year beating Vermont 4-1 last night so that monkey is off their backs. Regardless, we will face a HE opponent on Saturday and a display like last night's will have them licking their chops.

Scouting The Minutemen
UMass is currently 1-6-3 overall and 1-3-3 in Hockey East play. The Minutemen picked up their first victory of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 23 with a 4-1 win against Vermont at home. Michael Pereira leads the Minutemen with seven goals, while he is also tied for the team lead with T. J. Syner with nine points. Syner carries a team-best six assists on the season. Paul Dainton and Jeff Teglia have split the goaltending duties, with Dainton posting a 1-3-2 record with a .912 save percentage and a 3.16 goals-against average. Teglia is 0-3-1 with a .899 save percentage and a 3.37 GAA.

I dont expect a game like last year, perhaps the best college game I have ever seen, but I do hope they pick up the intensity. After two very good games on the weekend, it was a disappointment to see the letdown last night. Buy the way, and not to beat a dead horse, why is it that QU does not look at local (West Haven) players like Michael Pereira, and his brother Joe (BU)?

I hope nobody on the team looks at that 1-6-3 record for UMass and thinks it'll be a walk in the park. It will be a tough game for sure on a larger ice surface than we're used to (200x95). The boys had better be ready to play.

In the meantime, I hope everyone enjoys the holiday. Happy Thanksgiving!

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

Last night was definitely not their best game, but all they can do now is learn from the mistakes they made, enjoy their day off tomorrow and work hard for saturday. I think it will be a tough game, but a winnable game. We can't ignore Umass's record and be ready for their A-game.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

Lost: One hockey team. Last seen about a week ago wearing blue and gold. Reward if found!

Another lackluster performance against a team that could have been beat. Hartzell coughed up a couple of fairly soft goals, Clarke wasn't much better in relief, and the whole team was off most of the night. Lots of stupid penalties and lost battles. The Jones Bros were the only real standouts tonight but they've now resorted to trying to do everything themselves and it shows.

I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt that 4 games in 8 days with a holiday break thrown in was the reason, but they were just as bad tonight as they were Tuesday against Princeton. No heart, no desire... they're not going to win many games playing the way they did in the last two.

About the only good thing about tonight was that it wasn't a league game. The next 3 are so they'd better regroup and come out on fire next weekend against the Saints and Golden Knights.

Hats off to UMass who obviously wanted it more than the Bobcats, and I must say that the Mullins Center was a nice barn even if it was way less than half full.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

I must say that the Mullins Center was a nice barn even if it was way less than half full.

I have been there 3-4 times over the last 11 years and each time they get a decent crowd but it is never full for hockey. If memory serves me correct the Mullins Center was built primarily as a basketball arena back in the day when UConn and UMass had the big rivalry when John Calipari coached there. Obviously since then UConn's b'ball program went in one direction and UMass's program went south.

I can't believe this but I have to plan my schedule better. I just looked at my schedule for next week and I am in Providence, RI next Friday for a meeting that I don't think is going to get over until 5:30-6:00. I can't believe it.....but I am going to be in jeopardy of missing Fridays game or best case getting there very late!!!!

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

A loss against a team that was 1-6-3, even if it is a Hockey East team. Mark hit it right on the head, obviously UMass wanted it more than we did. I didn't get to watch or listen to the game, but from everyone else it certainly doesn't sound good. Was the pulling of Hartzell because of the score or because of injury? Or was Rand trying to send a message to everyone else?

The scheduling gods certainly weren't in our favor this week, four games in eight days is tough when you aren't used to it. Hopefully they can figure out whatever ailing them before St L and Clarkson this weekend.

We'll leave the light on for ya! ;)

No injury that we were aware of, Hartzell just wasn't on his game. Clarke went in at the start the 2nd, so I'm sure there was a message in that. Another message was sent when Rand called a timeout and put all the players on the ice to huddle around (I saw that last week when Donato did it with Harvard).

The scheduling gods certainly weren't in our favor this week, four games in eight days is tough when you aren't used to it.
Well, they'd better used to it since the same thing happens next week: Fri, Sat, Wed (Harvard), Sat (Providence).

