Re: Providence - 2009-10 What is in the glass?

Sad news, I just read in the Cafe that Brian Burke's youngest son died in a car accident today.

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2010/02/05/sp-brendan-burke-accident.html

This really is a sad story. Brendan Burke was part of the Miami, Ohio, team as a student manager and with them at the Frozen Four last year. This link was posted in the thread about the accident. Check out John Buccigross' thoughtful essaay about Brendan and his father. 'We love you, this won't change a thing'.

The essay is a tribute to this young man and this family, part of the PC extended family.

FIRE ARMY! There I said it!

There you said it, not me, lol. ;)

Well PC will be (if they haven't already) basically eliminated from the playoffs with a loss tonight. They'd be 10 points behind UVM with only 7 games left.

Looks like the coach is already planning ahead to next year, though, right? PC Hockey -- where it's always "next year". :o

Re: Providence - 2009-10 What is in the glass?

I think Coach Amy did a great job last night reviewing laptop data which directly led to the Friars netting a goal late in the second. IMO it was nothing short of a classic game adjustments.

I would also like to credit coach, I am not sure what he said between periods but boy the team responded by playing some of the most inspired hockey I have seen in many many years resulting in 3 shots on goal for the 3rd period. Sure it wasn't enough shots where had they scored on all three they still wouldn't have even tied the game but the drive and determination displayed after coaches between periods pep talk was the type that will forever associate Coach Amy and the word legend for many years after he decides to call it a career.

It really is no wonder why hockey guy signed him to a 5 year extension, rumor has it that in a previous between period pep talk HG was brought to tears with the motivational words of Coach.

Yes, we are so so so lucky to have a guy like coach Amy around, he will be missed when some team comes in and snatches him away from us...until then let us all just sit back and marvel at the magic he creates and joy in brings into our lives every hockey season...

After the performance of the hockey team and basketball team this year, I'm thinking the entire Athletic department needs to be set on fire and earth salted so nothing will grow there again.

All of the above = 95

I would just like to experience a hockey team I root for winning something before the end of March.

Re: Providence - 2009-10 What is in the glass?

Can't wait for the Cox broadcast tonight. I'm guessing Bellemore and Coach will be setting the table for next season.

In fact I guarantee that's what the "angle" will be...

Anyway ought to be fun with the inbetween periods Laptop Breakdown, always a rousing call to arms that gets the players (most of whom stare off into space) excited.

Re: Providence - 2009-10 What is in the glass?

Paul Pooley must read this thread every morning and laugh his *** off.

Should we all be apologizing to him right now?

Re: Providence - 2009-10 What is in the glass?

PC played a decent third period and overtime. Vermont carried the second. I was outraged to see a vermont player run Beaudry and break his stick on him. No PC player batted an eye. ***??? Army looked like a guy talking with a waiter after the 5 minute major. NO FIRE. PC killled off the 5 nicely though.

Re: Providence - 2009-10 What is in the glass?

GREAT GREAT GREAT Adjustments by coach for tinights game, he really had the team fired up. I hope tonight is the springboard to an actual win next weekend. I am not taking any chances and will be scouting the best spots out on Admiral Street for the parade.

A normal Bunyan call on Farrer never ever should have been 5 minutes. I loved the way coach made Bunyan wait and wait before sending Maloney to serve the penalty. You know it certainly intimidated Bunyan who called a holding penalty later in the game. Enjoy coach while he is here cuz it is only a matter of time until we cant afford him.

I heard coach is so confident that next year is the year that he is willing to accept only one dollar pay for the whole year if they don't make it to the HE semi's---now that is confidence!!!!!!

A HUGE THANK YOU TO WHOEVER TURNED THE MUSIC DOWN VERY MUCH APPRECIATED

Re: Providence - 2009-10 What is in the glass?

BUO, I too have enjoyed the lower volume level. I noticed a gentleman had grabbed the hockey guy and talked to him for 10 minutes last week. As I walked by I overheard him mentioning the number of people dropping season tickets due to the earsplitting volume.

In regards to the comments about the athletic departments lack of caring, I would like to make comment about the players themselves. A few years ago my daughter was hit with a puck. She was seen by the team doctor in the locker room and taken by ambulence to Hasbro. A few stitches later she was fine. The next night, a representative of the team came up and asked that we bring her down after the game. Devin Rask and Jason Platt gave her an autographed stick and talked to her for ten minutes. She is a fan of these 2 gentlemen to this day. She is also a fan of the school for the treatment the team gave her.

Recently, my son and another daughter met Justin Gates. He spent time talking with them he showed them around the arena and took a half hour of his day. He now has 2 fans for life (3 counting me). They were jumping up and down when he played the final 2 periods Friday.

It amazes me that the fine young men on the team understand that making people happy can go a along way. The people that are in charge should look no further then the players to see how things should be done as far as customer service.

Did you know Jason was at a game recently (Maine I believe) and now lives just over the border in Mass.

Friday in warm up about three kids got the player's attention and Aaron Jamnick, Matt Bergland and one other player who I can't remember now each flipped them a warm up puck. I going to say I think they get it for a couple of reasons. One they really are closer in age to the kids then to most of the fans who watch, many I'm sure have done clinics with kids and most likely its easy for them to think back to when someone did that for them. The other is kids like Jamnick for instance come from small town where the high school team is a big deal in the town. Others like you mentioned Platt and Rask played in junior leagues that do draw well and are very much part of the community and are smartly run.

The people that are in charge should look no further then the players to see how things should be done as far as customer service.

From what I have heard a good number of the people doing any of the work are grad students which suggests they aren't enpowered to do much more then what they are specifically tasked to do. Like we have noted before not exactly encouraged to think outside the box or given any incentive to really do so.

CAV I disagree with you here. I was trained, in several different jobs, how to treat customers. You stated that the players get it, but the grad students don't? That doesn't make sense to me grad students are the same age as many of the players.

I do agree that they have no real power to do anything. But whats wrong with saying, "I understand your concern but please understand its not something I can do." Them cheerfully tell me who to talk to. I have no problem with voicing my concern, but being blown off ticks people off. Thats my 2 cents

Re: Providence - 2009-10 What is in the glass?

I think you are right -- Army came in and his team played very well until the last month of that first season. Then he benched Devin Rask and the team...I don't want to say quit...but they started playing passionless, emotionless hockey. To an observer like me, it looked very much like Army "lost" the team. They went into a freefall that culminated in that awful OT loss to Merrimack at home (remember that one?) where the Mack scored twice in the last 2 minutes to tie it and then won it in OT. And that was a game where PC was playing for home ice.

I agree with everyone else you say, except I'm pretty sure Devin Rask graduated a few years before Army arrived. I think Torry Gajda is the player in question. Frustrating to see that Army hasn't worked out as I was one of the Kool-Aid "Tim's Army" drinkers upon arrival during my senior year.

Finally got to a game last night and won chuck-a-puck (the prize was not Harry Potter exhibit tickets as they announced, but rather a hat and a 2X "Get Friared Up at the Dunk" basketball shirt).

I see the comment about the sound level on the music and while I don't like it too loud, you literally couldn't hear it last night. One wonders why bother playing if it's going to be that low.

As far as the game, what a terrible second period...shocking that no goal was scored by UVM in those last 5 minutes. However, the 5-minute penalty kill seemed to give them jump as they pinned the Cats for a good chunk of time. Neither team seemed to have snipers to bury the puck after good hard cycling, hence a 1-1 tie in a fairly hardfought game. I'm glad I went last night and not on Friday!
