Re: POTUS 45.61: All Are Welcome to Watch This Circus
I recall the debate of the time. Plenty of us -- even many Republicans - understood the magnitude and said so, vocally. You don't betray the principles of the country without somebody get their panties in a twist about it; that's the pesky thing about representative democracy.
But it underlines how vital getting these things right, is. Even the 1980 tragedy, which was still far less significant than the 1800 or 1860 (or 1932) triumphs, has been a nightmare for this country for a half century and has led directly to this moment of crisis. I'm sure there were chances in the 30-year lead up to the Civil War to mitigate the damage but the country was too distracted or lazy. The same has been true beginning with Reagan and now here we are. You cannot appease terrorists. Munich begets all that comes after.
There seems to be a very rough timetable of 50 year increments:
1800 + 60 years
1860 + 72
1932 + 48
1980 + 40
2020
If we get this right and then truly uproot and burn out the filth then maybe we'll be safe again until 2070 or so. I'd like that. My entire adult life has been lived during a period of American decline. I'd like to see us become a nation to be proud of again.
I wouldn't put 1980 in there. Sure, in hindsight, but at the time, I don't think anyone could have imagined the magnitude of the consequences that election would have.
