When I said what I thought the average conservative was voting for I wasn't claiming that the political party was actually working towards accomplishing that. I think to a large degree it's true on the other side as well. There's certainly an element that is anti-abortion, anti-gay, whatever but I think there are a lot less than you realize.

I think you, and plenty of others, are in denial about the true meaning of what is a conservative in America today and who's running the Republican Party.

I literally said the exact same thing in my post. Read it again. I'm sure you'll disagree with me but I think a similar thing can be said about the Democratic Party as well.

Macy's announced late last week that it's closing its regional flagship store in downtown Minneapolis. Just saying.

No, it's pretty easy to tell. The conservatives that run the Republican Party care more about guns, gays, unborn babies, and "Muslims = terrorists!" because that's what they campaign on. And since they're winning they get the "conservative" title, despite what many of you righties around here think.

And the Democratic Party is run by Third Way neoliberals who will probably get ousted out of power in the next two years in favor of Democratic-Socialists.

You could see the scales begin to fall from their eyes when Trump won the nomination. Movement Conservatives at places like National Review realized that all the success they had all those years had nothing to do with political or economic ideology: it was all cultural and tribal. They were not happy. They should have asked Andrew Sullivan -- he figured it out about 2002.

The right in America at this moment is a very dangerous thing. The last fig leaves of ideas have been shed (gleefully) and there they stand in their alt-reich nakedness. They are an actual fascist party now, and although they are a minority there are far more of them right now than there were in Germany in 1933. Our democratic institutions are a lot stronger than the Weimar Republic's were, but we're also seeing the way fascism takes hold: nobody on the right admits even to themselves what they are, and our social control institutions -- the press and judiciary -- are paralyzed.

I love the propagandist terms people use to describe those people who have differing political views. People on this board like to say it's different here, but it's really not. The words may be tucked away into otherwise more florid phrasing, but it's all the same as other social media.

So if they aren't voting for them because of what they're running on, why are people campaigning on those issues? Politicians may be professional liars, but they are generally interested in encouraging people to vote for them, and their statements, even if untrue, are meant to encourage votes.

What is the point of those particular statements if that's not why people vote for them?

Which says a lot about where both parties stand. As unappealing as both candidates were at least with Trump I could hang my hat on him most likely not passing any ridiculous gun laws.

The original post dealt with abortion, birth control, and homosexuality which I contend the average conservative doesn't care that much about. Again, there is unquestionably a segment that does, but I don't think it is as large as some would like to believe.

Is Coke? Yes. They're telling me to drink something else that better fits with what I'm willing to spend. I control that. The difference? Government tells me what I must pay them (fees, taxes) ... or else. Coke can't throw me in jail or seize property for not buying a Coke.
