Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

I respect Coach Army for stepping down. It was the right thing to do. Time to turn the page.
Hopefully the college hires a solid candidate with D1-COLLEGE coaching experience at a program that has had a track record for being a solid program.

Thank you to Coach Army for doing the right thing. I wish his family all the best going forward.

Freds, we are going to hold you to it!!! Can't wait to see you and PCO back at the coffin in the fall!!! :)

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

A few thoughts:

1. Unlike in basketball where there is a lot of movement. I did a quick count (I think I lost someone along the way), but 19 D1 teams have an alumnus coach for 5 or more years, 29 have had their coach 5 or more years, 2 others (Brown included) now have an alumnus in charge. I would think most of those guys would not be keen on taking over a woe begone program like Providence if they have established something where they are and if they have we don’t need to sink further. Of the 6 that are left only 1 is an Eastern coach in the Atlantic for Sacred Heart. At the very least I would want to know why they are 6-23-6 in that league

2. Of the assistants I really don’t see a lot to grab either. Casey Jones at Cornell, Peters at Dartmouth, maybe Bobby Jay at Harvard. Maybe the other Notre Dame assistant (Andy Slaggert) though I am sure he would be warned what a cesspool Providence is. Beyond that maybe Lassonde at UNH and despite what you most of you feel--Ricky

3. Hopefully Driscoll is honest with the new guy and with himself. I think when he hired Army he had a very poor read on the program for a guy who had been there 5 years. He wanted to do the same thing we wanted dump the dump and run. However in hindsight as just by how Army was reconstructing the team we were going to go back to being a more defensive team. The other thing is he better warn the new guy we aren’t pulling in the true blue chipper to solve you offensive problems. I think if Driscoll had thought that through 6 years ago then truly Army wasn’t the guy. The good thing is I would suspect they will look wider for a coach this time.

4, The negative is I doubt they will spend the money they spent to hire Army. They have to deal with the payout to Davis. There still has to be some payout to Army, though I’d suspect it might be offset if he had a landing place (like the Toronto organization). Further hurt by the fact there is little revenue to support a high salary. If they did have to pay all of Army’s salary, with attendance as low as it is, pretty much all the money from attendance would be needed to pay that off.

5. I agree with the article we won’t get a sniff from Quinn or Hynes nor would look to far down other roads in that neighborhood.

6. One area we might look into is juniors. A lot of those guys run the whole program there from putting the team together to deal with other organization details beside just coaching. Mark Carlson at Cedar Rapids comes to mind.

7. The guy we hire though has to realize his job is more then to coach, but also to sell the program. I think one fault of Army’s was he would talk with the press, but he did not seem to like to do the caravan’s they do and talk up the alumni. Money ain’t going to fall from the trees.

8 By my calculation most of the recruiting is done for next year (well it should be everyone else has turned not to the following year but 2013 and 2014 even. My count figures we have 1 scholarship open and maybe some fraction of another. So probably they were looking for 1 more forward. We lose 5, have added 2 and get Cross back as a medical red shirt so he is now part of the class of ’15.

9. Can you finish lower then 10th? We lose 6 of our top 9 scorers. Laugh all you want about Derek, but he will be our 2nd leading returning scorer. We have to hope Cross is somewhat close to a scorer, Bergland rebounds, that Acciari comes in and like in High school is a slighter better producer then what Derek gave us this year, that Luke is not another forward just like the rest of our forwards and that upperclassmen like Maloney, Landman, Simon and Ferullo cn compete and score a bit.

10. I think the first order of business if I was the new coach since I don’t believe Alex has committed anywhere would be to re-recruit him, he would be eligible right away at Providence as opposed to sitting a semester everywhere else. I’d either try to keep the Kaib commitment, but move it back to 2012 like originally planned (he didn’t wow me at the USNDPT game I think he needs more seasoning) or move the little used senior Brown up front since when he was recruited it was for his offensive skills as a defenseman and what seems to be holding him back is his lack of aggressiveness on the blueline

11, One thing for sure whoever coaches if he isn’t a defensive guy himself we need a coach that can work with the defensemen. If we do get a guy like Bennett I say he has to consider his classmate Jeff Serowik as the 2nd assistant Possibly if he finally ends his playing days, maybe a Jay Leach

12. Whatever we do for a coach I think we need to better execute the basic Pooley plan just better then he did….in other words look to Merrimack. Strong in goal, tough defense and enough guys who can score.

