Air B&Bs are killing my small town. Between people purchasing 2-3 homes to run as seasonal rentals (and having a ton of seasonal rentals on a block really ****s with the character of a neighborhood), and large hotels purchasing whole apartment buildings to house H2-B workers in the summer, there is a huge shortage of year-round rentals and the added demand for single family homes to turn into Air B&Bs has driving the housing prices above what many year-round residents can afford.

i'm actually okay with changing zoning in areas to increase density IF those places have restrictive covenants placed on them that prohibit short term rentals.

Well, we know they dont have any plan to actually write a "better" health care plan, because they have had *checks calendar* two years of solid R sweep of power, two additional years of Congressional control before, and four years of house control before that.

In eight years, the house sat around picking at ways to blow up the ACA, and failed, including a two year period where anything remotely R related was fast tracked and rubber stamped. Yet they didn't do a thing.

They're not going to "make a better health care system," they're just going to take it away and laugh all the way to the bank.

Yep. And it's a real uphill battle to change. Reading through Backdoor and hearing other neighborhood chatter you are confronted with lots of people up in arms about their neighborhoods being rezoned for duplexes and triplexes.
Because...you know...the poors.

Near by city if Tacoma has taken a somewhat more aggressive approach to curb the bleed-over from Seattle into their housing that they have been experiencing the last few years. Rezoned a lot of space, dropped parking requirements, etc. But that is also being met with opposition by current home owners.

They had their "better" health care plan all ready to go, and John McCain voted 'no'. Because it wasn't better, would insure fewer people, and cost more money.


Thus earning the spite of Red Don for all eternity.

Tacoma is one of the places where when the Poors move in property values go up.

Just watched kind of a sad PBS video covering the "red paradox" in Louisiana. Second poorest state in the union, almost all of the state budget comes from the US government. There's rampant pollution all over the place.

Yet they blame the US government for many things. Some even challenge that the pollution is causing problems. They just want the jobs.

Nobody has noticed that the petroleum industry is one of the most profitable ones in the world. They've got enough money to pay billions of dollars in fines if they make a mistake. And these same company jobs are so bad that Louisiana is one of the poorest states in the country. Nobody minds that the pollution has killed many plants and animals around- and that cancer is all around the country ("there have been studies" one said). They think liberals need to back off... They will get healthcare if they really want it, don't force them- ignoring the tiny fact that most of them qualify for benefits under the ACA.

It's hard to feel sorry for people who just seem to want to be abused by corporations.

Then I started a small movie about "the death of Seattle" which starts out blaming the city government for not allowing police to clean up homeless areas. I browsed through the comments and saw much blame on democrats and socialists and the anti-fata. I could not watch it anymore. Nobody seems to consider what to do with all of these homeless people when you round them up. Even worse, nobody has even considered the cause of the massive homeless in Seattle- which is a problem in many areas where large and profitable corporations move in, hugely increase the housing costs, forcing people out on the streets. Quick to want to enforce laws, but not ever looking deeper into the problem. We see the exact same thing going on at the border, BTW, where thousands of people come to the US, and just turn themselves in. Everyone just wants to lock them up, take their kids, and send them back- not once ever asking why people knowingly come here in the first place. Or how we react to terrorists- we want to kill them all, not thinking that doing that will likely generate more hate as opposed to actually understanding why people don't like the West so much.

This country has some real challenges when it comes to where we are going.

The Democrats have an almost impossible task in convincing these people to sit back and think.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), whose panel has jurisdiction over health care, said he received no heads up from Trump or the White House that the president would call Tuesday for the GOP to become “the party of health care.”

“I don’t think there was any heads up on anything that he was going to say,” said Grassley, who added that he didn’t even know Trump was meeting with the GOP conference on Tuesday until Monday night.

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), the chairman of another key panel that handles health care, said he didn’t know about Trump’s new health care push until the president tweeted about it at 11:58 a.m. Tuesday, shortly before he walked into a Republican conference lunch to announce it in person.
