POTUS 46.10: A New Hope

I'm well aware of all of this stuff that is happening. But again, y'all seem to forget that many, MANY people aren't actively engaged in intellectual discussions on these matters on a daily/weekly basis. And there are many places that simply want to provide a "simple" answer for these people. That is what we (educated, well read, people) are up against. We still can't figure out how to send a "simple" answer to these folks.

That is what I'm getting at. Sure, we can post individual stats that show net gains between 2020 and now. But that doesn't overcome what everyday people see & feel on a daily basis.

And look, most of the people here have dual incomes, a home, multiple vehicles, etc. Y'all aren't millionaires, but if you need to do a $1500 emergency repair on your car or have an injury, you don't need to do a deep dive into your financial books to figure out the best way to pay that off. That's the main point here. The optics are definitely different based on your perspective here.

I think all of us here understand that no matter now "good" things may be going there are always going to be people who fall behind and struggle mightily from a financial standpoint. But so much of what people believe even about their own finances is colored by misconception, misperception, and just downright being wrong on the facts.

The price of gas is a good one to look at. If the price of a gallon goes up $0.50 people shriek and cry and claim the world is ending. But for the average car most people drive and the number of miles driven each month, a $0.50 bump amounts to perhaps an additional $20 spent on fuel per month. But to hear many people talk, a $0.50 bump will lead to evictions, an inability to buy food, and homelessness sometimes in the next 60 days.

Not to mention, the people who often complain the loudest and the longest about the economy then go out and vote against their own economic interests because of the gays, the guns, or the gods. The truth is, if people voted in their economic interests all of the time based on the policies of the people they can choose to vote for, they'd vote for republicans about 5% of the time. Last time I checked, voting was more or less a 50-50 proposition in this country over a very long period.

Cafe: Prices are grossly inflated due to corporate greed. Cost of goods aren’t rising nearly as fast as prices.

Me: Seems like a prime opportunity for someone to jump in, undercut the competition, but still make money.

Cafe: Are you crazy?! Do you have any idea how expensive it is to make goods?!

Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t get in your retort how this justifies the 300x wage gap in the US, especially compared to the 80x in the EU. Where they have capitol to build stuff AND sell them at a profit AND pay the workers money to survive on.

maybe there is your answer-the EU. They sell stuff at a profit and still keep the pay gap high but not obnoxious. And they have some very strong unions with real labor protection. Somehow, they still exist as part of the global market. Selling stuff imported to the us.

Strong social safety net too.

Did I grow up watching a different "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" than Chuckles? Because my memory of Make Believe Land and where ever it is Chuck is posting from are two *completely* different places.

Well I broke down and added chuck to the block list. I like a good, spirited argument, but he just brings absolutely nothing of value to the table. Links to the Babylon Bee and unfunny, ham-fisted cartoons are not debate.

Bull$h!t. It's funny how some of you think this echo chamber filled with rampant gaslighting is somehow "debate". LOL.

The right wing media bubble has created an entire alternate reality, complete with its own coded language and "alternate facts".

I miss the days when the different sides of the political spectrum could have real conversations. It was more a matter of tools and methods of getting things done instead of what we have now, people tethered mostly to reality versus people who are so far away from reality they can't even see what's real any longer.

It used to be like baseball. What was the best way to win, pitching, defense and three-run homers, or bunting, slashing, hit and runs, and stealing bases? Both kinds of teams won, it was as much a matter of what you preferred to watch.

Nowadays the right are like a team full of bashers who hit solo home runs. Sure they hit 2 or 3 every single game, but they lose 4-2 or 4-3, all the while pointing out the home plate umpire squeezed their hitters while your side had a strike zone as big as the grand canyon. This despite the fact the strike zone rectangle was there for everyone to see and it appeared just as many of your pitches were called right and wrong as theirs. The right today will watch their pitcher bounce a curve ball 2 feet in front of the plate and then say its a strike because when it bounced over the plate it was belt high.

Maybe the Right shouldn't have started demonizing the Center as baby killers and the Left as satanists to lap up those sweet evangelical votes in the 1980s. That is what destroyed the ability to have an intelligent conversation on politics with an opponent. Since that quite deliberate decision by a bunch of cynical Righties, who would not enter a church even to get out of the rain, our politics has been policy on one side versus pinball-eyed zealots on the other.

Republican hits Democrat with a brick and then says "why can't we talk calmly anymore?"

When Lee Atwater et al. learned how to manipulate the base with fear, the playbook was set.