I keep trying to convince myself that it's youth and inexperience that are the cause of these letdowns, but I can't. This team is young, yes, but has a boatload of talent. I also keep trying to convince myself that they're getting the bad stuff out of the way early and the better play will come in the second half. With 3 league games before the break, I think it's imperative they take at least 4 points somehow.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

Not only was that a bad week of hockey... but it was a bad week of hockey on NESN. Playing your worst hockey on regional TV is counter productive. ;)

Hopefully basketball will have better success on NESN, starting this Wednesday with the women vs. UVM at The Bank.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

Sorry for the absence but it has taken me this long to get over the frustration that last week's losses brought on. The team has hit a low but has the talent to rebound. However, with a team this young it could be tough and we could be in for some more painful losses. The last two losses were not mirror images of each other, in fact they were quite different. The Princeton loss came even with an excellent effort from Hartz in net. He turned away a ton of shots and only yielded two that he could do nothing about. The Umass loss came from terrible goaltending and the inability to, again, net some goals.

At this point I'm not even sure Rand knows who he will start in net on Friday...Pat McGann? or better yet Jake Whiting? I kid, because with the exception of the Umass game Hartzell has been one of the nation's best and on any given night Clarkie has a shot at pitching a gem. The big problem is the offense. The Harvard game seemed to wake up this stagnant, complacent offense but then they took two steps backwards only scoring 2 goals in 2 games against Princeton and Umass.

Should be an interesting weekend at the Bank to see if they can get their bearings and return to being a tough league out or continue a downward turn that would put them in the basement.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '10-'11

It's not really the midpoint of the season, but I'm bored at work so I thought I'd grade each of our guys through 14 games, a telling sample size.

Connor Jones: A- Connor has been our most consistent player every night and his team leading 10 points is proof of that. It is also very telling that our leading scorer is 4 pts. under being a point a game player but that is another story. His hard, gritty play is rarely seen in a playmaker with as much skill as he has, he and Kellen should be fun to watch for years to come.

Kellen Jones: B+ Speaking of Kellen, he has almost been as consistent as Connor but where this drafted twin falls off is his inability to keep it up every game, the way Connor has. Regardless the twins have been our most impressive, non stop efforts each night and have lived up to expectations.

Mike Dalhuisen: B+ It is incredible that Dalsy has only tallied 1 goal and no assists this year. He is a reliable defenseman, an imposing presence and has really come into his own this year. He has fought injuries but his play has not come into question the way it had last year.

John Dunbar: B Dunbar has been a mainstay in the lineup all year and with a deep young team that is impressive on its own. It isn't reflected on the stat sheet (2 goals, 1 assist) but Dunbar has been in the mix in front of the net all year. He has no problem going into the rough areas and mixing it up despite his size. He seems like a more polished Heichman in terms of offense, but no one can question either of their heart.

Zach Davies: B You seem to not notice Zach Davies on the ice and when it comes to a defenseman, that is usually a good thing. He goes about his job with responsiblity and a maturity far beyond his sophomore experience. He is a defensive defensman and should not be expected to produce much offensively. For what he does, he's one of the best.

Mike Glaicar: B Glaics had that 'A' sewn onto his jersey and has really lived up to that leadership role. A guy who should be wearing a 'C' next year, Glaics has left his cement-footed performances in the past and has done a more than admirable job of securing our blue line. He is also not the constant worry point that he was the last couple of years. His hitting is still a work in progress but as evidence in the Harvard game, it's there.

Eric Hartzell: B Hard to give Hartz a grade lower than this. I just don't have a huge sample size. His only rough outing was Saturday at Umass but his goals against still stands at 1.98 and his save percentage sits at .933. Both incredible impressive stats IF he can keep it up. He gives off way more confidence and security than Clarkie and should see plenty of creasetime for the rest of the season.

Spencer Heichman: B- If I wrote this four games into the season Spence might have gotten an A+. His production has fallen off of late but his grit, heart and never ending physical exertion has always been there. He plays the game the way all small players should and excels because of this. The line of Yuri, Spence and Harvey has been excellent and reliable every night. At the very least they'll give you their all and that's all you can ask for.

Yuri Bouharevich: B- I'd be lying if I said I didn't expect more from Yuri but he has still reached the scoresheet with some consistency. He has also dazzled with his footspeed and offensive touch. Yuri has also shown the fearless ability to drop down and block a shot, a lost art in today's game. He is a throwback and an important piece this year and next year.

Clay Harvey: B- It'd be easy for me to say "see above 2" but Clay's performance has come as kind of a surprise. When I was making my line combinations at the beginning of the year I may have even scratched Harvey. He didn't impress me last year and I didn't expect much of him this year. His play has proved me wrong and I sure hope it continues. Never takes a shift off.

