It's hard to keep the bigger picture in mind on this greatness thing. America was great that day in sixth grade when I accidentally rubbed up against Debbie Schmitt in the band room when I was pulling my trombone out of the rack. That year, and three years on either side of it, was made glorious by that one incident, and I barely understood why. People in other places were suffering greatly that day in 1964, but who knew?
America was great when our cities looked like this, too.
