Quinnipiac Bobcats 09-10: Part II

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 09-10: Part II

Yea Sammy Bowles and Rand got into it - As well as infamous Augie D transfer saga! Good times! Maybe this will be the year Rand and Nate square off! It would be funny to see Testa officiating that one!

Maybe they can get some good energy this weekend - A split would be huge

I would love to read the school paper bashing the team?? That seems pretty harsh!

How many goalies has QU ruined in the last 5 years - The only one to do anything was Holden??

Go Cats!!

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 09-10: Part II

I'm not sure there are any "big name" coaches available that we could get even if we wanted to.

Depends on what you think is a big name coach. No one is leaving a successful program in any of the 4 major conferences to come to QU. But there are plenty of assistants at top programs who would take a head coaching job here (see Appert at RPI). I think that's the type of guy we want to look for. Ideally, I like my teams to be coached by an alum, but QU has to wait until they have been in the ECAC long enough for someone to come out of that era of the program and cut their teeth in the coaching ranks. So I see QU hiring an Appert type guy to lift the program to the top of this league, and then when he leaves for a CCHA/WCHA head coaching job, we can look to an alum that has been his protege.

As for Rand, I'll ask just one question: how many losing seasons has he had at Quinnipiac?

Answer: only his first 2 years, but it is much more complicated than that. Yes, he has had remarkable success, but at this point only the seasons in the ECAC matter. Everything before is now irrelevant. The team's record has stayed consistent since the move from the AHA, but their non-conference schedule was much harder before the move as well because they used to travel anywhere to play a top team. Since they came to the ECAC, they have offset the stronger league schedule with a softer non-conference slate. And their record has still gotten worse every year.

The ECAC is a tough league. We are no worse off than any other team in the conference. In fact, being the new kids on the block, I'd say we're probably ahead of a few for what we've accomplished in a few short years.

What has been accomplished? They did almost win the tourney Cashman's last year, but have been underperformers every year since. Maybe their early success unfairly raised expectations, but I don't think so. Nobody really expected them to spend the requisite decade at the bottom of the league like Union because they were still a D1 program, not a team coming from D3.

Compare Rand, in his 5th year in the ECAC, to Leaman, who is in his 7th year at Union and like Rand was a D3 player. He started with a bad team and it took him 2 years to turn them around and head north, then had they were middling around .500 the last 4 years, and now in the 7th they are a contender.

The first year QU finished 10th but made a run, in just their second year they nearly won the league tourney from 5th, and now they have been sinking lower in the middle of the league for the last 3 years as players just seem to be getting worse. He has a few more years, but it's time to grow and move up.

Interesting argument, but I don't think we've had a team with as much talent as that Albany team since.

The team the following year was arguably as talented. They basically only lost Cashman and should have made up for that in gained experience, plus they added Zach Hansen who has been their best offensive defenseman since. And they were 9-3-4 in the league, but then they lost six games in a row to finish the regular season and never recovered from that, even getting spanked 11-0 in the first game at Harvard in the quarters.

Bigger losses last year (Bates, Nelson, Travis), but good additions in Zurevinski, Heichman, and Bouharevich. Can't really say falling one spot again to 7th was awful, but again with the second half collapse, starting 6-4-2 in league and finishing 3-6-1.

Then obviously this year we had so much promise. We were #1 in the PWR. It is by no means over though, so I'll reserve a little judgment.

But the point of the matter is the program would be nowhere near where it is today if it wasn't for Rand and his recruiting.

Absolutely 100% true. No one can ever take this away from him. He got his team into the big leagues all by himself. I chose to go to law school at QU because they were joining the ECAC(only non-ivy offering JDs), so credit Rand for that too. But now he has to prove he can continue his previous level of success here.

Would you say in four years that if we haven't been back to Albany or to NCAAs you'd think we needed a coaching change?

Absolutely if we haven't even been back to Albany/AC, maybe if we haven't won a game there again. I think four more years is a good max cutoff.

If the complaining was rational, it would hold merit.

It gets more rational each time. This is how coaching changes happen. It is a process. Eventually, he will have to go for the good of the program continuing to grow. The question is whether that is when he is Dan Fridgen's age or if it's when he has Tim Taylor status (been around forever, one reg season title to show for it).