13. The difference is that Hockey is Merrimack’s D1 sport. The time their game was on NESN, they talk about how the administration has committed to the program. For any success to occur the school has to make that commitment. A large renovation of Schneider has got to be the first order of business. Second the administration has to sign on to not making this program an after thought---it shows and it kills everything. The ultimate as noted was having senior day at the same time as the basketball team had theirs. You got some third string priest mugging for shots with seniors. Bet those pictures don’t go into many family albums.

14. Next PC has to find ways to enlarge their revenue stream for hockey. Their ticket prices are far below everyone else’s, yet they draw flies. Maybe you won’t get to the BC/BU level of ticket pricing but you need to get to the NU level. One other thing to keep in mind in PC’s heyday say ‘83 Schneider’s prices were on par with everyone else’s. None of the other schools which now make up HEA had a rink that could handle more then 4666. Now 5 exceed 6K, most by a good margin and Alfond is just below that. Only us and Merrimack can’t pop out crowds of over 4K. So it is a duel problem, getting people back, holding them, but also really getting the crowd enlarged beyond that level. If you can’t enlarge Schneider’s seating capacity, then it will be hard to justify putting more effort into this program.

15. Rank where you think PC’s hockey facility stands next to the other 9 and rank where you think administrative support stands compared to the other 9 schools. My guess is we are at the bottom. If that does not change it does not matter who you hire, they will flame out and burn also.

16. Which leads to just like the article said, what coach now should not come into this process with their eyes not wide open to the pitfalls. If you can’t support one of the legends of your program what down the road am I going to find. McShane and Pooley failed before Army. Both have bounced back nicely once leaving PC. It has to tell yo something.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

PC must look to the Junior programs and recruit an existing head coach not an assistant from any level, we tried that and it failed every time

Single biggest, most disingenuous, phoney post of the year. What a joke. Did you send him a card, a pink one I am sure
Pats pizza has good closets, get back in it.

Your insistance now several times made my look at the bio's of all the D1 men's coaches. The only two went directly from coaching coaching juniors to a job. Frank Serratore had coached Omaha for the year just before he got the Denver job (long time ago) and had college assistant on his resume also. The only other one is Princeton coach Guy Gadowsky and he got the Princeton job after the Fairbank job who hired him from juniors. The vast majority have no junior cedits on their resum., those that do used it in most cases as a first step. I guess those who most have the qualities you want are entrenched in juniors, may even have a stake in their programs financially, those inexperienced will pay their dues and move up in due time. What I did see were a bunch of guys who had head jobs in D3. George Roll at Clarkson might be a good example. Many simply come from good college coaching trees---Miami's Blasi seems to have the best one.

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

I just don't want some learn as we go set up again, the program can't afford another flop

Oh, fill the steins to dear old Maine
Shout till the rafters ring
Stand and drink a toast once again
Let every loyal Maine man sing
Then drink to all the happy hours
Drink to the careless days
Drink to Maine, our alma mater
The college of our hearts always

To the trees, to the sky, to the Spring and its glorious happiness
To the youth, to the fire, to the light that is moving and calling us
To the gods, to the fate, to the rulers of men and their destinies
To the lips, to the eyes, to the girls who will love us someday

Were you aware?

"Maine" is pronounced "go blue".

Well what we get will depend on 2 things in my book. How good of a job Driscoll (or some committee) can get a fit for PC--Scary thought since Driscoll's track record is weak and I'm not sure who is available to help Lou seems relatively disinterested and the other two stalwarts of the program are most likely a bit peeved at the lack of administrative support. Which is the second thing beginning with salary and as I noed below how much committment the administration is willing to make (and of course how believeable they are to a candidate)

Re: Providence College 2010-2011 - Things are looking up.

