this may need to approach that snl skit when dan qualye (was it michael j fox?) kept standing up and he had to be told to sit with a wave of the hand :)

The United States is dead. This speech is the eulogy.

The anti immigrant rhetoric is off the charts.

I'm glad I just got off a 9 hour flight with no internet. Waiting for my island hopper flight and the only tv in the little bar here has espn on. It's like the speech isn't happening if I don't look at any social media

I was at butcher and the boar stuffing face and drinking. Glad I missed it.

Dystopian is under stating it.

Meh. Maybe it played worse watching it, but reading the transcript, it reads like a standard address to Congress. I don't agree with more than a tiny fraction of what he argued for, but nothing strikes me as particularly out there as far as his rhetoric. Especially compared to everything else that's come out of his mouth. Or his acceptance speech at the convention.

It's laughable how badly conservatives want to rebuild America through manufacturing which is mostly automated now and can't possibly come close to replacing lost jobs instead of infrastructure (never ending need) and the fastest growing industry on the planet - renewable energy.

Re: POTUS 45.5 - Sweden is Under Attack

I did not see the address. I only saw brief commentary on my Twitter, on here, and some random news articles this morning.

One I was was NPR's discussion of Trump's "Buy American" stance. (http://www.npr.org/2017/02/27/51749...ign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=20170228)

The issue I have with this, and obviously I'm 390% behind any initiative that puts funding towards transportation infrastructure, is that for federal/state jobs (partial federal/state funding, full federal/state funding, handover to federal/state, etc) there already ARE some pretty hefty "Buy American" clauses in these contracts. Most contractors already source these American materials because they've done it for so long that they know the process, and can get American produced products without hassle.

These contractors work on such tight profit margins that any overhead by the home office to try and source cheaper materials from elsewhere is a waste of time and money which negates the price difference.

This is the "answer in search of a problem" that hiring someone who has never done public works projects would create. How many of Trump's privately funded buildings within the US are made with Canadian, Mexican, or Chinese steel? How much of his building components are from those same three nations?

Another issue NPR raised was that there are exemptions possible under the current "Buy American" rules to allow for specialty items not produced in the US, foreign products available as such a discount that it would significantly change the cost to buy an American made identical item (significant change is generally +10% of the budgeted item cost per our state spec). Will these exemptions still be available?

Following the exemptions, NPR also mentioned there seemed to have been a vague statement that eluded to also forcing companies to use US built construction equipment. Favoring Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, Ingersoll Rand, and other US made equipment over foreign made equipment. Which, again, most everyone involved in civil construction already uses due to the ease of repair.

It's frustrating that such a hypocrite who utilized foreign made products to build his empire is forcing an industry he knows nothing about, who already does the things he's going to require, to do something he never has.

But "Rah, Rah, USA," eh?

Re: POTUS 45.5 - Sweden is Under Attack

So I thought I'd dimensionalize the conservative bias in the US election process.

I think its pretty common knowledge that since 1988 (almost 30 years ago), there has been only one presidential election where the GOP has won the popular vote for president (2004). And there's a good chance that wouldn't have happened had Bush not won in 2000 on a minority.

Bias for conservatives in congress has in many ways been more stark. When looking at the Senate and the House, you need to look at 3 terms in order to get all Senate state elections considered. Over the last 3 elections, popular vote for Democrat Senate members and GOP Senate members has been almost a dead heat (GOP +3%). Yet the GOP has gained 18% more seats than Dems. Over the last 3 elections, popular vote for Democrat House members and GOP House members has also been almost a dead heat (GOP +3% also). Yet the GOP has gained 24% more seats than Dems.

We are a country of rule neither by the people nor for the people.