(Pecknold) is an expert at wasting talent.

Kind of agree this is a bit of a problem, especially this year. Can you say Brandon Wong? The kid was a pure goal scorer as a freshman, what has happened with him? His slight dip his sophomore year was explainable as the league woke up to what he was, but he has continued to get worse each year. It's either a woman, bad personal habits, or bad coaching. They have not played to their potential since Cashman was leading them. The senior class is underperforming.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 09-10: Part II

Hey guys. I'm doing a research piece on the Hobey and I'm wondering if you guys can shed some light on why Bryan Leitch seemed to have been completely overlooked last year. I mean, he led the league in scoring by a considerable amount and was only second team all-ECAC and was completely snubbed as a Hobey candidate. Was there some overriding reason behind that?

I was overseas last season and really didn't get a good grasp on what was going on. :D

He is a one-way player, doesn't really get physical or play defense. He is also slow. Just an exceptional passer really.

According to the Hobey Baker website the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Criteria is as follows:

1. Candidates must exhibit strength of character both on and off the ice.

2. Candidates must contribute to the integrity of the team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game.

3. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportmanship.

4. Candidates must comply with all NCAA rules: be full time students in an accredited NCAA college or university; and complete 50% or more of the season.

And from the rumors I have heard, this was not Brian Leitch (lack of strong character). As pointed out above, he was a very one way player - not strong on defense. He was also hot and cold. There were several games last year where it was painful to see how little he could accomplish in some games, but when he did well, it really showed, as obvious through his stats.
He was not a well-rounded player/athlete which is probably why he was not looked at for the award.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 09-10: Part II

here's the Chronicle article:

WHAT HAPPENED?
Men's Ice Hockey experts weigh in on QU's collapse

"When you look at the first 13 games (12-1), the goaltending was superior, they played hard for 60 minutes - in fact got stronger in the third period of the games - and they seemed to get ALL the bounces. Since then they are 3-12-2. The goaltending is not as steady as it was earlier in the season. They rarely play a complete 60 minutes, and it seems every time they make a mistake the other team capitalizes, and every goaltender they face seems to play like Martin Brodeur. Confidence is a huge part of success in sports, and right now the Bobcats are questioning themselves." - Bill Schweizer, play-by-play accouncer on WQUN

"Everything went right for them, then it did a 180 and everything went wrong. The effort was there, the bounces weren't" - Chris Kostopoulos, color commentator on WQUN

"There's no question that there's been a lack of confidence and consistency over the last two months. They are a very young team, and it's the vets that really haven't been producing a whole lot this time" - Jamie Palatini, WQAQ Co-Sports Director

"The hot goaltending that was so key in the beginning of the season is no longer there" - Corey Hersch, WQAQ Co-Sports Director

"The hockey team isn't aggressive enough. Once they fall behind, it seems as if they don't want to try anymore" - Cassie Comeau, Chronicle Staff Writer

"when the lights got bright and expectations started to rise, the team faltered" - Maxx McNall, Chronicle Staff Writer

"I think they stopped working hard. Once they got up there in the rankings, they thought things would take care of themselves. You need to work hard the entire season, no matter your ranking" - Robin Schuppert, Chronicle Staff Writer

I'm interested to hear other's thoughts on the topic, and the reaction you have to this...

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 09-10: Part II

Schweizer and Kostopoulos are spot on. Confidence (or the lack thereof) and the "bounces". Since the Yale loss, they've only really mailed it in against Brown and Holy Cross. They competed, or at least attempted to, in most of the other games since.

I see. Thanks! I was a little perplexed at how he didn't even make the top 10 as such a high scorer. That would explain a bit of it.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 09-10: Part II

I saw the Yale QU game at Ingalls this year and quite honestly it was one of the fastest skated, well played college hockey games I have ever seen in person. The game was played at such a high level that I thought QU would be a force to be reckoned with for the rest of the season, no one is more surprised than me at their fall this winter. They obviously are a talented squad, that is why I question the coaching. Yale is completely the opposite, they will never be lauded as the most talented team in the league, just the hardest working. I am rooting for both teams this weekend.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 09-10: Part II