McShane and Pooley failed before Army. Both have bounced back nicely once leaving PC. It has to tell yo something.

The only thing I would say to counter that is that even now Pooley isn't a head coach. I am not sure given his interpersonal skills he's ever going to be able to handle that job. A guy who obviously was good at a few things but couldn't handle being a head coach -- or at least not a head coach at PC. I don't know what went wrong with McShane -- he was here too long, got burned out, had off-ice issues -- because as you and I have said before, the program had a major measure of success (20 win seasons, extremely close to the Frozen Four in 89, etc.) before it went bad for him. Yet he clearly still could recruit because look at what Pooley was able to do with mostly McShane's players over Pooley's first two seasons -- pretty much the most successful in Pooley's entire time here. Yet those players were struggling under McShane at the end before he got the axe.

I agree with everything else wholeheartedly. The program clearly has issues with the rink, lack of promotion, attendance and simple care. I think they under the illusion at PC if people come back everything is going to magically turn around. Surely selling tickets is a huge factor but that is not going to change a dated venue (and it is dated; I love Schneider and basically grew up in that rink but it hasn't significantly changed since before I was born basically) or the fact that hockey is an afterthought amongst PC's athletic dept. As much as Army's record is horrible, and I had my doubts as I did at the end of his first season that he could actually do the job, I recognize PC's problems go far beyond the simple coaching of the team. And like 91, I also commend Army for stepping down and seemingly making things easier for PC to start the change of process for the future.

This is going to be a tough hire unless you really sell Hockey East on the prospective coach. I also agree the Friars are going to be near the basement for the forseeable future. Someone looking in from the outside is going to look at the last 20 years at PC and see only fleeting success that was never sustained by any coach who's been here. Even Pooley's two truly good years were surrounded by mediocrity. And Army's record of futility speaks for itself. The facilities need work, the program isn't being supported by the school as it ought to be -- and unless the school decides to push it, and upgrade it, I agree PC is going to be forever struggling up the hill. Not that they're going to cut it -- but let's be honest, the amount of attention they have given it compared with other school surely leads you to wonder what they are thinking.

As far as coaching goes, I'm not as high on bringing in a juniors-coach, but then again, I also recognize what current head coach elsewhere would want to come here. And I am firmly against bringing in yet another assistant or someone without college experience. No matter how gaudy their resume might appear -- and Pooley looked to be a great catch, as did Army -- the fact they had not been a head coach in college really was like rolling the dice. They can't afford to go down that road another time...but who does that leave?

I see the Union guy being a target amongst folks on the board here, for obvious reasons, but why would the coach at Union want to leave what he has going on there and come here? Because frankly it's a whole lot easier to win in the ECAC than it is to battle the big boys in Hockey East at a school like Providence, to say nothing of the fact that it looks like he has a good thing going there right now.

Always thought pc's biggest problem was recruiting.
some of the kids theyve taken and taken early just baffle me. Saw Adams play a lot in high school following the catholic conference up here in MA and never thought he was that good at MC and no clue what buf saw in him. Guys wheel around him all the time and he's not your prototypical puck mover. he was exposed a lot this year and he was supposed to be one of this teams better rookies
Bergland was good for a while when they skated all over the place but disapeared after they went to a defensive game. product of the system? you bet.
all the prep kids suck. the good prep kids go to bc or bu. 100% of the time. no excuse for not adjusting to that. everyone raved taht they would be a skating team when army took over and he did for a while but when his recruiting caught up to him and he recruiting guys who weren't talented enough to play that system he had to change. good for him for realizing it but its his own fault because he wasnt a good recruiter and recruiting the wrong players.
that makes for a dumb coach.

i agree with someone below, pc needs a guy with good jr background (USHL????) who can recruit good talent and find those diamonds that the big schools miss. hire a good x and o guy as an assistant. they need someone who knows talent because this team is lacking it big time
