Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

I think it depends on how quickly he can get a basketball coach he will spend his time there as it is the top money maker, then the Frozen 4 will happen then after that a new coach will be here........now that BU is out do you think Parker is available ?????

I hope that isn't a serious question...Parker is at BU until his contract runs out in 2015 at the earliest. He is also executive AD here so there is no chance for him to leave especially with the team he has coming back next year(only one regular senior). I know some of my fellow BU fans call for his head every couple years but he isnt going anywhere anytime soon. Now if you want to talk about BU associate coach Mike Bavis that would be a possibility but he doesn't have any PC ties and BU didn't exactly threaten for a title this year unless you consider being ranked #1 in November a threat or a miracle happens and we get an at large berth by multiple teams losing this weekend. I think BC's associate head coach Cavanaugh? would be a name to consider as well.

Of course he does!!!! We played hockey and baseball together growing up (plus we went to CM together), so that's his in!!!! ;)

I think that he's do a fine job and I feel that both he or Coach Cavanaugh would be a much better choice than Bennett. I think that the program needs to get away from "ties to PC".

Rick Bennett would be a fantastic choice. Has been the main recruiter for Union and has built a great program, with zero scholarships. He was an all american at PC and a Hobey Baker finalist as well as a pro player.

The key is he has a great relationship with all of the junior coaches and programs. He also has a great rep with the players, who he has proven he can deal with and develop.

Rick Bennett is the guy for the job. He is a proven winner, recruiter and developer. PC should be all over him and get him on board.

All you have to do is look at Union's roster and the kids he has brought in. Tough place to get kids to go to and again, ZERO scholarships and little aid.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Your points are well taken, perhaps Bennett would be the only assistant to be considered but he would have to get at least one new coach here.....Berard has been here too long and is stagnant

It is difficult to argue with RB's resume.

Union had losing seasons in 12 of the 14 years before he showed up. Had never won more than 18 games in a season, by old PC pal Stan Moore.

They now have had 4 winning seasons in a row and have had win totals of 15, 19, 21 and 26 this year.
They finished the regular season ranked 4th in country, their highest ever on top of winning the ECAC conference regular season crown, at 17-3-2, another first in the programs history. If you look at their roster, it is safe to say that with scholarship money, which Union does not have, he could have pulled many to PC.

He deserves it.

Those Providence fans who think they are getting a guy with head coaching experience in to coach at PC are irrational and delusional. There is not one proven, successful head coach out there that I (as a fan of HE who'd like all teams to be competitive) would like to see at PC. Sorry. Not happening besides a successful D3 coach moving up. I think Rick Bennett would be a very good choice as would Dave Peters.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Kurt Kleinendorst

He is a head coach and ex PC high end player. Sorry Irish, it is a highly sought after job

Word is hat has been tossed in

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Ron Wilson. Also has PC ties and was fairly successful while at Providence. I believe he too has head coaching experience.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

91 after the excellent post by your friend Hockeydad even you have to be thinking about Bennett......bringing Union as far as they have come with no scholarships speaks volumes for what we need here and he does have an excellent resume and surely cannot do any worse than his predecessor, hire him for 5 years and lets see what happens

Thinking about Bennett???? I'm already DREAMING about him!!!! :)

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Bennett was already an assistant here for 5 years. I'm not saying he may not do a good job -- but if you want to talk about what he did at Union as an assistant, why not mention what he didn't do here as an assistant coach?

Just sayin' it's a two way street...

Kleindorst didn't want the job when they hired Pooley...I believe he said that he didn't have the experience at the time (this was in the Projo a few years after the fact). Who knows what the circumstance would be now.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

I'll begin by echoing Freds and as I noted a couple of days ago. Hockey is different then basketball, jobs are fewer, turnover far less, and jumping seems far less prevelent. I went through the exercise to show how few D1 head coches would even consider a jump. I also noted that in general the jump directly from juniors to college is rare. Two fold one the control some of the better junior coaches have far outweighs what they would have for control in college and possibly even (especially at a place like PC) a step back in pay. I don't know D3 well enough but I looked at the eastern D3 coaches and none of the one more likely to be willing to leave a cushy enivronment really made my heart race.

At least in the east right now Ricky is probably the hottest assistant out there. As Hokeydad notes what has been accomplished at Union is extremely impressive. I think it has also provided him with skills which would translate well at PC considering how little support he really will get. He know has 11 years as an assistant. I would certainly discount your criticism of him for his time at PC for two reasons. First those were his first 5 years as an assistant (the 2nd guy in fact), his primary role was teaching and you might remember it was he who took over the defense in his first year 2000-2001 and got us to the finals. In the last 6 years he has taken on more responsiblity and has had a chance to cut his teeth with a coach most knowledgeable people consider one of the best. I would judge him on those years first. Then second I would look at the PC years and now in hindsight you very well might not like wat Pooley did but he kept the ship from sinking. As I noted before PC never recovered from the downgrade of sports in '99 and the last class they recruited was the class of '03. From that point on it was survival mode. I actually think you do need a PC guys. You have to sell the program and while an outside can do it (as I noted below I think Deraney does a good job) I think a PC guy has the potential to do it.

For the other names mentioned. I thought Bavis was Parker's heir apparent. If he is not and would be interested I would hope the Hockeyguy would check it out. Cavanagh not so much....because of BC's advantages it is hard to say how he would adjust to the slums. Tremblay would be interesting also. The Monarchs are always one of the best teams, he clearly has contacts, however again I would wonder about the control issue.

Kurt Kleinendorst doesn't really do it now. He's been all over the place. He has 1 year of non professional hockey experience, a year with the national team a couple of years ago. Army at least had the 6 years as McShane's assistant. Trouble is PC's stock feel an awful lot in the 10 years he was gone and the power structure was much more of a have and have not situation. I do agree he did express no interest back in '95, though it was understanding with Smith coming on board the guys who had come through PC were advised not to take the job, it would be a dead end (turned out that way for Pooley). He was not a candidate 6 years ago. The three who even got interviews were Army, Berard, and Hughes. I would not even be enamored with Hughes anymore though since he was a more defensive minded coach he might have staved off disaster slightly better.

On a side note I should say I've heard several times now the rumor is in the next couple of years a major upgrade will happen at Schneider. Tie it in with building a garage. Not really sure of how they will ft it in. If I understand correctly the softball field now goes up to Hendricken field, the track facility ties into the garage also. The lobby becomes locker rooms at Schneider and the entrance comes from the softball field side. Because of the new fitness center though I understand there is no plans to add that in which still puts them behind the other schools

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

I heard the rumor around PC is minimally Driscoll gets one more year and possibly the ax falls on him in the next couple of weeks. No more missteps for him:D
