Most people who go into plumbing, HVAC, etc., don't have an interest in studying those things. To thrust the subjects upon them won't do much good other than to draw their ire at wasting their education dollars.

Pearls before swine. Split the university system the way the Europeans do it, let the MBAs study their garbage without distraction from the finer things, and vice versa. Above all, raise community colleges to the same level of status as universities, and make them free.

It might actually be okay to limit arts education to the rich who can pay for it. Those are likely also the children who have been raised with an appreciation of it. Art is by its nature an aristocracy. Anyway, the ones who will really shake things up and create The Shock of the New never come from inside the walls, anyway. They are the sappers who undermine the walls and blow sh-t up. Intense poverty sharpens their edge.

Make trade schools and community college absolutely free, transfer 80% of the current university curriculum to them, close 95% of the current universities, and make the rest pure Ivory Tower arts and science with $1M/semester tuition and fees. Give heiresses something worthwhile to do.

Beats what we've got now.

For every high school kid who gets Shakespeare there are thousands of future laborers and salesmen who just waste the class's time -- and that includes half the kids who get A's.

Endow a Kingsmen secret society that picks out 1 poor HS senior from every 1000 and says, "Here is your acceptance letter from Harvard. We have prepaid plus a stipend afterwards every year for life. Go forth, learn, create."

The other 999 will do just fine in their cubes.

The GOP tax ‘reform’ is a tax scam

This tax plan now clearly reveals itself to be an instrument that helps mitigate the protections Republicans slather on the 1 percent by transferring their tax burden to us, the average folk.

I hope that, as April 15 looms large, lawful, taxpaying Americans will figure out they’ve been lied to — again — and share their rage with their representatives. It’s time to replace this GOP tax scam with a tax code that works for the rest of us.

I'm all for those people getting a free ride from private sponsors. The world needs ditch diggers, too, sure, but without poets and artists really who gives a crap? But the art that is sponsored by the non-aristocratic state is both compromised and compost, so bring back patronage. The very rich are too stupid to care either way as long as it memorializes them.

That seems fine to me.
