One other point. That list Zlax got of Borek and MacCloskey's recruits is impressive.
However interesting the UNH folks break it down by assistant ( and obviously keeping the same head coach may make that obvious). I have thought about a PC list I would label it by head coach (again maybe fairly obvious since for the first 2 the key assistant was the same--Berard). At this point if you took Pooley second half of his PC career from the group brought in in September of 2000 it would be 6 classes, Army gets 5 classes with next September since he overlapped Army's last class with some late replacement (Mauerman in particular) 5 for Leaman.
To begin with I would see how weak the Army recruits were and where they fell proved it. I have often heard he was so hands on but without a direction, a vision, and largely worked at cross purposes to what Berard accomplished (also note how Bennett flourished after Army sent him packing because he worked with a coach who had a vision). However look at Pooley's list and this is post Rask-Schaefer-Jon D-Fegoe. He got Wild, Woods, Regan Kelly, Darth Platt, Rheault, McDonald and solid guys like Chaput and Zingoni among his recruits. Still he got mediocre results and part of the time he still had the class of '03. I venture to say Pooley was clearly lacking in charisma but more importantly either because of where sports was being relegated or because of the lack of charisma, maybe credit ability he could not tie the vision he had together and get the most out of his players. Starting basically from scratch post 3 last place finishes with no better players than those Pooley players, but a clear plan and vision Leaman delivered a national championship.
Going a bit further beside what appears to be a bias toward Leaman from the start, it was clear the 2 finalist Leaman and Quinn each had a vision. The third finalist Cavanagh, at the very least could not articulate such a vision in his inert view (and it appears in other interviews)
Now in regards to that list from UNH. Maybe what Whistling Dick benefitted most from McCliskey was he had an assistant with a vision who could see the whole picture of the proper blend of players. Borek maybe lacks that vision, can realize good players since there are plenty of good players to his credit, he just lacks that vision. At PC that vision is coming from Leaman directly..
Let's face it McCloskey got a head job with an elite program even if it was on the women's side, that still might be a better job that some of the Atlantic teams and CHA teams beginning to rise the slightly above 40 Division 1 teams when McCloskey began to 60 now
That brings up the other point McCloskey had less competition to go up against than Borek does today. It's also possible like PC dip at the turn of the century there is less administrative support now at UNH than 15 years ago (point their women's team is truly in a funk). Borek also worked for grandpa Umile while McCliskey worked for legacy building Umile. Maybe it matters players McCloskey was competing for we're not the BC BU targets, but the UML PC targets and Borek has to make a much better case to wangle those guys into his camp since those 2 teams have evolved into solid teams Also if I'm not mistaken the Whitt was brand new when McCloskey recruited, now Borek at least according to some UNH people finds the facilities a handicap.
