Preliminary & Ongoing Pairwise Watch and 2013 NCAA Tournament Musing Thread

One thing that would have been nice if Northeastern had been the 8th team into the field is there would have been a story angle for the Boston media: Huskies make NCAA tournament debut against undefeated team. It's not like there is going to be much interest anywhere, but to get a little buzz going in a big market would be nice, and this year presented an opportunity that won't exist often. Versus North Dakota, that angle doesn't play at all, because Grand Forks has heard enough about the Gophs.
I think more credence should be given to victories in the latter half of the season. There is absolutely no incentive for a coach of a higher ranked team to juggle up lines or play that 3rd or 4th line in close games for development purposes early in the season as that will bite them in the butt later on . I think you are only as good as your last game. So BC didn't make the final of their own league they shouldn't be at ncaa.

Teams under consideration ranked by winning percentage including only games in which Minnesota was not a participant:
Dropping the Minnesota games from the RPI might be more interesting.

A loss to Minnesota is worth .48 in the RPI (.30*Zero + .24*100% + .46*52%). So to drop the Minnesota games you remove a bunch of .48 results for the current average RPI. Doing this bumps UND well past Mercyhurst up to the level of Clarkson and Wisconsin up to the level of Mercyhurst . Of course this exercise is a bit silly and unfair since other teams have tough games counted still.

The exercise I suggest still doesn't boost the RPIs of UND & Wisco as much as I'd have thought. I think they're better performance in other rankings systems is much more about OSU & UMD & themselves being collectively underrated rather than simply the marginal effect of the games against Minnesota.

I'm not even sure where to begin with this...
Well actually, me neither.

I'm not trying to make an argument. I had some time, I did the math, I thought it was interesting, I am just providing information.

I don't think it MEANS anything.

Sure there is. What you say was true for the 4-team tournament. You have some margin for error now when you're BU or BC and are pretty sure you'll be comfortably in the 8-team tournament.

I think you are only as good as your last game. So BC didn't make the final of their own league they shouldn't be at ncaa.
They were 4-0 against the ECAC semifinal teams, while posting a respectable .500 against Northeastern & BU. That's in a nutshell why BC is not only in the tournament but also hosting.

Hahahaha, yeah right. 1) Grapefruit league is in season 2) Bruins and Celtics are playing. 3) NFL draft is six weeks away 4) March madness 5) Men's college hockey heading into playoffs 6) High school winter sports season is in late stages of playoffs

Well, buzz is a relative term. Maybe one Boston Globe feature and one local news segment would be nice, though I agree you wouldn't have gotten that. A team making an NCAA debut likely to get destroyed in Minnesota isn't the best news story. When it comes to lesser-known sports, I think you need a national championship contender to get any attention.

I do vaguely remember Boston Globe coverage of the 1999 Harvard team, and seeing women's hockey standings on the scoreboard page years before. I also remember my local paper doing a feature on Heather Linstad when she coached Northeastern to the 1997 ECAC title. All that probably played some role in me paying more attention to the sport once I was in college.

They charge me the same for the ticket to the early season games. There's value in being able to win while making your early season adjustments. Don't mail in half of your season.

LOL I can't figure it out, that's either the funniest or stupitest post EVER.

But you're the UCONN fan. Really i didn't folllow all the games. If BC is 4 and 0 vs Ecac then maybe Clarkson should be out. Really what's the point of a having any playoffs. Lets see Uconn womens bball is usually near the top ranked but no matter what happens in the playoffs lets make sure they are in that elite 8 afterall they have had such a great season.

If you aren't motivated to win your conference tournament for its own sake, maybe you should just decline the invitation to play in it.

I am responding knowing full well you're just trolling, but I'll humor you: who from 9th on down deserves to be in the tournament over BC or Clarkson?

All four conference champions made the field. So what's the rule? Only teams that win their semifinal are eligible?

That gives us 8 teams right there. Why bother having a regular season?

Ugh I don't even know why I'm responding, you are clearly just trolling...

Yeah, but that was before the days of the demise of the newspaper as we once knew it.
