It's a classic righty trope that the New Deal extended the Great Depression. In actuality FDR pulled back from New Deal policies (because of pressure from those who were uncomfortable with democratic socialist policies) and that extended the depression -- exactly the opposite of what the Plutes want you to think. The Kochs et al have been beavering away for decades brainwashing their minions in this kind of alternative history. It's what they do. The fact is the redistribution of the New Deal mitigated the Great Depression and created the American middle class, while the war against those policies conducted by the Plutes and their useful idiots ever since destroyed the middle class and the American economy. Unrestricted capitalism is an inefficient economic system for the same reason that a car without brakes doesn't go for very long.

Thank God he got us into WWII, so all that sweet government spending provided the juice the economy needed to kick the GD once and for all.

As sad as it sounds, the war was a great leveler in the economy.

First, everyone was tightening their consumption up a lot. Second, if you made a lot of money during the war, you were VERY much looked down on. And third, making as many arms as possible was the goal- so the working class made out the best during WWII economically. So much so that the GI Bill was easy to fund post war. Then when you add in the austerity of the rich extended for a few decades beyond that- we got the economic powerhouse that was the US.

And the super rich have been fighting to get back to pre-depression economy since then. And it's largely been effective.

Few remember that President Obama did point out that spending cut Roosevelt did when approaching the 2008 recession, it seems. His spending got us out of that quickly, and we were building the economy back to some great standing. Until dumpy got power and gave the super rich more unneeded money, which took a lot of backing away from the poor AND put us farther into debt (which actually favors the rich even more, since they get the interest).

We've been down this path before, and while D's also spend money, they also put the country on a glide path to no deficit and lower debt. Clinton had that path, Obama started with a mess, but we were clearly on that path. Reagan didn't do that, Bush 1 tried to stay on the Reagan path, but was forced to raise taxes.... Bush 2 started in a good place, and tanked it thanks to his tax cuts, and dump just put the country into a tailspin.

So IF that really matters, the vote on it. If you keep believing R's when they claim to be fiscally conservative, well, that's your fault, since there's zero evidence that they are.

If this really matters, then you need to stop sitting out of elections, and vote for the people who are far more responsible with your money. Based on the last 40 years of running the country, that would be Democrat.

If you borrow to give trillions for the rich to hide in off shore accounts or use to acquire even a greater hold over institutions and resources that's bad because you wind up with a sicker country where the majority of people are locked into perpetual poverty unless they turn to crime as the sole rational choice.

The Democrats favor the former; it works; this country is great when we do that.

The Republicans favor the latter; it's a trainwreck; this country sucks when we do that.

We have now had back to back 40-year experiments of each method. It's settled science. Republican economics is the equivalent of creationism and climate denial.

States dumb enough to go for the Kansas Final Solution must already start out with terrible school systems, by definition. This is another reason why I favor the idea of letting the rock stupid red states go their own way on policy. As long as we end all interstate transfers so they don't cost the smart, productive blue states anything, let them fail. Pass a 10-year residency requirement in blue states before a person can collect public assistance to stop their caravans.

They want to live in a toilet, let them live in a toilet. They've announced their hatefulness -- they aren't our problem anymore. Let their disease and violence finish them off.
