Well he isnt totally wrong. There are trees like Eucalyptus Trees that when overheated by fires do explode because they have such high amounts of oil. I know I have heard about San Diego has had issues with that in the past. What that has to do with Northern California or Oregon I dunno but I would guess someone told him about that and he just conflated it to all fires.

I believe it also happens if there is moisture inside the tree that becomes steam and the tree explodes like a boiler.
 
Far be it from me to defend the President, but he's not wrong here and allegedly it's a real issue for smoke jumpers and for pilots of fire tanker planes.

Did exploding trees cause the forest fires? Well, probably not. If the area of the exploding tree isn't already fully engulfed, I guess it could spread the fire worse. But if pressure builds up such that a tree will go supernova, I can't imagine that the surrounding area isn't similarly aflame.

I really wish Dr./Fire Marshal/Expert on Everything Trump would shut the hell up on details like this.

You ever smell a Eucalyptus? That can't be "oil." Palo Alto smells like weaponized aerosol cat p-ss.
 
Exploding trees don't cause fires, but it doesn't surprise me that they could explode when exposed to the extreme heat of a forest fire burning around them - just a more extreme version of the logs crackling in your fireplace. Lightning hit a tree in the woods on the property where I grew up, and it completely skinned the entire trunk of the tree - blew all of the bark off from the ground up to about 30' in the air, leaving the naked, white wood underneath.

I mean, he has a point though. Fires can't start once it gets cold in the winter. That's why no one ever has fires going then. And it's not like CA's normal fire season is October/November or anything.