I really have to say I don't agree with all these nay-sayers against Rand. I truly don't think he's the one to blame for the downfall of the season. Granted, I am not familiar with the inner workings of the hockey side of the arena, but from what I've seen with working with other sports, there is only so much a great coach can do.
I think arguably we can all say that Rand has been an amazing coach for this team over the years. The seniors stopped producing and games got sloppy and the downward spiral started. When players aren't performing to their potential, the coach can only do so much to bring back the luster and get them to reach where they were before. A lot of that comes from the team itself, working together, utilizing everyone's skills and toughing it out.
Now, I'm not saying it's not possible for the coach to screw things up and ruin the potential of a team. But from what I have seen this year, it hasn't been Rand's faults that have led us down this miserable road. A lot of bad luck, amazing opponent's goaltenders, shoddy goaltending on our part, and a lack of 60 minute performances have created this - many of these which are out of Rand's control. so how can we blame him?
As I said at the start, I don't work with men's hockey regularly, so I am going off speculation, but I have worked closely with other teams, and at the end of the day, as long as the coach is a good coach, which I think Rand has thoroughly proven, it is the players and their game that determines the outcome of the season.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 09-10: Part II

Not to rain on anyones parade here but we have 4 very critical games left to this regular season. There's still a chance we can finish in the top 4. Our focus should be on supporting the team with everything we've got until our final game is played. All this what-if speculation about coaching and whatever else is pointless until after the season.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 09-10: Part II

Why are they waiting until midnight on the evening before their first possible ECAC playoff game on the 5th to make general public tickets available?

I'm under Mark's umbrella on this one (clever use of his metaphor, eh?). Let's focus on supporting our team for the next two weeks. There is incredible parity in the ECAC. On any given night any team can beat the other. Desire and work ethic has been the difference most nights. Here's hoping our guys have the desire and out-work RPI, Union, Brown, and Yale in that order.

Go Q!

PS. Let's see those yellow "Beat Yale" T-shirts around campus next week.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 09-10: Part II

Big weekend for the Bobcats. We must somehow come home with at least 2 points, and preferably against RPI. The goal right now is to make sure we get home ice for the playoffs so every point is critical. It's time to show what this team is really made of.

Go Q!

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 09-10: Part II

4 a.m. Mark jeez!

Oh well, aside from Mark falling asleep during the game tonight, I think our boys will show up. They started riding a little high after back to back shutouts and maybe carried some of that Quinnipiac arrogance into Potsdam. We all saw how that turned out. Maybe with a some humility in hand our boys can go into Albany and play the way we know they can.

I'd have no problem with a split this weekend but it will not be easy. RPI has their freakout on Saturday and all those alumnus and friends of the school will be in town for the game Friday. AND the Union game is senior night, so neither game will be easy. But that being said we haven't done too shabby in the Capital District since joining the league. 2-1-1 at both RPI and Union in that time and thats not counting sweeping RPI during the first round of the ECACs in our first year in the league. HOWEVER, it should be noted that this year's teams both strike way more fear than teams of past Capital District lore. Regardless, I believe we'll take two this weekend, not sure which two but two nonetheless.

Go Q!

You kids! No problem staying awake for my boys!

I, too, think they will show up and play hard tonight. They have to as there aren't many tomorrow's left in this season.

Mark, I see the ECAC writer is once again predicting a rough weekend for the Q. I hope your lads can earn a few points this weekend.

The Denvers host the Techs this weekend, and while I still feel less than healthy, I'm going to put on my game face and make it to Magness for both contests as the Pioneers try and skate a little closer to a WCHA-regular-season title. Michigan Tech is the only team in the WCHA Denver has not yet faced this season. I'm hoping DU can manintain its focus on the task at hand after a strong series sweep last weekend against Minnesota. Now is not the time for Denver to become complacent because the tenth place team is headed to town. It's possible Tech may return to Denver in a few weeks for a first round playoff series.

Next weekend the boys head to Mankato for a road series before wrapping up the regular season schedule with a home and home series against Colorado College. Have a good weekend. Over and out. :)

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats 09-10: Part II

definitely a tough weekend this week, but we'll see what it brings. the one good thing is the team plays well with strong crowds, so even though the crowds will be against it, they may feed off the energy which will be good.
i unfortunately won't be able to listen to all of either of the games, but i'm expecting some text updates from you diehards. i hope to hear some good thigns.
