How far will democratization negatively affect quality of art? Is this going to be a bad result of too many idiots with free time, when there's virtually no price to pay for some wannabe to produce something of their own? Who gets to say what is worthwhile for the rest of us to invest in? I don't want access to so many books. I want the people who are putting their heart and soul into it to write the books. And paint. And compose. And sell fishing lures. and design seat cushions. and bike paths. and gardens. Is everything going to be diluted when it's easier to accomplish?

The percentage of garbage will go up and all those elitist gatekeepers will become important again.

Anybody can show up at open mic night at Yuk Yuks, but Louis C. K. is the guy with his own TV show.

It's (sadly) no different than what we see now with news. In the old days, some producer somewhere got the raw feed of stories from all around the world and he'd decide what was worthwhile, what wasn't, and what was BS, then package it up for everyone to see at 6pm. That's certainly more efficient, but there are some major, glaring blind spots with that.

Now, news has become democratized to the point where everyone gets the raw feed and it's up to the consumer to decide what is important, what isn't, and what is total BS. The information we have available to us today is exponentially better than anything we've ever had in history, but it's also harder to find. Some people have adapted to this faster than others, to put it kindly.

Same goes for art. There's a lot of great stuff out there, exponentially more than ever before, but you have to find your own system to filter through everything else to find it.

Also: people always think they have it worse than they really do. The opposition media runs non-stop gloom and doom stories and nobody ever got re-elected telling people to put their big girl panties on.

Now mix in that Trump actually is incompetent and the GOP actually has no workable solutions to any problems, and yeah, it's not going to go well for them (particularly because the former has already shown he'll throw the latter under the bus if he ever feels any heat).

Yeah, but by then we won't have Obamacare or Medicare, and will probably be involved in global trade wars. So yeah, good times.

Back when I actually considered being a print journalist (35 years ago, for about 5 minutes) I got to watch some long, long time editors (50 years) talk through their process for how they culled material, shaped stories, and double (triple, quadruple) checked for everything from facts to grammar. It was like watching sculptors.

I think I can safely say there is not one person doing that level of "truth incubation" left on the planet. Even on excellent sites like Snopes there is still a taste of the firehose that comes with living or dying by clicks.

The irony was these guys (all guys, it was the 80s) were the opposite of starry-eyed idealists. They had pride in their work, yes, but they were hard-headed business people. They looked on untruths not as sin but as lethal to their business model, which was trustworthiness.

They also taught me a lot of really interesting profanity.

We deify the good ole days, but like I said, it's still not a great system. I'm pretty sure police didn't become evil as soon as we tore some of those walls down. In fact, I'm willing bet they were even worse prior. There wasn't a lot of space for those stories in the newspapers of those guys though.
