Wow, Driscoll is cleaning house. Five years left on Davis' contract. Did Army have remaining years on his? This is costing somebody some dollars.

It needed to be done...I don't think anyone is really that surprised.

Army had 2 years left.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

I would throw out the name of Jim Montgomery, the former Mainuh. Jim went to RPI as an assistant when Seth Appert took over the team five years ago. RPI's program and PC's mirror each other in so many ways. Appert became coach at RPI a year after Tim at PC. RPI has been on a steady climb ever since. They flirted with top 10 rankings throughout most of the winter and, unfortunately lost to a tough Colgate team in the ECAC playoffs. On paper, Appert's record the first few years did not look good at all, but on the ice, the progress was definitely there. Look for them to be an NCAA plaer in the years to come.

Montgomery left RPI after last season and became head coach and GM of the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the USHL. They currently sit in first place in the eight team Western Conference with a 29-11 record. He did good work at RPI and appears to be doing good work at Dubuque.

One of the things worth noting at RPI is the amount of work put into upgrading their old barn. They are turning the Houston Field House into a first class facility.

Side benefit, there would be riots in Orono. He's a lot of people's dream replacement for Timmy W.

The house won't be clean until Driscoll is sent packing

. I don't know what went wrong with McShane -- he was here too long, got burned out, had off-ice issues -- because as you and I have said before, the program had a major measure of success (20 win seasons, extremely close to the Frozen Four in 89, etc.) before it went bad for him. Yet he clearly still could recruit because look at what Pooley was able to do with mostly McShane's players over Pooley's first two seasons -- pretty much the most successful in Pooley's entire time here. Yet those players were struggling under McShane at the end before he got the axe.

McShane was a complex problem, part of it was off ice issues, but he hit the beginning of administrative apathy. Marianatto was digging out of his basketball disaster (Gordie C fired after one season), the 80's boom ended and things tigthtened up leading to cuts and he was not able to build on the successive strong class he had recruited, the Benntt class, the WIldgoose class, and the Gaudreau class. Things loosened up a bit his last couple of years and they were able to bring in a couple of decent class that Pooley got to enjoy. Pooley was steady through the graduation of the Disalvatore class (Rask, Fregoe, Schaefer), those were the last class recruited before PC killed their athletic department. On the paper dropping 3 sports but badly cutting many others. From that PC never recovered. You mention PC is under the illusion people show back up, things will be fine. Hiring Army was done with that illusion, bring in someone from your successful days and magically things are going to be better. As I said hopefully Shanley and Driscoll understand this or no one will be too keen on this job.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

what 3 sports did pc cut? just wondering.

My football team, and baseball. Baseball won the Big East beating powerhouses like UMiami et al. There were more sports as well. CAV please help a brother out....... I'm too tired to think. :)

The big cut was baseball, the golf and men's tennis went south also. The women's volleyball team took a big hit. There was a long delay in getting scholarships for the women's hockey team to even close to the other scholarship schools and while I'm not 100% sure I don't believe they still fully funded like UNH or BU

In the meantime the Hockey guys speaks:

I'll believe it when I see it

Hockey guy has a line of apps for the job !!!!!! Soon they will be fighting to come here

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

HM I agree, but its kind of like the beginning of The Dark Knight, with the bank robbery. He fires Army and Keno, then on Monday he gets dumped. All nice and neat.

That would be perfect

Ok, SO lets have some fun. The Hockey Guy says he wants to upgrade the arena. What would you do?

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

alfond arena with better sight lines and all chairback seats. that's what i would do. it'd be awesome to have a student section balcony. the current location for the student section is horrendous (see: the BU fans making us sit down) and you can't see like a quarter of the ice.

i mean if they could figure out how to blow up the building but keep the friends of friar hockey room + hockey library that'd be nice too.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

First I fire Ross Brooks the most obnoxious rink manager in the nation, next fix the sound system so you can talk when they play music and adjust the inputs so the messages can be understood, then I would redo the restrooms and add a real room to sell PC gear......follow this with a curtain to block the wind from entering the area by the rest rooms when the front door opens and move the student section to the far end of the building so they are right behind the visiting goal for 2 periods (its called home ice for a reason)....move the coaches parking to the area across from where they are now and add handicap spaces there.....Find places to put pictures of past PC stars so the new kids will understand the tradition...

These are cheap fixes and can be done with the existing budget if they want, but should we get back to the way it was then find a way to either raise the roof for more seats or raise the money for a new rink with a full size sheet of ice.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

I would expand the lobby to about twice its size. I would put a concourse around the outside with more concessions and rest rooms. It looks pretty sad when there is only one concession window open and the line fills the lobby. I would take out the *&^^$ sound system or find someone who has a clue about using it.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

I hope the hockey guy is watching Merrimack/Maine. Volpe looks great. I like the 1 mission theme and winning puts butts in seats.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

“That doesn’t bother me at all,” Driscoll said of the critics who feel he should’ve been swept out of Alumni Hall in the last few days along with his coaches. “I would promise you that the vast majority of folks who criticize me have never hired a basketball coach or a hockey coach. Or played sports. It’s easy to sit on the outside and criticize.

“I can promise you they don’t understand any of it and nor do I expect them to. But I realize that at the end of the day you are judged based on whether you win. Did you win enough games?”

What freakin tool.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

Great way to reach out to your swiftly diminishing fan base there Bobby. You pretty much blew everyone off. Dope.

It would be fun watching March hockey. Maybe someday.