Zach Tolkinen: B- It's hard, again, because of sample size but Tolks seems to be the type of Dman that if he came in another season when we weren't so deep, he might have thrived. He is a victim right now of a deep D-core but has shown, especially on the PP, he has the ability to be very good. He has a blast of a slapper and rarely makes Freshman mistakes. With Hano leaving after this season, I expect Tolkinen to step in and fill his "void" on the PP, impressing us all.

Scott Zurevinski: C+ He leads the team in goals with 5 but 5 goals in 14 games is hardly the production a pro prospect should be showing, especially playing on a line at the beginning of the year with the likes of Kellen and Connor. He has shown at times hard, physical play but then disappeared and seemed to take shifts off from time to time. He may be catering to not getting hurt or playing it safe, but right now with his play the only thing getting hurt are his chances at signing at the next level. Scott is an incredble talent but in order for this team to work, he must work.

Zack Currie: C+ Currie's insertion as a forward has been pretty seamless. He has good speed which he showed off last season on a break away top shelf goal. I think that put the thought in Rand's mind that Zack playing forward may work. He works hard with the skills he has and is always valuable in case a defensemen goes down like Hansen did the other night. Currie is a valuable role guy and clearly a team player.

Brooks Robinson: C+ Like Tolkinen, Brooks has been a healthy scratch a lot this season so I don't know what to expect of him. From what I've seen he brings a chippy, checking line mentality to every shift and has the ability to get under other players skin, something the Bobcats are notorious for. I'm not sure he has much natural scoring ability but he may make up for it defensively and with tenacity.

Dan Clarke: C+ Clarkie seemed primed to have a breakout year and take hold of the number one goalie position. But he has faltered and collected an ugly 3.39 GA and an .868 Save Pct. Much of this can be attributed to the painful protection he's had from his team when he's in net. As Brian Sullivan alluded to Clarke's protection from his team has been lacking and this has doomed him and the team

Ben Arnt: C As much as I want to give Benny a D, he hasn't been terrible. Arnt will never impress anyone with his offensive ability but like a good defensive catcher in baseball a centerman will never be turned away on a hockey team. Playing him on the Jones line, like Rand did Saturday at Umass, is not the answer however.

Bobby Tyson: C Tyson like Currie has stepped up admirably and played well as a defenseman turned forward. His recent scratches do not make sense given the guys that Rand's replaced him with. Tyson plays hard and seems to be able to kill of penalities when need be.

Loren Barron: C- It baffles me that Barron and Hansen continue to be paired together and on the top PP line. Barron has god given athletic ability and some speed that get him out of trouble, but playing more ice time than the likes of Davies, Dalsy and Glaics is simply crazy. His four assists are nice but may be more of an indication that the Jones' and Zurvy can get anybody points on the PP.

Jeremy Langlois: C- The Jeremy Langlois who scored 8 and 12 last year is nowhere to be found. He was expected to come into this year and take the place of one of the lost talents that were in last year's senior class. 2 goals and 1 assist through 13 is not exactly doing that. His ability that we saw last year should surface soon. Until then a healthy scratch night might solidify the notion that he needs to step his game up.

Russell Goodman: C- Goody has great size and after coming off injury last year seemed to be a promising prospect. He has seemed slow, tired and bored on the ice this year. If it is an injury that is one thing, if it's effort, he should be sat.

D'Arcy Oakes: C- Oakes hasn't been terrible as a checking line forward and had a decent game when paired with the Joneses against Harvard but his constant mishandling of the puck has proved troublesome and his lack of productivity earns him this C-.

Zach Hansen: D Hano is lucky he is the lone senior and was charitably given the 'A' this season as his performance has been atrocious. I came under some fire this year when I called out his play. He has proven me to be correct. Multiple pucks hopping his stick, nailing a wrister into an opponents shin pads and breaking his stick on a shank of a shot are just some of the joys he's provided us with this year.

Reese Rolheiser, Cory Hibbeler, Kevin Bui, Sean Coughlin: N/A It's hard to grade any of these guys fairly given their amount of time on the ice. Rolheiser was decent last year but has seem to be hurt or fallen into Rand's dog house. Hibbeler looks good in a limited sample size and Rand should give him a little more PT.

Nothing to say except job well done! I really can't argue with any of your assessments. Many of the guys just aren't playing up to their potential for whatever reason. If it were a chemistry issue you'd think it would have sorted itself out by now. I'm not sure what to think at this point.
