THat's a different rule. That was passed under reconcilliation rules which the Dems agreed to at some point. It wasn't new legislation.

Here:

The tax reform bill they are pushing through the Senate will live and die by a complicated rule — known as the “Byrd Rule,” a condition of the “budget reconciliation” process that allows Republicans to pass legislation with only 51 votes in the Senate. Because of how they set it up, Republicans’ tax bill can only increase the deficit by $1.5 trillion in the first 10 years, with no increase outside that window.

Just hours after the White House banned a CNN reporter from attending a press event with President Donald Trump, adviser Kellyanne Conway on Thursday berated the news media, claiming that "shouting" and "pouting" reporters should show more "civility" and "respect" toward the administration.
When asked Thursday why Kaitlan Collins had been booted from a Rose Garden event a day earlier after she peppered the president with questions on Russia and Michael Cohen, Conway, counselor to Trump, responded that unruly reporters were to blame for the incident.

It's political tug-o-war, only the GOP never stopped pulling after dragging the Dems well across the line.

And the centrists point to the flag on the middle of the rope complaining that Dems hands aren't close enough to the flag for their liking.

I think its more that the GOP decided to vote in every election, whereas the Dems did not. Its a good point that people have brought up. As the country has moved left (gay rights, tax hikes on the rich, environment, Medicare/Medicaid expansion, etc) the gubmint has moved right. That's because the right votes.

I saw this happen in Boston over the past 30 years. Long, long after they should have given up the ghost, older white conservatives (the Good Will Hunting crowd) held most of the levers of power in the city. This was due to two reasons - 1) the less of them they were, the more homogenous they became so it was easy to appeal to them, and 2) they were by far the most reliable voters as city elections take place in odd # years for whatever reason. Eventually the dam broke and they went down hard, but the lesson learned from progressive activists was if you don't show up on election day, little else matters.

Meanwhile those in the middle class like me will have yet another 10-20% increase for next year. Thanks, ****tard Trump.

Given the makeup of the City Council, weren't (aren't) most of those councilors dyed in the wool liberals?

If your trying to portray that bloc as GOP, it has (did) not reflect in the results.

The right votes but they also did a better job in 2016 of finding the people who typically don't vote and got them engaged as well. Steve Bannon for instance made it a priority to target the gamers who were angry about the whole gamergate controversy as they tend to have authoritarian leanings and a lot of them are anti-semitic (I definitely know this from experience). They also got the incels and various other alt-right internet dwellers that hate women. Those people almost certainly don't vote in normal elections but Bannon and the other strategists did a better job of having Trump pander to those voters and in such a close election where every vote mattered, getting people who don't normally turn out was huge.

Obviously we know that some voters probably flipped from D to R in certain districts (I highly doubt it was 6-9 million as was mentioned in another thread) because they were ****ed about the status quo and didn't want another establishment candidate but I do think that it's good evidence of why you want to try and get the vote of those who don't normally.
